Abstract

This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of eccentric resistance training on muscle strength and physical performance in football players. Modern football demands high neuromuscular capacity to generate and absorb force during sprinting and changes of direction (COD), making eccentric ability an important component of performance. The literature search followed PRISMA guidelines in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science for publications from 2020 to 2025, with PICOS-based criteria for male players from youth to professional levels. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, with intervention durations of 4–12 weeks, including Nordic hamstring, flywheel inertial training, Copenhagen adduction, and eccentric free-weight training. The results showed consistent improvements in maximal strength, eccentric hamstring strength, and torque production. COD performance and countermovement jump (CMJ) also improved. However, sprint results were heterogeneous, influenced by acute muscle soreness and a lack of integration with speed-specific training. Overall, eccentric training is effective in improving neuromuscular capacity and is worth integrating into football conditioning programs. Further research is expected to explore optimal dose-response relationships and combinations of eccentric training methods.

Abstract

Sports coaching is not only influenced by the technical aspects of training, but also by the quality of social interactions between coaches, athletes, and parents. However, studies on social interactions in swimming coaching at the club level, particularly those involving these three parties, are still limited. This study aims to describe social interactions in swimming coaching at the Aqualux Garut Club using the 3+1Cs model (Closeness, Commitment, Complementarity, Co-orientation). The research method used was an ex-post facto study with a descriptive qualitative approach. The sample consisted of 10 athletes, 2 coaches, and 2 parents who were selected purposively. The research instruments were a 3+1Cs model questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that social interactions were in the very good category (average 81.5%), with the highest score in the Complementarity dimension (84%), followed by Closeness (83%), Commitment (81%), and Co-orientation (78%). Interviews corroborated the questionnaire findings, demonstrating emotional closeness, commitment, harmonious cooperation, and alignment of goals, although some athletes were still reluctant to express their opinions. The study concluded that positive social interactions play a crucial role in supporting athletes' skills, motivation, and mental well-being.

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a digital-based tool known as the Sit and Reach box, designed to measure back and hamstring flexibility with improved accuracy, efficiency, and practicality over traditional manual devices. The development of instruments capable of displaying measurement results in real-time, reducing reading bias, and accelerating the data recapitulation process is an urgent need in the Physical Education study program. Utilizing the Research and Development (R&D) methodology, specifically the Borg & Gall model, the research involved 25 students for validity testing and 75 students and athletes for reliability testing. The instrument integrates Arduino R3 technology alongside an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor and a digital LCD within a modified sit-and-reach box. Data analysis was performed through the Product-Moment validity test and Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test, yielding results that indicated high validity and reliability for the tool. The final product was deemed feasible, practical, and user-friendly while enhancing measurement efficiency, reducing reading bias, and accelerating data recap processes. Furthermore, the study established flexibility assessment norms to aid in evaluating flexibility levels. This digital flexibility test tool is thus suitable for application in practicum classes, physical condition assessments, and coaching, and holds potential for future developments in digital application integration and broader distribution to educational and sports organizations.

