Abstract

Liquid e-cigarettes have become a popular new form of addictive tobacco products. The increasing prevalence of e-cigarette and smoking behaviors has led the government to increase tobacco tax rates every year. While this policy boosts state revenues, it also poses challenges for conventional and e-cigarette businesses, including tobacco farmers. Excise tariffs for liquid e-cigarettes are divided into open and closed system types, with the method of filling the liquid is the key distinction. Users can manually refill the open system, the closed system cannot be refilled. Despite both containing cigarette liquid, the percentage of raising excise taxes is higher for the open system than the closed system. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the increase of excise taxes on business competition between open and closed systems of liquid e-cigarettes. Using descriptive analysis, literature review, and a basic quantitative approach, this study found that differences in excise tax rates on e-cigarettes encourage competition and create unequal treatments. The higher excise tax on open systems has created a polemic in sustainability of small entrepreneurs in the tobacco sector. The role of the government as a regulator is very important in ensuring fair and responsive policies in order to create conducive business competition between open and closed system liquid e-cigarettes.

Abstract

Poverty is an ongoing challenge faced by every country. In Indonesia, the agricultural sector – despite being a productive sector crucial to economic growth – is still associated with high poverty rates. Provinces with the highest poverty rates are dominated by those with the highest role in the agricultural sector, such as NTT, Maluku, Gorontalo, Aceh, and Bengkulu. Other factors that are said to have effects on poverty are population density and economic growth. In fact, economic growth can be accelerated to overcome poverty. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of economic growth, population density, and agricultural sector on poverty levels in provinces based on agricultural sector areas in Indonesia for the period 2014-2023. The study applied the panel data method with the fixed effect model. The variables were economic growth, population density, contribution of the agricultural sector, and poverty. The data were collected by taking a sample of five provinces based on agricultural sector areas in Indonesia. The results revealed that these three variables had a negative and significant effect on poverty in the studied provinces. Of the five provinces with the largest agricultural sector areas in Indonesia, the highest poverty coefficient values were recorded by NTT, Aceh, Maluku, Bengkulu, and Gorontalo.

Abstract

Fluctuations in world crude oil prices significantly impact oil-importing countries like Indonesia. These fluctuations affect multiple sectors, including the import of consumer goods, which is vital for the domestic economy. In Indonesia, consumer goods are crucial for economic stability. Thus, understanding how oil price fluctuations influence imports is essential for policymaking. This study investigates the relationship between world crude oil price fluctuations and the import value of consumer goods in Indonesia over an extended period. A quantitative approach was used, treating world crude oil prices as the independent variable and the import value of consumer goods as the dependent variable. Linear regression analysis, supported by descriptive statistical methods, was employed to assess this relationship. The results indicate that world crude oil prices have a significant effect on the import value of consumer goods, with data showing near-normal distribution and low skewness and kurtosis, validating the model. However, positive autocorrelation in the residuals suggests the need for further analysis to ensure the reliability of the model. These findings offer important insights for policymakers on managing the economic impact of oil price volatility on Indonesia’s domestic market. Future research could explore additional factors, such as inflation or trade policy, that may influence this relationship, contributing to more effective economic strategies.

Abstract

Poverty in rural areas is still one of the main challenges that hinders the improvement of people's welfare, especially in the Lok Baintan Floating Market area. Despite the abundant potential of local natural resources and culture, the lack of innovation and effective use of technology and marketing has led to limitations in developing the creative economy. Therefore, this research was conducted to formulate a creative economy development strategy based on local potential to increase community income in the region. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. In particular, it explored case studies in three main villages: Lok Baintan Village, Sungai Tandipah Village, and Paku Alam Village. To achieve the objectives, data was obtained through in-depth interviews with village officials and business actors. In addition to that, field observations and documentation studies related to local economic policies and potential were also employed to enrich the data reliability. The data were then analyzed using the SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that affect the development of the creative economy in the Floating Market area. The results showed that despite potential advantages such as low start-up capital and abundant human resources, the main obstacles were related to the lack of innovation, marketing technology, and infrastructure support. Therefore, the proposed strategy includes increasing the capacity of business actors through innovation training, optimizing the use of digital media, and strengthening the role of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in managing the creative economy. Thus, implementing this strategy is expected to increase community income and encourage sustainable creative economic growth in the Lok Baintan Floating Market area.

