Abstract

Dental caries is the highest-frequency oral disease. The purpose of this study is to assess the risk of developing dental caries for groups of children aged three to six in the city of Varna, Bulgaria, taking into account clinical risk factors. The population of this study included 300 children aged 3 to 6 years. Hence, as many 30 children for the experimental and 30 children for the control groups were included in the study with saliva tests. After that, standardized means of decayed, filled surfaces (DFS) index was estimated. The teeth of the children in the experimental group were covered for three months with Clinpro™ White Varnish. The Research Ethics Committee at the MU-Varna University approved the study. We applied the Greene and Vermillion oral hygiene index. Biostatistics was conducted with a specialized package for statistical analyzes was used StatSoft, STATISTICA manual (Software system for data analysis STATISTICA 10.0, 2010. The results in our study show the strong influence of carbohydrate nutrition and poor oral hygiene on the development and progression of the caries process. The results of the study of the frequency of caries lesions on surfaces show a value of 6.35±0.65. Caries lesions on 1 and 2 surfaces predominate (23.75%). Almost 100% of the children in the control group had Streptococcus mutans and a high risk of caries. From the risk assessment results obtained for each child patient, individual prevention programs are prepared for children.

Abstract

Stigma has become one of the aspects closely associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), causing adverse effects for those affected. The primary goal of this scoping review is to identify various intervention models aimed at reducing HIV-related stigma. This review follows the PRISMA 2015 guidelines and utilizes sources from three online journal databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. Search criteria include articles published in the last five years, from 2018 to 2023. Out of the initially retrieved 1,084 articles, 9 articles meeting inclusion criteria were selected for a more in-depth review. Most interventions typically employ a mix of strategies, incorporating diverse degrees of social-ecological involvement. Interventions employing dual strategies and extended durations with multiple sessions have the potential to more effectively reduce stigma. Supporting HIV-safe spaces and encouraging community involvement to understand the link between HIV stigma and the spread of HIV/AIDS in their surroundings can effectively reduce HIV stigma. Overall, most studies included in this review indicate fairly satisfactory outcomes. However, when implementing interventions, it remains crucial to tailor them to the specific location, considering that stigma is a social construct. The development of instruments to measure intervention effectiveness needs to be pursued to comprehensively identify significant intervention impacts.

Abstract

Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) contain the flavonoid quercetin which can be used as an antihyperlipidemic drug. The development of antihyperlipidemic drug formula in the form of fast disintegrating tablet (FDT) is needed for patients who experience dysphagia. FDT preparations require an optimal super disintegrant concentration to produce a good drug formula. This study aims to develop the FDT formula of bay leaves extract using the super disintegrant croscarmellose sodium (CCS) intra and extra-granular. FDT formulation using the wet granulation method with variations of CCS concentrations; F1: 2%, F2: 3.5%, and F3: 5% for extra granular, and 2% for intra granular. The formulation process, in-process control (IPC) granules, weight uniformity tests, and various physical properties tests of tablets were carried out. Data were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA test (α=95%). The results of statistical tests of IPC granules, uniformity of weight, and tablet size of all FDT formulas were not significantly different (p>0.05). The CCS concentration for extra granular significantly affected the wetting time, disintegration time, hardness, and the value of friability percentage of FDT (p<0.05). The combination of intra and extra-granular CCS (2%:5%) gave the most optimum physical properties of bay leaf extract FDT.

Abstract

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a progressive health problem that has increased morbidity and mortality. However, studies on validating measures of anxiety and depression symptoms of CHF patients are still limited. The observational study enrolled 53 CHF patients who visited the Internal Medicine Department of Subulussalam General Hospital, Aceh, Indonesia. By using the total sampling method, the sample inclusion criteria were patients who were diagnosed with CHF and never consumed antidepressants before the diagnosis. Diagnosis data of CHF and its classification were obtained from clinical findings by an internist and evaluation of chest X-ray imaging with CTR>50%. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used in this study to show the prevalence of patients with depression and anxiety symptoms in Aceh, Indonesia. This finding might be valuable to Indonesian public policy in the context of health services.

Abstract

Preventing healthcare errors and reducing damage are becoming the basic concepts of patient safety development. Healthcare personnel need to be more careful and minimize complications that can occur during patient care. Psychological empowerment is important to support a safety culture and patient outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between psychological empowerment (PE) and patient outcome (PO) mediated by patient safety culture (PSC). A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in private hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International. A total of 150 healthcare personnel as participants who met the requirements were obtained by distributing the questionnaires in March 2023. Significant results in mediating patient safety culture have been analyzed using partial least square-structural equation modeling (SEM). The dimensionality of PE and PSC was assessed by a new method that is a disjoint two-stage approach. The role of PSC was found to fully mediate the positive relationship between psychological empowerment and patient outcome (=0.436, p-value 0.05). This study contributes to growing the value of developing a safety culture and the function of psychological empowerment in healthcare staff to enhance patient outcomes.

