Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of using audiovisual media and picture series on students' short story writing skills. The study is motivated by the low interest and motivation among students in writing, as well as their difficulties in generating ideas, composing cohesive sentences, and using engaging language. A quasi-experimental approach was employed, involving two experimental groups: one group learned using audiovisual media, while the other used picture series. Data on writing skills were collected through performance tests conducted before and after the treatment. The results showed that students who learned using audiovisual media achieved higher average scores in writing skills compared to those who used picture series. Audiovisual media proved to be more effective in helping students express ideas, structure stories, and use more engaging language. Additionally, the study identified an interaction between the type of learning media and students' initial writing abilities, with audiovisual media showing significant benefits for both high- and low-ability students. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate learning media to enhance students' motivation and writing skills. Teachers are encouraged to utilize audiovisual media as an alternative in teaching short story writing to create a more engaging and effective learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of Grammatical Cohesion contained in the vice presidential candidate debate in 2024 and its utilization as teaching material in high school. This research was conducted using descriptive method with the research object of the 2024 vice presidential candidate debate. The data collection techniques used were documentation study techniques and content analysis. Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data presentation, conclusion and verification. Based on the results of the analysis, 25 reference devices, 6 substitution devices, 20 conjunction devices were found. Each of these Grammatical Cohesion elements has a very important role because it can create sentences that are interrelated with one another, so that listeners better understand every message conveyed in the debate. The findings can provide deep insight for students about the use of cohesion in oral communication, so as to improve students' ability to understand texts, besides that the findings of this study can be utilized as the development of teaching materials that are more interactive and contextual. The vice presidential candidate debate event analyzed for the use of grammatical cohesion can be used as an example in teaching materials, so that these learning activities can encourage students to practice making cohesive sentences in oral discourse skills, one of which is in a debate.

Abstract

This study examines the inner conflicts in the novel Percobaan Setia by Soeman H.S. using Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. The novel portrays the struggles of Syamsuddin, an orphan, as he faces psychological challenges, social pressures, and economic constraints that trigger inner conflicts.  The findings reveal that the need for love and belonging (17 conflicts) and esteem (15 conflicts) are the dominant sources of conflict, whereas physiological needs account for only 9 conflicts. These results highlight that unmet emotional and social needs more frequently drive inner conflicts compared to physical needs. The resolution of these conflicts underscores the importance of emotional relationships in achieving psychological balance. This research contributes to theoretical development by linking the hierarchy of human needs to literary narratives, particularly within the context of Malay culture. Practically, the findings can be utilized in literature teaching to deepen character analysis and in bibliotherapy to explore emotional experiences through literary characters.

Abstract

This study analyzes the poetry collection Bunatin by Dheni Kurnia using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, focusing on how signs in the poems construct meaning and represent Bunatin as a symbol of Talang Mamak's cultural identity and ecology. The analysis reveals that Bunatin is not merely a female figure but also a metaphor for Bumi Talang, which has undergone exploitation and social transformation. Using the concepts of sign, object, and interpretant, this study uncovers how the diction in the poems reflects the social struggles and passive resistance of the Talang Mamak community against marginalization and environmental degradation. The use of iconic and indexical elements illustrates the close relationship between humans and nature, reinforcing Bunatin as a collective symbol of ancestral land. The study affirms poetry as a symbolic medium of resistance against environmental exploitation and cultural identity erosion.

Abstract

This study, titled “Literature and Environment: Ecological Facts and Relationships in the Short Story Collection Negeri Asap,” aims to examine (1) environmental issues, (2) narrative facts, and (3) the relationship between humans and nature in the short story collection Negeri Asap, using an ecocritical approach. The method employed is a descriptive narrative method. Data were collected through literature review and note-taking techniques. Of the seventeen short stories in the collection, four were selected as objects of analysis: Rumah di Ujung Kampung, Hantu Penunggu Pohon, Gadis Penunggu Hujan, and Keluh Kesah. This study identified a total of 66 data points, consisting of 9 data related to environmental issues, 51 narrative facts, and 6 data on human-nature relationships. The findings are as follows. First, the environmental issues identified include illegal logging, air pollution, forest fires, flooding, ozone layer depletion, and land conversion-driven displacement. Second, the narrative facts in the stories are categorized into three main elements: character, plot, and setting. The characters play a vital role in voicing environmental concerns and presenting various perspectives on environmental degradation. Third, the human-nature relationship is portrayed in two forms: a mutually dependent relationship and a disharmonious one caused by environmental exploitation. Through emotionally engaging narratives, the author conveys criticism of human actions that harm the environment and emphasizes the importance of environmental preservation to maintain ecosystem balance. Based on the results, the study concludes that short stories can serve as an effective medium for social reflection, raising public awareness of environmental issues and encouraging behavioral change for a more sustainable future.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of YouTube learning videos on the procedural writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMK Pangeran Antasari. This research employs a descriptive quantitative approach using a true experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest control group. The research design consists of two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The population was selected using probability sampling techniques, with students from the XI Busana class as the experimental group and students from the XI DKV class as the control group. Data collection was conducted through pre-test and post-test assessments for each class. The test used included assessment criteria for procedural text writing. Statistical data processing was performed using SPSS 25. The data showed normal and homogeneous distributions based on normality and homogeneity tests. The results of the independent t-test calculation indicated a significance value of 0.001 < 0.005, leading to the rejection of H0. The findings suggest that the use of YouTube learning videos in teaching procedural text writing to eleventh-grade vocational school students is more effective than conventional learning methods. This confirms a significant difference between using YouTube learning videos and conventional teaching methods.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited number of critical studies on regional songs as representations of social and cultural realities within local communities, particularly in Bangka. The popular song “Yok Miak” in this region contains narratives of collective identity, cultural values, and power relations that have yet to be thoroughly examined in academic discourse. Therefore, this research aims to reveal the social representations and cultural dynamics of Bangka society embedded in the song “Yok Miak” by employing Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data consists of the song's lyrics, with sources obtained from textual documents, informal interviews with local cultural figures, and observation of the social context in Bangka. Data collection techniques include documentation, participatory observation, and open interviews, while data analysis is based on Van Dijk’s analytical framework covering macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The findings indicate that the song not only conveys local values such as mutual cooperation and social responsibility but also reflects resistance to external cultural influences and efforts to preserve Bangka Malay identity. The song functions as an ideological medium that reinforces collective awareness through discursive strategies that emphasize positive self-representation and the cultural values embedded within the community.

