Abstract

The growing socio-economic inequalities in urban Indonesia have increasingly been reflected in contemporary literary works, positioning literature as a medium for articulating collective social consciousness. This study examines the short story Suara dari Jalanan by Azkiya (2025) through Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism, addressing how collective consciousness and worldview are constructed through the relationship between university students and marginalized communities in the context of economic injustice. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on literary text interpretation by examining human facts, collective subjects, meaningful structures, and worldview. The findings reveal that the narrative represents a form of social solidarity emerging as a collective response to rising living costs and structural inequality. The characters Arif and Mbah Marni symbolize a shared consciousness shaped by similar socio-economic experiences despite their differing backgrounds. This study argues that the short story functions not only as a fictional narrative but also as a critical reflection of urban social realities, demonstrating how literature articulates collective resistance and social awareness.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media, particularly Instagram, has facilitated the proliferation of humorous discourse that frequently exploits linguistic ambiguity to produce comedic effects, posing interpretive challenges for students as active social media users. This study investigates the forms of lexical and grammatical ambiguity in humorous discourse on the Instagram accounts Dagelan and Nanangsptra and examines their potential as instructional materials for anecdotal texts in senior high schools. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through reading, observing, and note-taking techniques from posts published between February and April 2025, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that lexical ambiguity manifests in polysemy and homonymy, while grammatical ambiguity arises from word-formation processes and structurally similar phrases. These patterns indicate that digital humor discourse provides authentic and contextually relevant linguistic input. The study argues that integrating such materials into classroom instruction enhances students’ interpretive competence, language awareness, and critical thinking in understanding anecdotal texts.

Abstract

Mastering a foreign language requires not only linguistic skills but also the development of intercultural competence. This study aims to analyze the use of the German children's novel entitled Emil und die Detektive by Erich Kästner as a medium for developing students' intercultural competence in German language learning in Indonesia. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis of literary works. Data in the form of narratives, dialogues, and character actions were collected through listening and note-taking, then analyzed using literary analysis with reference to Michael Byram's Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) framework. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of sources and theories. The results of the study indicate that the novel Emil und die Detektive embodies values of intercultural understanding, such as independence, solidarity, honesty, vigilance, and equal relations between children and adults. These values have the potential to be integrated into German language learning through discussion activities, interpretive writing, and literary appreciation. Therefore, language learning is not only oriented towards linguistic mastery but also contributes to the development of empathy, interpretation skills, cross-cultural interaction, and critical cultural awareness in line with Byram's ICC model.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the construction of meaning, ideological values, and social relations in Denny Sumargo’s podcast entitled “Mukjizat Tuhan, Terlahir Kembar Siam Dewi dan Putri Tidak Mau Dipisahkan.” The selection of this object is grounded in its rich humanitarian discourse and spiritual values that reflect broader social and cultural dimensions. The study addresses how meaning and ideology are constructed through discourse and how these elements shape social perceptions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using Teun A. Van Dijk’s three-dimensional framework: text structure, social cognition, and social context. The findings reveal that diction, stylistic features, and narrative structures consistently construct an image of a religious, compassionate, and resilient family facing limitations. The podcast functions as a medium for conveying moral and spiritual messages, shaping public opinion and fostering social awareness through empathetic and reflective narratives. These results demonstrate that discourse in digital media plays a significant role in constructing meaning and influencing societal values.

Abstract

This study examines the reference and functions of swear words in the film Jakarta vs Everybody through a sociolinguistic approach, addressing how such expressions reflect speakers’ psychological states and the broader social realities represented in the narrative. Employing a qualitative design with document analysis techniques, the data were collected from film dialogues containing swear words and subsequently classified based on categories of reference proposed by Wijana and Rohmadi (2006) and functional typology developed by Anderson and Trudgill (1992). The analysis identifies 48 instances of swear expressions encompassing six referential types, namely states, animals, body parts, activities, objects, and professions. Among these, state-related references appear most frequently, indicating their prominent use in negatively evaluating mental conditions or behavioral traits. In terms of function, three primary categories emerge: abusive, expletive, and humorous, with abusive function dominating the data. This predominance demonstrates that swear words are primarily utilized to attack, demean, and convey disapproval, while simultaneously constructing and reflecting the harshness of urban social realities depicted in the film.

