Abstract

This qualitative study explored how input-first preparation influences the public speaking confidence of EFL learners at the University of Insan Budi Utomo. Using a semi structured interview approach, data were gathered from learners who engaged in a preparation sequence emphasizing comprehension before production. Participants were first exposed to authentic speech models, such as TED Talks, and guided through analysis of rhetorical openings, delivery techniques, and language use, prior to producing their own speeches. Findings revealed that this method transformed learners’ perception of public speaking from a high anxiety performance to a skill that can be systematically learned. Students reported reduced anxiety, improved delivery, and greater use of natural intonation and varied sentence structures. The analysis indicated that having a clear opening strategy and exposure to authentic speech rhythms provided psychological readiness and linguistic resources during performance. Compared to traditional output-first methods, the input-first approach offered a lower pressure entry point into speaking tasks which later enables learners to internalize effective techniques before application. The study suggests that input-rich preparation can demystify public speaking, particularly for learners with high speaking anxiety, and positions comprehension as a critical foundation for confident oral communication in EFL contexts.

Abstract

The fast growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities for technology-enhanced language learning, especially in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for health science students. This study explores students’ perceptions of an AI-integrated interactive e-book developed for health science ESP courses. A mixed-method design was employed with 55 students from Nursing, Midwifery, and Pharmacy programs at Universitas Madani. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and reflective responses. The descriptive analysis showed an overall mean perception score of 76.51 (SE = 1.814; 95% CI = 72.87–80.15), with a median of 81.00, higher than the mean, suggesting above-average perceptions for most students. A standard deviation of 13.455 indicated considerable variation, with scores ranging from 39 to 90 (range = 51; IQR = 18). Item-level means ranged from 4.0 to 4.4, indicating positive responses in terms of accessibility, navigability, relevance of AI features, and motivational impact. Qualitative reflections revealed that students valued adaptive learning, real-time feedback, and improved confidence in medical English communication, while challenges included internet connectivity, chatbot limits, and initial adjustment. Overall, the AI-integrated e-book was perceived as useful, engaging, and relevant, though further improvements such as multimedia and simulations. This study concludes that AI-powered e-books have strong potential to advance ESP instruction in healthcare education.