Abstract

The craft industry requires creativity, skills, and talent to transform products into goods with economic value. In Rajapolah, the craft industry is expected to become a major contributor to both local and national economies. However, the intense competition and declining consumer interest in craft products pose significant challenges. Therefore, craft-based MSMEs need to find effective solutions to enhance their competitive advantage. This study aims to analyze the competitive advantage of craft MSMEs through the value chain approach. It tries to identify effective strategies for developing and expanding the creative economy of MSMEs in Rajapolah. This research adopted a qualitative approach. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving 15 creative MSME actors in Rajapolah. The interviews were conducted directly with business actors who process raw materials into finished products for both domestic and international markets. The findings indicate that the application of technology presents a significant opportunity for MSMEs to increase their competitiveness and expand their market reach. Digital technology, particularly in online sales systems, emerges as a key factor that should be maximized. Although several MSME producers have started using online sales channels, they have not yet optimized this potential. Therefore, more focused and strategic use of digital platforms is expected to open up broader marketing opportunities for Rajapolah craft MSMEs, allowing them to reach beyond local consumers and compete in wider markets.

Abstract

Islamic finance plays a strategic role in supporting inclusive and sustainable economic development. One important sector that requires attention is the agricultural sector, which directly contributes to the achievement of several SDGs. This research analyzed potential Islamic finance schemes supporting agricultural sector financing and its impact on achieving SDGs. It employed a qualitative method with a literature study approach supported by relevant secondary data. The research investigated journal articles primarily sourced from Google Scholar with a range of research years from 2019 to 2024. As a result, 8 articles were obtained. Meanwhile, secondary data related to Islamic finance was obtained from the official websites of related banks, OJK, and SGIE Report. The results of this study show that Islamic financial schemes that can be a solution are salam financing, mudharabah, musyarakah, and waqf. Salam financing, for example, provides a solution for farmers to obtain working capital at the beginning of the planting season. Meanwhile, mudharabah and musyarakah allow for a fair partnership pattern with risk and profit sharing. On the other hand, waqf, especially productive waqf, offers a long-term orientated scheme to support agricultural infrastructure and farmer empowerment without additional financial burden. The impact of Islamic financing on the SDGs is significant, especially in enhancing resilience, responsible production and consumption, and climate improvement. The results of this study are expected to provide practical recommendations for Islamic finance stakeholders in supporting a sustainable agriculture sector and add insight for readers regarding Islamic finance for the agriculture sector.

Abstract

The interaction between business sectors in Central Kalimantan Province exhibits potential spatial dependence. Economic activities in one region can influence economic dynamics in other districts/cities. This study aims to cluster 17 business sectors to identify patterns of spatial dependence among districts/cities in the region. This research analyzed data from the 2022 Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at Constant Prices by business sector for each district/city in Central Kalimantan Province. The analysis was conducted using the Moran's Index and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) approach, employing the Queen Contiguity spatial weight matrix through the Geoda software. The results indicate that not all economic sectors exhibit significant spatial dependence. Out of the 17 sectors analyzed, 14 show patterns of spatial dependence among districts/cities. Meanwhile, the remaining sectors do not exhibit strong spatial relationships. These dependency patterns suggest the potential for economic influence across regions. This potential can be leveraged for more effective development strategies. By understanding the clustering of economic sectors with spatial linkages, this study contributes to formulating economic development strategies based on inter-district collaboration. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for regional economic policy planning to promote more inclusive and sustainable growth in Central Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Abstract

Inflation is an important economic issue and the main focus of a country's monetary policy. Nowadays, technological advances have increased the use of electronic money (e-money) as a means of payment, which has the potential to affect inflation. In addition, money supply, exchange rates, and interest rates are also factors that affect the inflation rate. This study aims to analyze the effect of e-money, money supply, exchange rates, and interest rates on inflation in Indonesia in the period 2014-2024. It used a quantitative method with a multiple linear regression approach. The data used were secondary data obtained from Bank Indonesia, Statistics Indonesia, and the Indonesian Ministry of Trade. Tests were conducted using the SPSS-25 application with various classical assumption tests such as normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation. Additionally, descriptive statistical tests and partial (t-test) and simultaneous (F-test) significance tests were also applied. The results show that, partially, e-money and exchange rates had no significant effect on inflation. In contrast, money supply had a positive and significant effect on inflation, while interest rates had a significant effect with a positive direction. Simultaneously, the four independent variables significantly influence inflation with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 80.4%, which means that most of the variation in inflation can be explained by these variables. These results indicate that effective monetary policy in controlling money supply and interest rates is very important in managing inflation in Indonesia.
