Abstract

This study aims to identify teachers’ needs for a Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment in science, develop a standardized assessment instrument, evaluate its psychometric quality, and measure Grade 8 students’ HOTS performance. The research employed the Mardapi development model, which includes test specification, item writing, expert review, pilot testing, item analysis, revision, assembly, administration, and score interpretation. Participants consisted of four teachers for needs analysis, six students for readability testing, 95 students for limited trials, and 123 students for large-scale trials. Data were collected through interviews and empirical testing. Item analysis was conducted using item analysis software to examine validity, reliability, discrimination index, difficulty level, and distractor efficiency. The results indicate that HOTS assessment instruments are urgently needed by science teachers. The final product consists of 36 validated multiple-choice items, demonstrating high reliability (0.91), good discrimination, acceptable difficulty levels, and effective distractors. Students’ average HOTS mastery was 56.94% (moderate category), with scores ranging from 16.26% to 97.22%. The instrument is considered valid and reliable for assessing HOTS in lower secondary science.

Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ engagement in online speaking class of the eight grader students in one of junior high school in Yogyakarta. Students’ engagement were analyzed using  three main dimension: behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. This study used qualitative method with a case study design. The data were gathered through observations, semi-structured interviews and documentation. Then, the data were analyzed using Miles et al. (2014) theory involving four steps: data collection, data display, data display, conclusion drawing and verification as well as data triangulation among observations, interviews, and observations. The findings reveal that students’ behavioral engagement had a high level as reflected in their active participation, punctuality, attention, and efforts in completing tasks. Emotionally, students show excellent motivation and willingness to follow the class activities, although some students experienced anxiety and fear of making mistakes while speaking English. Furthermore, the cognitive engagement reflected in students’ ability in understanding the materials, asking questions, delivering opinions as well as applying independent learning strategies. Overall, these three dimensions indicate that online speaking learning can remain effective when supported by students’ internal motivation and teacher guidance.

Abstract

The role of social media moderation on the influence of self-concept, self-confidence, and emotional intelligence on student interpersonal communication   Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of self-concept, self-confidence, and emotional intelligence with social media as a moderating variable on interpersonal communication among students majoring in Office Administration at Universitas Negeri Semarang. The population and sample in this study were all 130 students majoring in Office Administration at Universitas Negeri Semarang in the class of 2023. This study used non-probability sampling with a saturated sampling technique. Data analysis techniques used descriptive statistical analysis, inferential statictical analysis, and hypothesis testing with the help of the Smart PLS application. The results of the study indicate that self-concept, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, and social media have a positive and significant influence on interpersonal communication. However, self-confidence and emotional intelligence moderated by social media have a negative and insignificant effect. Meanwhile, self-concept moderated by social media has a positive and significant effect.

Abstract

An ethnomathematical study of the Grand Cultural Parade of Dorok Hamlet   Abstract: Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract science and separate from everyday life, thus impacting low interest in literacy and numeracy, especially in rural areas. In fact, in the cultural practices of traditional communities, mathematical concepts have long been present and applied contextually through rituals and traditions passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to examine the concept of ethnomathematics in the Grand Cultural Parade of Dorok Hamlet, Manggis Village, Puncu District, Kediri Regency, East Java, which is held every Sura Month in the Dorok Hamlet Cultural Heritage area. The study used a mixed method (mixed methods) with qualitative and quantitative approaches supported by literature review, with data obtained through observation and interviews as well as in the implementation of PPK Ormawa HIMAPTIKA activities. The results of the study show that the Sura calendar reflects cyclic mathematical regularity through periodicity and windu cycle patterns, the Gambyong Dance floor pattern represents the concept of geometry and symmetry, and the making of gunungan reflects the application of spatial geometry, proportion and balance implicitly. These findings confirm that local cultural practices can be a context for contextual and meaningful mathematics learning to foster literacy and numeracy of the younger generation through an ethnomathematics approach..