Abstract

This research aimed to enhance students' morphology by using painting with Letters strategy for the secondary level. A literature review has been done in this study; the present study employed George's (2008) model of library research. As the main argument, the present study adopted the concept of differentiated instruction from Tomlinson (1999, 2001, 2014), Tomlinson and Imbeau (2010), and Tomlinson and Moon (2013) to answer the present study's research questions, supported by other relevant sources. The data were collected from the students of secondary level related to the study. The results showed that the characteristics of students' paintings can stimulate the enhancing of students' morphology and have a profound impact on art. The development of their vocabularies has important implications for the secondary level and certainly for secondary learners who are on the budding edge of propelling themselves from the task of learning to read into the realm of reading to learn. The student's paintings at the secondary level can increase and also improve the creativity of their learning process in morphology.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study addresses a crucial issue in 21st-century education the need to integrate Compassion, Communication, Teamwork, Empathy, and social sensitivity (CCTES) into English language learning to cultivate intercultural competence and social-emotional awareness. The research aims to examine: (1) how the Intercultural Ukhuwah-Based English Instruction (IU-ELT) model fosters students’ compassion, (2) to what extent IU-ELT affects students’ communication skills in intercultural interactions, and (3) how this model enhances students’ ability to work collaboratively. Using a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, data were collected from 23 vocational high school students through questionnaires and performance tests, analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and effect size (Cohen’s d). The findings reveal significant improvement across all variables with large effect sizes, showing IU-ELT effectively strengthens empathy, intercultural communication, and teamwork through values of ta’aruf, tafahum, ta’awun, and takaful. The study concludes that IU-ELT contributes theoretically by bridging intercultural pedagogy with spiritual-based social learning and practically by fostering character, empathy, and collaboration in English classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the types and functions of code-switching used by characters in the Indonesian drama series Layangan Putus and investigates its potential as a resource for technology-enhanced English language education. Using a qualitative descriptive method, selected dialogues from the series were analyzed based on sociolinguistic frameworks to identify patterns of code-switching. The findings indicate that code-switching in the film serves expressive, referential, and interactional purposes, reflecting authentic bilingual communication in contemporary Indonesian society. Beyond its linguistic implications, this study emphasizes the pedagogical value of integrating film-based content into digital learning environments. Incorporating such media in English language classrooms can enhance students’ sociolinguistic awareness, cultural understanding, and communicative competence. The research contributes to both linguistic studies and the development of innovative, media-based approaches to English language teaching in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpersonal meaning in Taylor Swift's song lyrics in the Lover album, focusing on the mood system from Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory and Gary Chapman's love language theory. A qualitative approach was used in this study, with discourse analysis of the song lyrics. Data collection techniques were conducted through documentation and literature study methods, in which the writer analyzed five selected song lyrics from Taylor Swift's Lover album. The data analysis technique used is the data analysis model of Miles and Huberman which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the analysis show that declarative clauses dominate the song lyrics, which are used to convey personal feelings and experiences clearly and directly, thus strengthening the emotional message in the song. In the analysis of love language, Quality Time is the most dominant type of love language, followed by Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, and Receiving Gifts. The conclusion of this study shows that the combination of mood system and different types of love language in Taylor Swift's song lyrics creates complex and deep interpersonal meanings. The dominant declarative clauses clarify the expression of love and strengthen the emotional connection in the song, building a strong connection with the listener. These results show how Taylor Swift uses song lyrics to express feelings and build meaningful interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

Language efficiency is key to clarity, especially in the context of social media platforms like Instagram. Other elements in captions from the official company accounts, (such as @hariankompas and @gojekindonesia, @goodlifebca and @traveloka. id, @pertamina) and personal accounts (such as @deddycorbuzier, @emildardak,@astridwidayani, @marissahaque, @radityadika). Differences in communicative patterns are to be investigated here by examining grammatical cohesion systems: reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. The research enhances our understanding on the distinction between formal (business) and informal (personal) language strategies and their implications for readability and audience reception. The aims of the study are: (1) to find out which grammatical coherence types are more frequently employed in the corporate and personal Instagram captions; (2) to establish if there are differences between these two account types, concerning their use of grammatical coherence. The study employs qualitative method with the use of discourse analysis. Captions from five official company and five personal accounts are utilized in collecting the data. Halliday and Hasan's (1976) model is then used to identify and classify grammatical cohesion items before similarities and differences are identified through a comparative descriptive analysis. It is anticipated that the findings will offer a thorough understanding of the language techniques that define both personal and professional Instagram communication.

Abstract

The students of Gen-Z have a preference to study with their gadgets then with their teachers; it raises some challenges for the teacher. Language teaching media is very helpful to give the solutions. This study explores the teachers’ preferences to use media in teaching the Gen-Z students at SMPN 1 Langga Payung, North Sumatera, Indonesia, in English language teaching. It is explored with a descriptive qualitative method; data were accumulated from English teachers and students through observations and interviews, and analyzed qualitatively with data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Two primary factors were found in this study: 1) the media used and 2) the challenges. The results show that teachers used audio media (songs, YouTube), visual media (textbooks, PowerPoint), and audio-visual media (videos, Word wall) to make it suitable to the Gen Z learning styles; and the students showed interest and highly motivated. However, the challenges came, such as poor internet access, limited digital skills, and students’ distractions. The study concludes that teachers should use appropriate media to support effective and interactive English teaching and learning for Gen Z students. The media used in English language teaching can be more variative and selective; and it needs further study to explore more, especially the digital media or tools that can be used appropriately to the students in rural areas of study.
