Abstract

This study examines the reference and functions of swear words in the film Jakarta vs Everybody through a sociolinguistic approach, addressing how such expressions reflect speakers’ psychological states and the broader social realities represented in the narrative. Employing a qualitative design with document analysis techniques, the data were collected from film dialogues containing swear words and subsequently classified based on categories of reference proposed by Wijana and Rohmadi (2006) and functional typology developed by Anderson and Trudgill (1992). The analysis identifies 48 instances of swear expressions encompassing six referential types, namely states, animals, body parts, activities, objects, and professions. Among these, state-related references appear most frequently, indicating their prominent use in negatively evaluating mental conditions or behavioral traits. In terms of function, three primary categories emerge: abusive, expletive, and humorous, with abusive function dominating the data. This predominance demonstrates that swear words are primarily utilized to attack, demean, and convey disapproval, while simultaneously constructing and reflecting the harshness of urban social realities depicted in the film.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of students’ understanding of narrative authority on their ability to write descriptive texts among seventh-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Muallimin Universitas Al Washliyah Medan in the 2025–2026 academic year. The research is grounded in the limited pedagogical variation observed in classroom practices, where teachers tend to rely heavily on textbook-based instruction without adequately developing students’ narrative competence. The study addresses the question of whether enhancing students’ understanding of narrative authority significantly improves their descriptive writing skills. A quantitative experimental approach was employed using a two-group pretest-posttest design. From a population of 300 students, 60 were selected through random sampling and divided into experimental and control groups. Hypothesis testing was conducted using an independent samples t-test. The results indicate that the experimental group achieved a mean score of 61.5, while the control group obtained a mean of 43. The calculated t-value (2.851) exceeded the critical value, indicating a statistically significant effect. The findings demonstrate that a stronger understanding of narrative authority contributes positively to students’ descriptive writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent challenge of improving students’ narrative writing ability in Indonesian language learning by integrating audiovisual media into classroom practice. It investigates whether the use of the film Frozen (2013) significantly enhances the narrative writing skills of eighth-grade students at Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 5 Medan during the 2025–2026 academic year. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, the study compares students’ writing performance before and after the intervention, involving both control and experimental groups. The findings reveal a substantial improvement in the experimental group, which achieved a mean score of 78.63 compared to 49.15 in the control group, indicating that the film-based learning approach outperforms conventional methods. The results confirm a statistically significant effect of using Frozen (2013) as a learning medium on students’ narrative writing skills. This study argues that audiovisual media, particularly films, can effectively stimulate students’ imagination, engagement, and linguistic competence, thereby contributing to more innovative and effective Indonesian language instruction.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of modern music, particularly through both paid and free streaming platforms, has intensified scholarly interest in song lyrics as not merely entertainment but as complex linguistic artifacts embedded with semantic and contextual meanings. This study addresses the problem of how grammatical structures contribute to meaning construction in song lyrics, focusing on the question of how grammatical forms shape semantic interpretation in Hindia’s “Everything You Are.” Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Abdul Chaer’s grammatical theory (2013), data were collected through attentive listening and systematic note-taking of linguistic units, including words, phrases, and clauses. The data were subsequently classified into three primary morphological processes: affixation, reduplication, and composition. The findings reveal 13 distinct grammatical forms that demonstrate a rich interplay between structure and meaning, highlighting how grammatical processes function to intensify emotional nuance and ideological expression. The analysis shows that these linguistic features reinforce central themes of self-acceptance, unconditional love, and human existence. This study argues that grammatical-semantic analysis of song lyrics provides deeper insights into how language constructs meaning within socio-cultural contexts, positioning song lyrics as significant objects of linguistic inquiry.

Abstract

This study examines the lexical variation of the Kerinci language across Pulau Tengah, Benik, and Jujun Villages in Keliling Danau District, Kerinci Regency, in response to linguistic diversity shaped by geographical and socio-cultural dynamics. The research addresses the question of how lexical differences manifest among these speech communities and to what extent such differences indicate dialectal variation. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study utilizes 200 basic vocabulary items based on the Morris Swadesh list, with data collected through observation, interviews, elicitation, recording, and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed through transcription, identification, classification, and dialectometric calculation. The findings reveal that 36 out of 200 glosses exhibit lexical variation, indicating differences in form while maintaining similar meanings across the three villages. Dialectometric analysis shows a difference percentage of 16%, which falls within the “no significant difference” category (0%–20%). These results suggest that despite observable lexical variation, the Kerinci language in the three locations remains relatively homogeneous, influenced by close geographical proximity, social interaction, and shared cultural practices.

Abstract

The growing socio-economic inequalities in urban Indonesia have increasingly been reflected in contemporary literary works, positioning literature as a medium for articulating collective social consciousness. This study examines the short story Suara dari Jalanan by Azkiya (2025) through Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism, addressing how collective consciousness and worldview are constructed through the relationship between university students and marginalized communities in the context of economic injustice. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on literary text interpretation by examining human facts, collective subjects, meaningful structures, and worldview. The findings reveal that the narrative represents a form of social solidarity emerging as a collective response to rising living costs and structural inequality. The characters Arif and Mbah Marni symbolize a shared consciousness shaped by similar socio-economic experiences despite their differing backgrounds. This study argues that the short story functions not only as a fictional narrative but also as a critical reflection of urban social realities, demonstrating how literature articulates collective resistance and social awareness.