Abstract

A quick and self-administrative screening tool to detect dependence on various substances is vital in the early detection of multiple substance dependence. This study aimed to validate the severity of the dependence scale Indonesian version (SDS-Ina) in a sample of clinically diagnosed substance-related disorder subjects. The study was an observational study and rapid assessment of suspected patients with drug and alcohol dependence in an outpatient psychiatric unit in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The translated severity of dependence scale-Indonesia (SDS-Ina) questionnaire was given out to 65 subjects through an online form. The content validity of the translated SDS was assessed with Aiken’s V, and concurrent validity was analyzed in comparison to the Diagnostic of Statistical and Manual Mental Disorder IV (DSM-IV) diagnosis criteria with Pearson correlation coefficient and factor validity through principal component analysis (PCA). Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s Alpha and test-retest reliability. Aiken’s V index concluded that our content validity was valid (all>0.75). A Pearson correlation coefficient of=0.93 (P<0.001), PCA of all items ≥0.60 further validates the SDS-Ina. Internal reliability of Cronbach’s Alpha 0.907 and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC): all≥0.75). In conclusion, the translated SDS is a valid and reliable tool to measure the psychological dependence of Indonesian subjects involved in this study.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is an important process for infants including their nutrition, immune system support, digestibility, bonding, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. The breastfeeding rate in Thailand is low compared to Asian countries, but the rate is high for Southern Thailand. This study aimed to examine the household factors (religion) associated with breastfeeding practices in the household in Southern Thailand. This study used secondary data multiple indicators cluster survey (MICS) in 2022. The final sample of this study was 1,176 children under two years. The univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (binary logistic regression) were done using STATA version 17. The percentage of ever breastfed was high which was 97%. The factors of religion (AOR 3.45 95% (1.55–7.69)) and secondary school of education level of the household head (AOR 0.32 95% (0.15–0.67)) were found significantly associated with ever breastfeeding practice. There is a powerful role of religious leaders to empower women to breastfeed infants according to social and religious perspectives.

Abstract

This study explores the feasibility of leveraging consumer reviews for passive surveillance of foodborne illnesses, drawing parallels with pharmacovigilance systems. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, including a literature review, qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, and quantitative analysis of 56,000 restaurant reviews using a bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT-based) aspect-based sentiment analysis model, the study seeks to understand the potential of social media data in enhancing food safety regulations. Despite the promise shown by the aspect-based analysis in identifying hygiene-related concerns, challenges such as data reliability, language diversity, and the absence of verifiable evidence limit the direct application of consumer reviews for regulatory purposes. Key informants highlighted the need for a tailored surveillance system, considering the Indian restaurant industry’s diversity and scale. The quantitative analysis revealed hygiene concerns in a significant portion of reviews, yet the specificity and verifiability of these complaints remain issues. The study suggests a cautious yet optimistic approach towards integrating social media data into foodborne illness surveillance, emphasizing the enhancement of traditional reporting mechanisms, targeted awareness campaigns, and industry collaboration. The findings advocate for a comprehensive strategy that includes developing a common platform for stakeholder communication and strengthening policy frameworks to support a collaborative surveillance system, particularly in developing contexts like India.

Abstract

Good performance can be produced from a structured, systematic, and continuous training pattern. However, a lack of calorie intake during exercise will worsen the athlete's performance. Adequate and appropriate calorie intake can help athletes perform well. Eating habits will greatly affect the availability of calories in athletes. This literature review aims to describe the effects of caloric intake and eating habits of athletes from various literature. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) is the approach employed. The database is taken from Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science (WOS), and Pubmed. 16 articles were analyzed through purpose, topic suitability, sample, research protocol, results, and discussion. The results of this literature review explain that athletes tend to experience less calorie intake caused by poor eating habits. Low knowledge of nutrition makes athletes practice wrong eating/dieting arrangements by relying on supplement intake to improve performance.

Abstract

In the era of digitalisation, working parents today rely more than ever on electronic gadgets as digital babysitters and device-led playtime to entertain their children. The study suggests that parents and their interactions with the home environment may contribute to shaping children’s screen time. However, many struggle to keep up with the immense variety of mobile applications easily downloaded online. Thus, long screen time exposure inhibits children’s ability to engage actively in physical activities as well as affects children’s well-being development. This scoping review aims to identify parental perceptions of children’s exposure to screens for a long period of time and how screen time affects children’s well-being. Five databases, including Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and ScienceDirect, were used in this research. In the initial identification stage, 218 articles were identified from the mentioned databases above. However, there were only 81 articles found to be assessed for eligibility. A total of 34 articles are eligible for analysis and reference after the exclusion and inclusion process for data collection. The findings show that the increased exposure to screens raised concerns about potential negative effects on children’s emotions and behaviour.
