Abstract

Intercultural apprehension can affect the adaptation process of BIPA learners while in Indonesia, but research on this topic is still very limited. This study aims to measure the level of intercultural anxiety and the factors that cause this type of anxiety in Thai students when communicating with Indonesian people who have cultural differences. The data collection was conducted using a questionnaire called PRICA (Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension) and interview guidelines. The results showed that 7.1% of students experienced high levels of intercultural apprehension, 64.2% of students experienced moderate levels of intercultural apprehension and 28.5% of students experienced low levels of intercultural apprehension. Language barriers, negative prejudice, and culture shock are the main factors that give rise to this anxiety. BIPA teachers and program organizers are expected to design learning activities that can involve Thai students and Indonesian students so that intercultural apprehension can be reduced.

Abstract

BIPA is currently increasingly in demand by other nations. In addition to learning the language, BIPA students are also introduced to Indonesian culture. Indonesian culture is important and needs to be known by BIPA students so that they can understand well the cultures that exist in Indonesia. One of the BIPA learning media that can be used in learning the language and introducing Indonesian culture is through song. Indonesian songs can be in the form of an archipelago folk song that has many cultural values and moral messages or character values. This research is a descriptive study and the source of data in this study are folk songs of the archipelago. The form data is in the form of words that contain an introduction to basic vocabulary for BIPA learners. Data collection techniques are carried out by observing notes. The results of this study obtained a description of the archipelago's folk songs that can be used as Indigenous digital-based BIPA learning media. The folk songs of the archipelago include Soleram, Cut the Goose Duck, My Goats, Come on Mama, Injit-Injit Ants, and Ondel-ondel. Abstract

The development of a valid and reliable placement test instrument is very much needed in line with the increasing interest in BIPA (Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages). This research aims to produce a placement test instrument for BIPA students' reading skills. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with a 3D model (define, design, and develop). The products produced are test instruments, competence indicators, scoring, and placement guides. The test instrument consists of three packages of questions, and each package consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. The development of test questions is based on competency standards in the book "Sahabatku Indonesia untuk Umum" by PPSDK 2019. Product validation was carried out by two experts (assessment and BIPA), while the trial was conducted on ten BIPA students. The results of the validation and testing showed that the test was able to place students according to their reading ability level

Abstract

Different languages have different phonetic systems, this is the distinguishing feature of a foreign learner in learning a second language. This paper describes the phonological errors of Vietnamese students after surveying Indonesian by recording pronunciation based on the distribution of phonemes to several students from The Open University. The data was then reduced based on the consistency of students' pronunciation errors in the three participants. Every word that was successfully pronounced correctly by the three participants was considered to have been represented and was able to be pronounced by Vietnamese students. Data reduction is based on the possibility of errors that occur continuously in Indonesian foreign speakers. The results showed that students had pronunciation errors, especially the phonemes /sy/ and /r/. Based on the Vietnamese phonetic system, the author observes that students can improve their Indonesian language skills through practice with several applications on the Internet, for example, the writing application of phonetics.glideapp.io

Abstract

Literary works are authentic representations of society's socio-cultural reality. On this basic principle, literary works are particularly appropriate for use as teaching materials in international language learning.  This qualitative descriptive study aimed to identify Indonesian literary works that can be used as teaching materials for BIPA learning, as well as to construct BIPA learning designs using literature as teaching materials from an intercultural perspective. The research data originated from the works of Indonesian authors, including Clara Ng's Dongeng Tujuh Menit --which contains seven stories, Umar Kayam's Lebaran di Karet, di Karet..., and Kuntowijoyo's Impian Amerika --which contains 30 stories. Data in the form of discourse units, phrases, clauses, sentences, and words relevant to the study's focus were analyzed using Lazar, Bibby & McIllroy, and the CEFR category in grading the ability of foreign language learners to determine its relevance as teaching material from a linguistic standpoint. Repeated readings (semantic validity), referral to relevant reference materials (referential validity), and discussions with peers (interater reliability) were all used to establish the data's validity. The study's findings were as follows. First, literary works relevant to BIPA learning from an intercultural perspective were identified, with the “Cerita Wayang Sebelum Tidur” and “Padi Merah Jambu” by Clara Ng being appropriate for intermediate (B2) students, while the short stories “Lebaran di Karet, di Karet...” by Umar Kayam and “Aku Cinta Indonesia” by Kuntowijoyo being appropriate for advanced BIPA students (A2). Second, based on Liddicoat's (2011) intercultural learning model (interacting), BIPA learning with intercultural insight by using literary works as teaching materials is designed with four cyclical steps, namely (1) paying attention (noticing), (2) comparing (comparing), (3) reflecting (reflecting), and (4) interacting

Abstract

This research departs from developing BIPA teaching materials for Arabic speakers. Teaching materials are made in form of interactive learning videos presenting cultural diversity and Indonesian local wisdom. Furthermore, these BIPA learning videos are shared on social media. Therefore, learners of Arabic BIPA from various countries in the Middle East can access this material teaching. A qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. The data were obtained from observation, interviews, and documentation. The study used purposive sampling. The study results stated that those learning videos were based on the BIPA learning syllabus determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Furthermore, these learning videos are presented in a cultural package with Arabic as the language of instruction. By sharing the videos on social media, this video can help learners without the limitations of space and time

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of student action-oriented learning in BIPA 2 Class at the Indonesian Embassy in Copenhagen. Action-oriented learning is an approach that has become the standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The curriculum system and Indonesian Language Competency Standards for Foreign Speakers (SKL BIPA) adapt the curriculum from the CEFR, therefore this approach can be considered in teaching BIPA abroad, especially in Europe. This research is descriptive qualitative research, this research describes in detail and in-depth the portrait of conditions in a natural context (natural setting), about what actually happened according to what was in the field of study in the application of a learning approach oriented to student action in the classroom BIPA 2 of the Indonesian Embassy in Copenhagen. The results showed that it is easy to use this action-oriented approach because this approach is already known for foreign language learning in Europe. There are 3 phases in the lesson, namely the contextualization phase, development phase, and processing phase. In the contextualization phase, students can update and build contexts in their reflections on the topics to be learned.  In the development phase, students begin to develop their language skills. In the processing phase, students no longer have language barriers that limit their creativity. Through this approach, students can be more active in learning Indonesian language because there are lots of media that require them to be active in class.
