Abstract

The settlements along the railway tracks are illegal settlements. The settlement is located in an area that is not intended as a developable area. The existence of the illegal settlement may cause several urban problems. Yogyakarta is one of the major cities in Indonesia and is experiencing rapid population growth. The population growth has encouraged informal settlement growth, especially for the low and middle-income population. One of the growing informal settlements in Yogyakarta is the settlement along the railway tracks in Gondokusuman District. This slum area has been inhabited since fifty years ago. The experience of living in the informal settlement has made the inhabitants build an adaptive strategy to survive in the slum area. This research was conducted to study the adaptive strategy of the slum dwellers in the settlement along the railway tracks in Gondokusuman District. This research utilizes the qualitative-inductive approach to understand the formation and the choice of the adaptation strategy of the slum dwellers in the study area. This research reveals that there are three main strategies practiced by the slum dwellers, which are (1) individual adaptation, (2) settlement adaptation, and (3) communal adaptation. The utilization of those strategies has made the slum dwellers survive in the slum area along the railway tracks.

Abstract

Urban settlements have a long, unique history as well as an early marker of the formation of urban civilization. Initially, an urban settlement was a village that was inhabited by traditional society. The modern urban development has made the image of the village faded. Bugis Village is one of several villages that formed Singaraja City at the beginning of the Dutch colonial period which served as a bustling port city. Cultural acculturation as a result of trading activities makes residential areas inhabited by various ethnicities and forms villages with certain ethnic characteristics. The data collection in this study was carried out by means of observation, interviews, and literature study. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed qualitatively descriptively. The analysis was carried out using theoretical and conceptual guidelines from the results of a literature review on urban villages and cultural heritage tourism. The results of the study stated that the tourism potential of Bugis Village qualifies as cultural heritage tourism based on tangible cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage that is more than 50 years old and is still well maintained. As a tourist destination, Bugis Village is still in the exploration stage, to realize it, steps are needed such as building revitalization, planning tourist routes, and education and community involvement for the development of urban village tourism.

Abstract

The application of the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has the potentiality to reduce private vehicles dependencies and enhance transportation sustainability. The TOD concept aims to create and regenerate urban areas, thus liveability and quality of life could be improved. As stated in the National Railway Master Plan, the construction of the railway in Sumatra that connects the entire island from the north to the south (except Bengkulu province) is going to be commenced. The train station along the railway corridors has the potentiality to be developed as transit nodes. This also means that the station along the railway corridors could be developed using the TOD concept. Therefore, this study aims to identify the area that has the highest possibility to be developed as the TOD District as well as to propose priority areas for development. This study is expected to be the basis for the planning and development of TOD (Transit Oriented Development) at the transit nodes in order to optimize the Government's assets and improve rail transportation services. This research utilizes the multi-criteria TOD Index. The result shows that Medan Station, Padang Station, Ampera Station, and Tanjung Karang Station have the highest potentiality and are recommended to be developed as the TOD District. Those stations are recommended to be developed as the Urban TOD. The development strategy recommendations for those stations are Site-Redevelopment in Medan, Ampera, and Tanjung Karang Station, and Infill-Development in Padang Station.

Abstract

The concept of living in harmony with disaster is an approach used by the society who lives in the volcano eruption disaster-prone area (Kawasan Rawan Bencana III/KRB III). This approach requires the community to be aware of the hazard resulted from volcanic activity. The government has prohibited the community to inhibit the disaster-prone area in the Merapi Volcano area in Yogyakarta. However, after the Merapi Volcano eruption in 2010, the community has gradually returned to KRB III, rebuilt their houses, and refuses to be relocated to a safer area. The National Government, through Presidential Decree number 70/2014 regarding the Spatial Plan for the Merapi Volcano National Park, has given permission to the community to inhibit the disaster-prone area/KRB III. This decision is based on the socio-culture and economic condition of the community. This decision also gained support from the Provincial Government. The community is allowed to stay in the KRB III as long as they apply the concept of living in harmony with disaster. This research utilizes the case-study approach to identify the adaptive strategy of the community that lives with the concept of living in harmony with disaster. The empirical data collected from the field observation and interviews are compared with the proposition/hypothetical data to formulate the research finding.

Abstract

Research conducted online has long been practiced and many research methods have been developed for it. But the current pandemic has prompted more research to be done online; also included in the area of urban and regional planning (PWK). This research seeks to assist PWK students in conducting online research, by introducing various online research methods, as well as ways to convert offline research proposals to online research. Because many pieces of research in the field of PWK are related to location, spatial, and physical areas, some of these studies are quite difficult to do online, but there are still many kinds of online data collection methods that can be utilized. However, online research also opens up new opportunities that were previously difficult (when using offline research methods) to do, including analysis of digital documents collected online, as well as a wider geographic coverage because data collection is done online, there is no need to visit locations.
