Abstract

Introduction: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (SAR) is a common condition characterized by recurrent small, round, or ovoid multiple ulcers with clear boundaries and forming circles. The etiology of SAR is not yet clear, but some literature says SAR can be caused by psychological stress. Environmental changes and re-adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic can affect stress levels. Materials and Methods: The type of research conducted is analytical observational studies with a cross-sectional design. The research sample was 226 respondents of the undergraduate dental program at the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) class of 2019, 2020, 2021. Each respondent filled out the RASDX questionnaire to find out the existence of SAR and the PSS-10-C questionnaire to assess stress levels in the form of a google form. Then, the data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 with a contingency coefficient test to see the relationship between stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the incidence of SAR. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the majority of respondents were positive for SAR (20.3%). A total of 12 male respondents were positive for SAR (5.4%) and 34 female respondents were positive for SAR (15%). Measurements of stress levels attributed by the COVID-19 pandemic showed the majority of respondents experienced moderate stress (63.7%). A total of 12 respondents with mild stress, 33 respondents with moderate stress, and 1 respondent with severe stress were positive SAR. The results of the contingency coefficient test showed a value of p = 0.334. Conclusion: There is no relationship between stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the incidence of SAR. This is thought to be because the causative factors of SAR are multifactorial.

Abstract

Background: Curettage procedure cause wounds that require adjuvant therapy. One of adjuvant therapies used is hyaluronic acid. However, recently, several studies have focused on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of various natural products such as the bark of  kecemcem tree (Spondias pinnata) which has protective effect against oxidative and inflammatory changes occurs during development of mucositis. Based on this, researchers were interested examining effect of giving kecemcem bark extract on formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) in gingiva after curettage. Materials and Methods: Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups, negative control, positive control, and treatment group. Previously, rats had induced periodontal pockets by tying silk threads on mandibular incisors and after that they were curettage using a gracey curette. Negative control group was given CMC-Na, positive control group was given hyaluronic acid and treatment group was given 70% kecemcem bark extract gel. Rats were sacrificed on day 3, 5 and 7 and then histological preparations were made. Results and discussion: Average number of new blood vessels in the treatment group was higher than  control group and positive control with  two-way ANOVA test showed that average number of new blood vessels in each group had significant difference (p<0.05). This supports hypothesis that compounds found in the bark of the kecemcem tree such as beta-sitosterol, phenols, and flavonoids have effect on increasing angiogenesis in gingival wounds after curettage of Wistar rats. Conclusion: 70% kecemcem bark extract gel has effect on increasing angiogenesis in gingival wounds after curettage of Wistar rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal treatment such as curettage and requires adjuvant therapy for healing process. One of the adjuvant therapies used is hyaluronic acid. Recently, several scientific studies have focused on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of various natural products such as kecemcem tree bark (Spondias pinnata) having a protective effect against oxidative and inflammatory changes that occur during the development of mucositis. This study aims to determine the effect of 70% Spondias pinnata bark extract gel to increase collagen fiber density after curettage on wistar rats. Material and Methods: Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups, negative control (CMC-Na gel), positive control (hyaluronic acid gel), and treatment group (70% Spondias pinnata bark extract gel). Mice were sacrificed and then histological preparations were made for further observation in three fields of view using a 400x magnification light microscope. Results and Discussions:  The average collagen density scoring value was higher than the positive control group and the negative control group. The results of the Mann-Whitney U test showed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05). Flavonoids, phenols, and β-sitosterol in kecemcem bark extract (Spondias pinnata) have an effect on increasing the density of collagen fibers after curettage as indicated by the higher average scoring value in the treatment group. Conclusion: It can be concluded that 70% 0% Spondias pinnata bark extract gel has the effect of increasing the density of gingival collagen fibers after curettage in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease, namely gingivitis and periodontitis are an inflammatory condition of the periodontal tissue which involves interactions between bacteria, immune response, inflammatory reactions, and environmental factors. The main cause of periodontal disease is the proliferation of oral pathogenic biofilms. The main problems in the treatment of periodontal disease are antibiotic resistance and the side effects of using mouthwash which have increased over the last decades. Review: Manuka honey and tualang honey are popular ingredients and have antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can be used as alternative choices. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an integrative literature study on manuka honey and tualang honey against the periodontal pathogenic bacteria, namely Porphyromonas gingivalis. The material analyzed was the antibacterial properties of manuka honey and tualang honey by comparing them based on the inhibition zone, MIC and MBC values. Conclusion: Manuka honey and tualang honey have antibacterial potential against Porphyromonas gingivalis, but manuka honey is more effective in inhibiting Porphyromonas gingivalis compared to tualang honey. Manuka honey and Tualang honey can be an alternative to avoid antibiotic resistance.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by colonies of dysbiotic bacteria that form biofilms and cause destruction of the periodontal tissues. This damage can be induced by silk ligation on Sprague Dawley teeth and results in an increase in Alkaline Phosphate levels in the gingival sulcus. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of brown algae extract gel (Sargassum sp) on reducing alkaline phosphatase levels in gingival sulcus fluid in Sprague Dawley periodontitis induced by silk ligation Material and Methods: This research is True Experimental with the Pre test - Post test Control Group Design. The research sample consisted of 36 male Wistar rats which were ligated with silk to periodontitis. Rats were divided into two groups (n=18), the control group was treated with Tie-es metronidazole gel plus and brown algae extract (Sargassum sp) gel treatment with a concentration of 75%. Sampling of gingival sulcus fluid (CSG) on days 0 and 5, ALP levels were measured using a UV/V is spectrophotometer with an absorbance of 450 nm. Results and Discussions: This study showed a decrease in ALP levels after being treated with metronidazole and 75% brown algae extract gel, the normal amount of ALP levels in the reference was 53-57 U/L and increased when inflammation occurred to 8283 U / L then a significant difference was obtained. The average reduction in ALP levels from pre test to post test for each group was 39-41  /L, and there was a significant relationship between giving brown algae extract and a decrease in ALP levels (p <0.05). Conclusion: Brown algae gel extract (Sargassum sp) concentration of 75% has a lowering effect on alkaline phosphatase levels of gingival sulcus fluid in periodontitis induced by silk ligation

