Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of expressive illocutionary speech acts in the YouTube program Catatan Demokrasi TV One, episode "Pagar Laut." The research identifies the use of expressive illocutionary acts in a public discussion forum broadcast through digital media, employing a qualitative descriptive approach. The data source consists of utterances containing expressive illocutionary acts in the episode. Data were collected using the observation method, including techniques such as recording (sadap), non-participatory observation (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap/SBLC), and note-taking to obtain relevant transcripts. Data analysis was conducted using the pragmatic equivalence method, with the Determining Element Sorting technique (PUP) and the Equalizing Comparative Connection technique (HBS) to classify data based on indicators of expressive speech acts and align the findings with Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary acts. The findings revealed that the three most dominant types of expressive illocutionary acts were expressing gratitude (30%), greeting (25%), and apologizing (15%). Meanwhile, the least common type found was expressing condolences (0%). These findings demonstrate that expressive illocutionary acts not only serve to express the speaker's psychological state but also play a role in maintaining politeness and fostering harmonious interaction in digital political discussions, thereby enhancing communication dynamics among participants in the forum.

Abstract

Writing skills are an essential aspect of Indonesian language learning for developing critical, reflective, and creative thinking skills. Given the low level of writing skills among Year 12 vocational school students in writing mini-autobiographies, this quantitative research (quasi-experiment) tested the effectiveness of the Experiential Learning model. The results of the study show that the implementation of learning activities reached an optimal level (educators 100%, students 99.1%). There was a significant increase in students' writing skills, from the ‘fair’ category to “good”, with student responses in the ‘very good’ category. These findings confirm that Experiential Learning is effective in improving students' reflective writing skills and active engagement, making it suitable for implementation as a contextual learning strategy.

Abstract

Learning models are crucial instruments in education as they directly impact student learning outcomes. Among various pedagogical innovations, Problem Based Learning (PBL) has emerged as a highly effective model for writing instruction. This study aims to comprehensively describe the application of the Problem Based Learning model in improving students' writing skills through a systematic literature review. The research method employed is Literature Review (LR). The data criteria include scientific articles from Sinta 1 to Sinta 6 accredited national journals published within the last ten years (2015–2025). In the initial search phase using specific keywords, 60,800 articles were identified. The selection process was then tightened through title validation and elimination based on topical relevance, leaving 15 articles. After a quality review conducted by reading the full texts to ensure alignment with the research focus, 10 final articles were selected as the primary data sources. The review results indicate that the Problem Based Learning model significantly enhances students' writing skills across various educational levels. The implementation of PBL successfully transforms previously passive students into active and collaborative participants in the creative process. Significant improvements were observed in writing various text types, including argumentative, explanatory, observation reports, descriptive, news, and negotiation texts. Consequently, this model is highly recommended for language instruction.

Abstract

Humor is an element that triggers laughter, evokes amusement, and aims to entertain. Humor can be divided into three categories: (1) personal humor, which relates to an individual's tendency to laugh at events they find funny; (2) social humor, which arises when joking with friends; and (3) humor in art, which involves various elements. This study aims to describe the use of language (language), logic (logic), form (identity), and action (action) humor in the film Agak Laen by Muhadkly Acho. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data collected consists of words and sentences containing humor elements, with the data source being the film Agak Laen (2024), with a duration of 1:58:48. Data collection techniques were conducted through documentation and note-taking. The data was analyzed using the Berger (2012) approach, which includes categories of language (language), logic (logic), form (identity), and action (action) humor. The results of the study show various categories of humor in the film, such as insults, irony, sarcasm, slapstick, and others, enriching the humor elements in the film.