Abstract

Lancang Kuning is one of the Malay cultural heritages that embodies values of leadership. As part of oral tradition, this song serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying social and moral messages. This study aims to analyze the meaning of leadership in Malay culture as reflected in the lyrics of Lancang Kuning using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The method employed is qualitative descriptive with text analysis and literature review techniques. The analysis follows Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework: (1) textual analysis, which explores the language structure, metaphors, and symbolism in the lyrics; (2) discursive practice analysis, which examines how the song is used within Malay society to reinforce leadership values; and (3) social practice analysis, which investigates the relevance of the song in the context of contemporary Malay leadership. The findings reveal that Lancang Kuning represents an ideal form of leadership in Malay culture through the symbols of the helmsman as the leader, the rudder as policy, and the storm as challenges faced in leadership. The song emphasizes the importance of wise and knowledgeable leaders to ensure the ship (society) does not sink into uncertainty. The main contribution of this study lies in its reinforcement of discourse studies by highlighting oral cultural heritage as a form of social construction that conveys local leadership values. Furthermore, the research enriches the understanding of leadership dynamics in Malay culture and opens space for further exploration of cultural texts as reflections of a society’s social and ideological structures.

Abstract

This study aims to develop comic media as a result of the transfer of the folklore of the History of Teluk Gelam Lake, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency through the Canva application in class X at MAS Darussalam Lempuing Ogan Komering Ilir. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate) but this study was only carried out up to the Develop stage, without continuing to the Disseminate stage. The product was developed based on a needs analysis obtained through questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers. The results of the analysis indicate that Canva-based comic media is needed as a learning tool. The learning media design stage begins with writing a script, making a flowchart, and a storyboard as the initial framework for developing comic media. The development stage is carried out using the Canva application to produce comic media that is in accordance with learning needs. Expert validation is carried out on aspects of material, media, and language. Based on the feasibility test that has been carried out by experts, this product as a whole is declared very feasible. In terms of material, the percentage of feasibility is 94.4% with a very feasible category. The media aspect obtained 93.7% with a very feasible category, and the language aspect obtained 85.7% with a very feasible category. Product revisions were carried out according to the suggestions of the validator. With these results, Canva-based comic media was declared very feasible to be used as a learning medium. The development of comic media as a result of the transfer of the historical folklore of Lake Teluk Gelam through the Canva application is expected to be developed and continued to the final stage. This comic-based learning media needs to be tested on students and teachers to assess its effectiveness in supporting the learning process and the achievement of learning objectives. This is important because this study only reached the expert validation and product revision stages. Therefore, additional testing is needed to ensure that this comic media is effective and the validity of this comic media in improving students' understanding of the material presented.

Abstract

Writing exposition texts requires clear logic and argument structure, but many students still have difficulty organising ideas coherently due to their weak ability to build logical relationships between ideas. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the ADIKSIMBA technique as a logical thinking development method in improving students' exposition text writing ability. Different from conventional methods that only emphasise text structure without guiding the thinking process, ADIKSIMBA offers a systematic thinking framework that helps students develop arguments gradually and logically. This study used a Classroom Action Research (PTK) approach consisting of 4 stages, namely planning, action, observation and reflection with the subject of 28 class X students at SMK Negeri 1 Surabaya. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and interviews, as well as triangulation using analysis techniques consisting of data reduction, data presentation, verification and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the ADIKSIMBA technique effectively improved students' exposition writing skills logically, systematically and creatively, with an average score of 83.6 in cycle II. A total of 64.3% of students were in the high and very high categories, with the language quality aspect recording the highest score (88.1), followed by logical argument (84.3) and text structure (78.5). It can be concluded that ADIKSIMBA is a logical thinking strategy that can be used in improving students' ability to write coherent exposition texts.
