Abstract

Associated with the context of local wisdom, BIPA Daring as a learning media and reference for network-based BIPA activities has not been discussed in scientific article. Local wisdom is used as anticipation of BIPA learners in terms of culture shock and as a lure to attract BIPA learners. Unfortunately, the most local wisdom displayed in BIPA teaching materials raises Javanese culture only. Meanwhile, Indonesia's local wisdom is very diverse. This study aims to describe how to utilize Indonesian local wisdom material in the BIPA Daring and how to utilize it in scope of the ASEAN region. This research method uses qualitative descriptive analysis conducted in February 2022 at Pustanda. Data sources obtain from the website administrator and three BIPA teachers. Data collection techniques by direct observation and obtained by purposive sampling. Data validation is done by triangulating data sources. The results showed that BIPA Daring provides materials related to Indonesian local wisdom in two channels. The conclusion is that BIPA Daring contained the local wisdom of the Indonesian people tucked into each teaching material and the high interest of service users in the ASEAN region regarding Indonesian local wisdom

Abstract

In order to improve the level of Indonesian as an international language, the Indonesian government's Language Agency has provided Indonesian language learning institutions in various countries, including domestically. At several large universities such as Gadjah Mada University, Indonesian language training is given to foreign students who continue their studies at various faculties at UGM Yogyakarta. This study aims to observe the pronunciation ability of Indonesian vocabulary by BIPA students who study at a basic level in INCULS UGM. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. There were 5 foreign students involved as respondents which were two foreign students from Pakistan, and three other foreign students from Yemen, Jordan, and Ethiopia. The research was conducted by providing a list of 15 Indonesian vocabularies containing the object of research, such as vocabulary containing the phoneme /ŋ/, /ñ/, distinguishing the phoneme /e/ and its allophone variations, as well as various types of diphthongs. The result shows that there are misunderstandings in the form of adding the phoneme /y/ after the phonemes /ŋ/ and /ñ/, omitting one of the phonemes in the diphthong phonemes, and alternately exchanging the pronunciation of the phonemes /e/ and /ə/ in each position in Indonesian. The errors happen due to their lack of ability to distinguish the phonemes found in Indonesian from the phonemes in the foreign student's mother tongue. By conducting this research, it is expected to be helpful for educators to make decisions about the content of teaching materials, or even further for other researchers who want to pursue a better research design and result

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of knowing how students at Overnewton College learned Indonesian using the Think, Talk, and Write (TTW) learning model. This research was conducted online using Zoom as media. This research uses qualitative research with the descriptive-analytical method. The study used 11th grade students as the sample in this study. This study also examines how students' perspectives on learning are carried out and analyzes students' writing skills. Research finds that using the Think, Talk, and Write (TTW) model in learning the Indonesian language for foreign students can help students practice their speaking and writing skills in Indonesian. In conducting learning using the think, talk, write model, there are three primary stages students must go through to understand, that is, (1) think, (2) speaking, and (3) writing or expressing thoughts through written media.  In general, students' perceptions on the learning are good. Besides, students also feel happy with the learning because it uses audio-visual media that can help students' listening skills

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study investigated teacher perceptions about common BIPA learner errors and challenges, to contribute to the formation of a larger profile of Indonesian language learners and assist both materials developers and classroom teachers in anticipating and addressing these challenges. The data in this multiple case study was collected through interviews of four experienced BIPA instructors representing a range of instructor backgrounds with regard to gender, years taught, international teaching experience, and teaching context, although all were from a language, linguistics or humanities background. Learners taught ranged from approximately 15 national backgrounds, with the largest group being Australians, and most being in the A1-A2 CEFR range. Errors and challenges were identified in the areas of phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, and with regard to language contact. The participants disagreed about the usefulness of existing BIPA materials, with some suggesting the need for more specialized materials.

Abstract

In BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing or Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) teaching, photographs are one of the main sources used for providing visual support especially in reading sections. However, the effectiveness of using photos for teaching reading is not widely discussed. This article examines the use of photographs for learning reading. It seeks to reveal how photos can effectively scaffold learning activities and how photos and their accompanying texts build relationships. The study employs visual text analysis based on social semiotic frameworks - the representational metafunction and intersemiosis relationships. The findings reveals that conceptual photos dominate the type of photos, the composition of male and female participants was found to be equal and Concurrence-Clarification and Complementary-Augmentation was found as the majority of the intersemiosis relations. Several recommendations for BIPA teacher based on the conclusion are discussed at the end of this article.

Abstract

This article explores the BIPA (Indonesian as a foreign language) learners’ competency in listening conversations using a real-life approach. This is based on the background that mastering a foreign language, especially listening in real-life conversation, is difficult even though they have learned the language. To address these issues, a real-life approach was adopted to train the BIPA students to listen to the conversations in a real-world setting. This study uses the qualitative descriptive method to investigate how using a real-life approach can aid BIPA learners in developing their listening abilities. BIPA students from India, Japan, Austria, and South Korea were included as a sample in this study. As a result, the appearance of other sound variants in real-life conversation turns out to become an aspect to distract them from listening. In addition, students frequently imitate pronunciation and pick up vocabulary from the literature and environment they are listening to. Therefore, the real-life approach helps the BIPA students to have a better understanding of listening in real-world conversations. Additionally, students can distinguish between different sound variants and pinpoint the purpose of their listening.

Abstract

Interference is the effect of language learners' first language on their production of the language they are learning. It is a phenomenon that cannot be avoided by a second language learner. One of the most frequent interferences is phonological interference, as it happened to BIPA students with French as their first language. The purpose of this research is to show and explain why the phonological interference happens to them. This research is a qualitative research. The data were obtained using the free method of listening to engagement and recording techniques. The data were transcribed phonemically and phonetically, then analyzed in two ways, namely contrastive analysis and comparative descriptive analysis. Based on this research, it was found that BIPA students tend to eliminate the sound [h] which is at the beginning, middle and end of words, pronounce the sound /r/ with [R] uvular, cut syllables in Indonesian words with the syllable system in French, sometimes eliminating sound /s/, pronounce the sound /g/ with [ʒ] inconsistently, and still use the nasal vowel system in their Indonesian. It was also found that the learner's Indonesian speech was better if they spoke another foreign language with a phonological system similar to Indonesian.

Abstract

Speaking skill is an important skill in learning a language. In learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), speaking skill is considered difficult to teach because of students’ different language backgrounds. The use of repetition theory is proven to be applicable in Indonesian language learning activities in Australia. The author tries to conduct repetition theory to BIPA students at Mount Erin College. In this research, the method used is case study research with qualitative analysis. This paper aims to describe the use of repetition theory in conversation classes (oral practicing) to BIPA students and to describe the result of conversation between teacher and BIPA students simply. This research is hoped that it will provide benefit for BIPA teachers and BIPA activists in general.
