Abstract

Physical activity is an important factor that contributes to physiological health, as well as the psychological well-being of an individual. Participation in sport has increasingly been associated with higher levels of happiness, subjective well-being, and the development of meaning in life. However, the philosophical dimensions of sport participation remain relatively underexplored within the field of sport science literature. This study aims to examine the relationship between sport participation, happiness, and meaning in life through a narrative literature review approach. The literature search was conducted across several international academic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, using keywords related to physical activity, psychological well-being, happiness, and meaning in life. Approximately 40 relevant scientific publications were analyzed thematically to identify psychological and philosophical mechanisms linking sport participation to human well-being. The findings indicate that physical activity contributes to happiness through several mechanisms, including the enhancement of subjective well-being, the strengthening of self-efficacy, emotional regulation, and the fulfillment of basic psychological needs as described in Self-Determination Theory. In addition, experiences of challenge, achievement, and social engagement in sport play a significant role in helping individuals develop a sense of meaning in life. Therefore, sport should not only be viewed as a physical activity aimed at improving bodily health but also as an important medium for fostering psychological well-being and meaningful living. These findings highlight the importance of promoting sport participation within society as part of a broader strategy to improve overall quality of life.

Abstract

Ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in sports and frequently progresses to Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI). This condition is characterized by recurrent episodes of ankle giving way, neuromuscular control deficits, and an increased risk of recurrent injury. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CAI among university students with a history of ankle sprain using the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) and to analyze the association between several risk factors and the occurrence of CAI. This study employed a cross-sectional observational design. The sample consisted of 50 students with a history of ankle sprain. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the CAIT instrument. Descriptive statistics were used to determine CAI prevalence, and Chi-square analysis was applied to examine the association between risk factors and CAI. CAI was defined as a CAIT score ≤24. The findings showed that 72% of participants were classified as having CAI, while 28% were categorized as non-CAI. Statistical analysis revealed that recurrent ankle sprain was significantly associated with CAI (p = 0.008). In contrast, sex and athletic participation were not significantly associated with CAI (p > 0.05). The prevalence of CAI among students with a history of ankle sprain is relatively high. Recurrent ankle sprain appears to be the most significant risk factor contributing to CAI. These findings highlight the importance of sensorimotor and neuromuscular rehabilitation programs in physiotherapy practice to prevent the development of CAI.

Abstract

Pencak silat is a martial art that demands a combination of physical ability, technique, and strategy. The intermittent, high-intensity nature of the competition means that athletes' energy needs are simultaneously dominated by the anaerobic and aerobic systems. Therefore, a training model capable of accommodating these physiological demands is needed, one of which is High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). This article aims to analyze the physical and energy needs of pencak silat athletes as a basis for developing an effective HIIT training model. The method used is a literature review of various studies related to sports physiology and martial arts athlete performance. The analysis results indicate that pencak silat athletes require anaerobic endurance, muscle strength, speed, agility, and good aerobic capacity. The HIIT model is considered relevant because it can increase VO₂max capacity, lactate tolerance, and energy efficiency. Thus, developing a HIIT program based on the specific needs of pencak silat can optimally improve athlete performance.
