Abstract

Humans are very closely related to culture, so that humans are called cultural beings. Culture itself consists of ideas, symbols, and values as a result of human actions. At this time, a complete ceremony with all its procedures is still used and preserved and becomes something sacred besides the marriage contract. However, it is rare for people to know the meaning and significance of the symbols of the series of wedding ceremonies. In fact, it is not uncommon to make the series of ceremonies a source of pride without knowing more about their meanings and without explaining their benefits. This study aims to determine the implementation (stages) and meaning contained in the symbols of traditional wedding ceremonies in Kampar Kiri Hulu District, Batu Sasak Village, Kampar Regency. The author conducted the research by conducting observations, interviews with traditional figures (ninik mamak), and literature studies. This research is descriptive-analytical with qualitative methods. The results of this study are that the traditional wedding ceremony in Batu Sasak Village consists of stages or processions of ulok-ulok, antagh tando, manunggu buek, manjolang sumondo, and manjolang mintuo. At these stages there are several symbols; these symbols are usually represented in the form of objects. The symbols contained in the traditional wedding ceremony include ceno, sirih, pinang, gambir, soda, and tobacco.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of digital media in enhancing student engagement and learning in Indonesian language education. The research aims to analyze the impact of digital media on three dimensions of engagement: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving surveys of 300 high school students and in-depth interviews as well as classroom observations with 10 Indonesian language teachers from various institutions. Quantitative data revealed a significant increase in student engagement, with average scores of 85% for cognitive, 78% for emotional, and 82% for behavioral engagement after the implementation of digital media. Qualitative analysis supports these findings, highlighting interactive features such as gamification, multimedia resources, and collaborative platforms as key factors driving student engagement. Digital media not only enhances deeper cognitive processing and emotional connections but also facilitates active participation in learning activities. This study underscores the importance of teacher training and institutional support to optimize the use of digital media, thereby creating more dynamic and effective learning experiences in Indonesian language education.

Abstract

Motivation and learning autonomy determine the level of success in learning languages; even the relationship between the two is considered to affect each other. Learning Indonesian for academic purposes is still underdeveloped at the university level regarding student motivation and learning autonomy. Therefore, understanding both terms can accommodate all parties involved in the learning process toward students' strategies, styles, and needs. This study investigates how the relationship between motivational constructs and autonomy contributes to the sustainability of the Indonesian learning process with academic purposes in higher education. This qualitative study was conducted among 34 undergraduate students who took the general basic Indonesian course at Universitas Trisakti Jakarta. Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed using google form and calculated using a Likert scale of 1 to 4, from strongly agree to strongly disagree to measure the extent to which students show their level of motivation and autonomy in learning academic Indonesian. The results of this study show that the majority of students have instrumental motivation, namely to obtain the passing grade required by Indonesian language course. This answer is closely related to students' belief which is obtained in the Indonesian language course that can help them in facing various tasks in other courses in terms of using academic Indonesian. Regarding learning autonomy, students identified among others, ability, responsibility, and confidence in directing the learning process. This study concludes that students show high motivation and proportionally equal to their learning autonomy.

Abstract

In the digital era, interaction in online buying and selling transactions is a key element in building effective communication between sellers and buyers. One form of communication that has a significant role in e-commerce is directive illocutionary speech acts, which are used to influence the actions of speech partners. However, studies on the usage pattern of this speech act in the context of live streaming are still limited. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the types and functions of directive illocutionary speech acts that appear in the interaction between sellers and buyers on Shopee Live. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study collected data from observation and recording of conversations on Shopee Live sessions within a certain time span. The results showed that the five types of directive illocutionary speech acts found include ordering, commanding, requesting, recommending, and advising. Of the five types, the speech act of recommendation is most dominantly used, while the speech act of advising is least common. The findings indicate that in online buying and selling transactions, sellers tend to use recommendation strategies to attract buyers' attention and increase their interest in the product. This study contributes to the development of pragmatics studies in digital communication and can be used as a reference for e-commerce businesses in designing more effective communication strategies on live streaming platforms.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of local wisdom values in Deli Malay pantun, especially those used in traditional wedding ceremonies, as well as efforts to preserve them through the telangkai profession in North Sumatra. Using semiotics and structuralism theories, this study found local wisdom values in 18 pantuns that are preserved in each stanza. These pantuns reflect the principles of politeness and respect in social interaction, where the ethics of speaking with pantun becomes a symbol of respect between individuals and groups. Respect for culture is also evident in the spirit of preserving Malay customs to be remembered and passed on to the next generation. The symbolism of nature in pantun, such as the rambai tree and mango fruit, teaches people to appreciate time and process in life. This research also highlights the role of the telangkai profession as the guardian of Malay pantun preservation. As professional pantun speakers, telangkai play an important role in maintaining this oral tradition in traditional ceremonies. However, this profession faces great challenges due to the influence of mass media and popular culture. To survive, some telangkai in North Sumatra have started to adopt digital media to disseminate pantun and involve the younger generation in the preservation of this oral literature. Preservation efforts through training, workshops, and pantun competitions are also carried out by cultural communities to arouse public interest in Malay pantun.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the gender construction portrayed in the novel Virgin of Adolescents in the Grip of the Military by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and its relevance as a teaching material in high school education. Written in 1941, the novel depicts the lives of women during the Japanese occupation in Indonesia, focusing on the struggles of women who faced obstacles imposed by military power. Amidst hardship and social inequality, women of that era had a strong desire to pursue higher education, despite the repression from the Japanese occupiers. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing intrinsic elements of the novel such as characters and themes, and connecting them to the historical-social context of the time. The findings show that the novel portrays women's resistance through radical actions as a response to gender injustice. Furthermore, the study discusses the relevance of this novel as a potential teaching material in high schools, based on interviews with Indonesian language teachers at SMA Swasta Nurani Belawan. The use of this novel is expected to enhance students' understanding of gender issues and foster a more equitable perspective on women's roles in history.

Through a questionnaire given to certified BIPA instructors, this study evaluates various aspects of audiovisual media usage, including media utilization, concept understanding, instructor skills, and the appropriateness of the material presented. The results show that audiovisual media based on Batak Toba cuisine is effective in introducing vocabulary and Indonesian culture, but challenges remain regarding material appropriateness and a deeper understanding of concepts. This research is expected to serve as a foundation for developing more culturally-based and innovative BIPA teaching materials to improve the quality of BIPA learning in the future.