Abstract

This study is situated within the growing need to integrate film-based media into literary learning by examining how semiotic signs and moral values are represented and pedagogically utilized. It addresses the research problem of how Roland Barthes’ semiotic elements—denotation, connotation, and myth—along with moral values are constructed in the film 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7 by Herwin Novianto and how these elements can be applied as teaching materials in senior high school. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, the study analyzes scenes and dialogues through observation and documentation techniques, using Barthes’ semiotic framework and Wicaksono’s moral value categories, including human relations with God, self, others, and the universe. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the film presents layered meanings through semiotic structures and conveys diverse moral values that are relevant to students’ social and emotional development. The study argues that these findings support the use of the film as an effective and contextual teaching resource for Grade XI students, particularly in learning critical response texts, as it enhances interpretive skills and moral awareness.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of animated video media on improving short story writing skills among eighth-grade students at Baitul Qur’an Integrated Islamic Junior High School, Tanjung Morawa, during the 2025–2026 academic year. The research was motivated by students’ limited ability to develop ideas, organize narrative structures, and express creativity in short story writing. The study addressed whether animated video media significantly influenced students’ writing performance. A quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design was implemented. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students, while the sample included an experimental class of 22 students and a control class of 20 students. Data were collected through short story writing tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using normality, homogeneity, t-test, and Scheffé test procedures. The findings revealed a substantial improvement in the experimental group after the implementation of animated video media, with the posttest mean score increasing to 87.42 compared to 71.45 in the control group. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the calculated t-value (15.33) exceeded the critical value (2.08), while the Scheffé test confirmed a significant effect with an F-value of 105.11 surpassing the critical value of 4.07. The study concludes that animated video media effectively enhances students’ short story writing skills by stimulating imagination, increasing engagement, and facilitating understanding of narrative structure and intrinsic literary elements.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning and narrative structure of the short story Serpihan yang Terbuang by Tin Miswary through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The research addresses how signs—icons, indices, and symbols—construct semiosis in representing traumatic experiences, memory, and collective history. The narrative centers on Amad Bh’eng, a scavenger who preserves ordinary objects as repositories of personal and social memory, including the loss of family and past life experiences. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, the study identifies icons through sensory representations such as visual imagery, sound, and smell; indices through causal relationships between objects and the character’s memories; and symbols through objects that embody emotional and historical meanings. The findings demonstrate that the story’s meaning emerges from the dynamic interaction between sign, object, and interpretant, whereby mundane objects function as powerful markers of life, trauma, and collective memory. This study contributes a novel perspective by applying Peirce’s semiotic framework to contemporary short fiction, an approach that remains relatively underexplored.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of students’ understanding of narrative authority on their ability to write descriptive texts among seventh-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Muallimin Universitas Al Washliyah Medan in the 2025–2026 academic year. The research is grounded in the limited pedagogical variation observed in classroom practices, where teachers tend to rely heavily on textbook-based instruction without adequately developing students’ narrative competence. The study addresses the question of whether enhancing students’ understanding of narrative authority significantly improves their descriptive writing skills. A quantitative experimental approach was employed using a two-group pretest-posttest design. From a population of 300 students, 60 were selected through random sampling and divided into experimental and control groups. Hypothesis testing was conducted using an independent samples t-test. The results indicate that the experimental group achieved a mean score of 61.5, while the control group obtained a mean of 43. The calculated t-value (2.851) exceeded the critical value, indicating a statistically significant effect. The findings demonstrate that a stronger understanding of narrative authority contributes positively to students’ descriptive writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic structure of phatic expressions across local languages in Indonesia, with particular emphasis on the Galela language and several regional dialects in North Maluku. The research addresses how phatic elements are structurally realized and function pragmatically in maintaining social interaction and cohesion among speakers. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through informal interviews, field notes, audio recordings, and systematic verification to ensure analytical reliability. The findings reveal that phatic expressions occur in the form of particles, single words, phrases, and clauses, with variations shaped by local cultural contexts and dialectal differences. Specific phatic particles such as bai, to, si, and ka function as semantic intensifiers, pragmatic softeners, and markers of social proximity within discourse. The study argues that the syntactic and pragmatic integration of phatic elements reflects broader socio-cultural norms embedded in language use. These results contribute to descriptive syntax and pragmatics while providing a foundation for the development of culturally responsive local language learning materials that promote effective and harmonious communication.
