The sample for this research was class XI students at SMA Negeri 2 Medan, consisting of 30 students. The instruments used are written tests and observations. The research results show that students' critical thinking skills in history learning tend to be low. Factors that influence students' critical thinking skills include a lack of mastery of historical concepts, a lack of practice in analyzing and evaluating historical information, and a lack of motivation in learning history. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers use a diagnostic approach to help improve students' critical thinking skills in history learning by identifying students' difficulties and weaknesses and providing guidance and learning that suits students' individual needs.

Abstract

This research discusses one of President Soeharto's educational policies in the field of education, namely the compulsory education program. This compulsory education program ultimately sparked Suharto's idea of building elementary schools and repairing damaged school buildings which were then called Presidential Instruction Elementary Schools (SD Inpres). The aim of this research is to examine what problems occur in the Compulsory Education policy and the construction of SD Inpres. The method used in this research is the historical method which includes heuristics, verification, interpretation and historiography. The research results show that the compulsory education program in the era of President Soeharto has not fully achieved the expected goals. This is because many people are not aware of the importance of education, there is misappropriation of funds by certain parties, the educational gap that occurs in society is still very visible, and the development carried out is only aimed at political interests. The construction of SD Inpres only prioritizes quantity without paying attention to quality developments. At this time, the most important thing is to create as many educated graduates as possible without looking at the quality of teaching and educational outcomes

Abstract

Character education in the world of education in the era of industry 4.0 and technological advances does not seem to be well balanced with the character education process at school. Guardians seem indifferent to their children's learning activities and tend to give children the freedom to explore the world of information without strict supervision from guardians. Character education in pesantren is one option to educate and instill the character of students. This can be implemented because the character education process in pesantren is managed by the pesantren dormitory education system. Researchers used observation and interview methods with pesantren managers, student guardians and students. After collecting data, researchers found that character education can only be carried out if students are in a pesantren education environment. The pattern of pesantren education is to build the character of students to become moral, ethical, polite, trustworthy, honest humans, have general and special skills, be able to communicate well, maintain religious norms in life. Character education will be realized if students have knowledge and are educated in the pesantren education system that conducts 24-hour supervision every day.