Abstract

This study departs from the view that swimming athletes’ achievement is not solely determined by physical ability and technical skill, but also by the quality of coaching that involves the active roles of parents and coaches working side by side. The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of each party and the pattern of collaboration between them in supporting athletes’ achievement at Bali Pari Swimming Club. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with research subjects consisting of coaches, parents, and athletes selected through a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments included an observation guide to record training situations, a semi-structured interview guide to explore participants’ experiences and perspectives, and documentation sheets to examine training programs and achievement records. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested using the technique and source triangulation. The findings indicate that parents contribute through emotional support, motivation, nutritional provision, and training facilities, while coaches design and implement structured and continuous training programs to develop athletes’ technical, physical, and mental aspects. Effective communication between both parties creates a stable training environment that supports athletes’ consistency and performance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-talk and Physical Education learning motivation and examine the differences in learning motivation based on gender in students at Senior High School 7 Bandung. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample consisted of 235 students, which included 116 male students and 119 female students who were selected through purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used were the Self-Talk Scale (STS) to measure self-talk and the Perceived Locus of Causality Questionnaire (PLOCQ) to measure the motivation to learn Physical Education. Data analysis was carried out using the Pearson Correlation test and the Independent Sample T-test. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between self-talk and Physical Education learning motivation (r = 0.174; p = 0.008), with a relatively small contribution (R² = 0.03 or about 3%). In addition, there was a significant difference in learning motivation by gender (p = 0.008), where male students had a higher level of learning motivation than female students. These findings show that self-talk is one of the psychological factors that play a role in supporting the motivation to learn Physical Education.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the influence of water play models and aquatic-based learning on motor skill development and anxiety control in elementary school swimming education. The study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles published between 2021 and 2024 were retrieved from ScienceDirect, Springer, and PubMed using keywords related to water play models, aquatic interventions, motor skills, and anxiety regulation. Of the 30 articles initially identified, five high-quality studies (Q1–Q2 indexed journals) met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a thematic synthesis approach. The findings indicate that structured water play activities significantly improve fundamental motor skills, including balance, coordination, and body control, while simultaneously reducing anxiety levels and physiological stress responses in children. Three main patterns were identified: (1) enhancement of motor proficiency through task-oriented aquatic activities, (2) reduction of anxiety through enjoyable and low-pressure water learning environments, and (3) the role of play-based aquatic pedagogy in fostering inclusive and student-centered physical education settings. This review confirms that water play models function not only as strategies for improving motor competence but also as effective approaches to supporting children’s emotional regulation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between physical activity and Body Mass Index (BMI) in students of the Faculty of Sports Science, Padang State University. This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach involving 140 students as respondents. The variables analyzed included age, BMI, and physical activity level measured using MET-min/week units. Normality test was conducted using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, while relationship and contribution analysis were conducted through correlation and regression tests. Normality test results showed that BMI and physical activity variables were not normally distributed (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed a relationship between physical activity and BMI, with the strength of the relationship classified as [weak/moderate], with a significance value of p < 0.05. Regression analysis showed that physical activity contributed [R² %] to the variation in BMI. This finding indicates that although physical activity has a relationship with BMI, other factors outside of physical activity also play a role in determining the anthropometric status of sports students. The results of this study provide an empirical picture of the characteristics of physical activity and BMI in sports students and can be the basis for developing fitness and health monitoring strategies in the University environment.

Abstract

Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed ergogenic substances worldwide, with an average daily intake among adults ranging from approximately 100–200 mg/day. In sports contexts, caffeine is commonly used at doses of around 3–6 mg/kg body weight to enhance athletic performance. However, most research on the ergogenic effects of caffeine has primarily focused on male or mixed populations, despite evidence that physiological and hormonal differences may influence female athletes’ responses to caffeine supplementation. This study aimed to systematically review current scientific evidence regarding the effects of caffeine supplementation on the physical and psychophysiological performance of elite female athletes. This study employed a systematic review design in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in the PubMed and Scopus databases for publications from 2016 to 2025. Inclusion criteria were determined using the PICOS framework, focusing on controlled experimental studies involving elite female athletes. Of the 2,254 articles identified, nine studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed qualitatively. Most studies used randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover designs and reported that caffeine supplementation at doses of 2.3–6 mg/kg body weight improved strength, speed, cognitive response, and exercise enjoyment. However, the results were not always consistent, particularly among athletes with high habitual caffeine intake or when lower doses were administered. In conclusion, caffeine may enhance the performance of elite female athletes. Nevertheless, the existing literature presents several limitations, including the limited number of studies, small sample sizes, and variability in study design, caffeine dosage, and control of hormonal factors such as the menstrual cycle. Therefore, caffeine use in female athletes requires a more individualized and gender-specific supplementation approach.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the validity of Body Mass Index (BMI) as a predictor of performance in aquatic athletes based on the Multistage Shuttle Swim Test (MSST). An ex post facto research design with a correlational approach was employed. The participants consisted of 66 national and regional-level aquatic athletes from West Java Province, representing swimming, water polo, and finswimming. BMI was measured using the Tanita Body Composition Analyzer 360, while performance was assessed using the MSST. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation as well as non-parametric Kendall’s tau-b and Spearman’s rho tests with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The results indicated no significant correlation between BMI and MSST performance (r = 0.136; p = 0.276). These findings confirm that BMI is not a valid predictor of performance in aquatic athletes.