Abstract

Introduction: Dentoskeletal anomalies are defined as aberrations of the maxillofacial complex that negatively impact the dental and skeletal relation. Orthognathic surgery is a treatment option to rehabilitate dentoskeletal anomalies. Surgery first orthognathic is one of the orthognathic surgeries conducted prior to the orthodontic treatment. One of the problems that might occur following the surgery first orthognathic is related to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This study aimed to map the published articles about the clinical evaluation of temporomandibular joint post-surgery first orthognathic. This study used the scoping review method, following the PRISMA-ScR guideline. The search engines utilized in this study were PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, using keywords as follows, ((surgery first orthognathic) OR (surgery first orthognathic approach)) AND (temporomandibular joint). Review: A total of eight articles suit the inclusion criteria. 119 patients underwent orthognathic surgery using the surgery first orthognathic method. Post-surgery, 25.2% of patients experienced TMD improvement, 70.6% experienced no change in the normal temporomandibular joint, and 4.2% experienced TMD impairment worse than before the surgery. Conclusion: Based on the analysis results of the studies, it can be concluded that surgery first orthognathic inclines to preserve the normal condition of the patient’s temporomandibular joint before the surgery. In some cases, surgery first orthognathic yielded opportunities to relieve the TMD symptoms. However, there is a slight risk following the surgery first orthognathic, i.e., worsening of the TMD and generating new onset of TMD.

Abstract

Introduction: Gingival enlargement is a condition that we often encounter in the oral cavity. This condition can be caused by plaque accumulation, systemic disorders, and side effects of some drugs as well as genetic factors. Gingival enlargement due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque generally shows signs and symptoms of inflammation which can be a major risk factor for periodontitis. This case report aims to describe two cases of plaque-induced gingival enlargement, one of which was accompanied by the presence of granulomatous epulis. Case: The first case was a 23-year-old woman complaining that her gums often bleed when brushing her teeth since 1 year ago. Intra oral examination can see swelling of the gingiva in the anterior area of RA and RB. The second case is a 40-year-old woman with complaints of swelling of the lower right back gum since 2 years ago. An enlargement of the gingiva in the anterior area is seen accompanied by granulomatous epulis with fibrous consistency in the posterior area of RB. Treatment: In the first case, non-surgical treatment was carried out and continued with regular visits every 3 months. In the second case, non-surgical and surgical procedures were performed. Treatment begins with tooth root extraction and scaling and root planning. Furthermore, gingivectomy surgery was performed to excise the enlarged gingiva.  Discussions: The treatment results look good, where it can be seen that the etiological factor can be ruled out. After the surgical treatment, the healing went well, marked by no inflammation around it.    Conclusion: Gingival enlargement can affect aesthetics and interfere with the patient's masticatory function. Identification of the etiological factors is necessary for an appropriate treatment plan.