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the form and function of hegemonic masculinity in intergender relationships so as to influence readers' understanding of the concept of masculinity. This research utilizes a qualitative approach to literary criticism of masculinity by Connell which was chosen because it is able to explain the power relations between men and between men and women. This study analyzes the dialogue and narrative in the Novel Ayah... Buya Hamka's story is through the technique of listening, purposive sampling, and the flow of Miles' analysis. The results of the study identified 35 findings divided into four categories: social constructs (25 findings) that show masculinity norms are shaped through cultural expectations; gender hierarchy (4 findings) that affirm the dominant position of men in intergender relations; the role of popular culture (1 finding) that reinforces masculine values from outside the text; and subordination (5 findings) that show the weakening of non-dominant forms of masculinity in order to maintain masculine hegemony. Overall, this study shows that the representation of masculinity in literature is intertwined with broader social and cultural structures. In addition, the recommendations of the study further explore the impact of hegemonic masculinity in other literary works and its influence on people's views on gender across cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the application of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the ‘Let's Practise’ exercises in the Cerdas Cergas Berbahasa dan Bersastra Indonesia (Smart and Agile in Indonesian Language and Literature) textbook for Year 12. The study focuses on three higher cognitive levels in Anderson's Taxonomy, namely C4 (analysis), C5 (evaluation), and C6 (creation). This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach by analysing 79 questions based on operational verbs and linguistic task contexts. The reliability of the classification is ensured through an inter-rater reliability procedure by two independent assessors. The results showed that all questions were within the HOTS domain, with the following distribution: C4 in 32 questions (40.5%), C5 in 28 questions (35.4%), and C6 in 19 questions (24.1%). This distribution indicates the dominance of analytical skills, followed by evaluative and creative skills. Conceptually, these results emphasise the importance of integrating evaluation (C5) and creation (C6) skills in Indonesian language learning to develop students' critical and expressive literacy competencies. Practically, these findings provide a basis for teachers, textbook authors, and curriculum developers to review and rewrite practice questions so that the proportion and depth of HOTS, particularly at the evaluation and creation levels, are more optimal in supporting the development of students' higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

The process of giving and receiving information will run smoothly if the individuals involved use a language they understand well. The Kampar dialect of Riau Malay, as the mother tongue, is a language closely associated with the lives of teachers and students in Kampar Regency, unlike Indonesian, which seems formal and is rarely used in everyday communication. This study aims to analyse symbolic interactionism in the use of the Kampar dialect of Riau Malay. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Kuok, with the research subjects consisting of 12 teachers and 15 students. The data obtained came from primary and secondary sources. The research data was collected using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The results of this study show that the use of the Kampar dialect of Riau Malay in teacher-student interactions is interpreted as a means of communication that creates a friendly, relaxed, and participatory learning atmosphere. This is in line with symbolic interactionism theory, which states that language is not only a tool for conveying messages, but also a social and cultural symbol that strengthens the identity and relationships between its speakers.

Abstract

This study examines gender inequality in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel Gadis Pantai (The Beach Girl) using a feminist approach, focusing on the portrayal of patriarchal domination and its impact on the female character, Gadis Pantai. The gap seen in related literature often overlooks the importance of studying gender inequality in Indonesian literature, especially in terms of the influence of social structures on women's lives. This study aims to identify and analyse the forms of gender inequality experienced by Gadis Pantai, including subordination, marginalisation, stereotyping, double burden, and violence. Using a qualitative approach and literary text analysis, this study finds that the gender inequality depicted in this novel is highly relevant to the issues of gender inequality that still exist in contemporary society. The main findings show that although Gadis Pantai struggles to gain autonomy and freedom, she remains trapped in a role determined by a patriarchal system that limits her potential. This study affirms that Gadis Pantai is not only a literary work that reflects social injustice in the past, but also serves as a relevant social critique for fighting for gender equality in modern society.

Abstract

This study analyzes the compliance with and violations of Grice’s cooperative principle in the Gaspol Kompas.com podcast episode on the Banten gubernatorial election and examines the potential use of these findings as instructional material for teaching debate in senior high schools. The study employs spontaneous political conversation as its data, which distinguishes it from previous research that commonly used scripted sources such as novels, dramas, films or nonpolitical podcasts. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, using observation and note taking techniques. The findings reveal various forms of compliance with and violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relatin and manner within political discourse. These findings hold potential as argumentative examples in debate learning, although the study does not develop or test any instructional materials directly. The novelty of this research lies in its analysis of spontaneous political conversations and their relevance to Indonesian language learning, an aspect that has not been highlighted in previous studies.
