The Journal of Linguistics and Language Teaching contains the research manuscripts related to the broad areas of Linguistics and English Language Teaching. Abstract

This study explores the TPACK of EFL teachers in two distinct school districts during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study comprised two English teachers from rural and urban schools in Bengkulu, Indonesia, with 2 to 10 years of experience teaching English. The researchers collected the data utilizing an interview-based comparative descriptive methodology to address research questions. Following the interview, the collected data was transcribed. The findings of this study indicate that urban teachers have a higher level of TPACK than rural teachers in terms of their ability to use technology and manage classes when teaching English during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly concerning online learning applications such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and the YouTube app. On the other hand, rural EFL teachers have insufficient TPACK. Due to a lack of time to design technology lesson plans, technology training, and inadequate supporting facilities and infrastructure, such as limited internet network availability and power outages, teachers lack knowledge of technological advances for online learning. Even though teachers in rural and urban areas had never utilized an online learning system during the previous school year, they had varying capacities for addressing problems that developed while utilizing this system.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the students’ reading comprehension by using the Know Want Learn (KWL) strategy. The objectives of this research were to investigate whether the integration of the Know Want Learn (KWL) strategy in the Zoom conference can improve the students’ reading comprehension and identify the students' perception of using the KWL Strategy in the Zoom conference. In this research, the researchers used classroom action research as the research design in collecting the data. The research was conducted in three cycles. The samples of this research were 30 students. The researchers employed questionnaire, observation and test for the data collecting technique. The test used in this research was reading test consisted of 25 questions. The researchers used descriptive analysis for analyzing the data. The findings of this research show that the integration of the Know Want Learn (KWL) strategy in the Zoom conference successful to improve students’ reading comprehension and reading activity. The improvement of students’ reading comprehension can be concluded from the mean score of the pre-test is 65.42 and the mean score of the post-test is 85.49. Moreover, there are 26% (8) students who show moderate perception, 24% (7) students offer positive perceptions, and 50% (15) students show very positive perceptions. Furthermore, the combination of KWL Strategy and Zoom conference can help students achieve the learning target. The students can get many benefits from using this combination to study English. They also can conduct an effective teaching-learning activity in a modern way even though they are not allowed to attend the face-to-face classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is find out how audio-visual aid can enhance students listening skills of EFL learners. From the observation, it was found that most students have bad scores in listening skills and low motivation in following listening materials. The researchers, then, employed the classroom action research method to fix the problem directly. This research was conducted in the English department of UIN FAS Bengkulu. The population used by the researchers was students in the third semester who got listening class. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, choosing the criteria or specific considerations so that they do not go through the selection process as done in a random technique. In this case, the researchers chose class 3b because it had the lowest grades and motivation among the other classes. Two cycles were done to handle the problem. The instrument used to gain the data by using a test, observation sheet, and interview. The data comparison from pre-assessment to final assessment shows a positive impact of the strategy on students' scores and motivation in the teaching-learning process of listening.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the application of emergency online learning during covid 19 in STKIP Media Nusantara Citra using the CIPP evaluation model. The Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model was formed to identify the evaluation result for the sake of program improvement. The descriptive qualitative study was used in this research. The subjects of this research were the Director of STKIP MNC, the head of the quality control board, the vice director of STKIP MNC, The lecturers, the academic staff, and the students of STKIP MNC. The study utilized several instruments to gather the data; document analysis, observational checklist, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study showed that in the context phase, the program was held based on a clear base: the Minister of Education and Culture letter No. 1 of 2020. In the input process. Moodle Learning Management system was the main component of delivering online learning. In the process stage, The Obstacles were internet networks and inadequate student-owned facilities, which are significant hurdles to the program's implementation. Moreover, the last phase, product evaluation, the use of LMS in online learning, eased the measurement of student participation in the program. However, the problems that appeared in the process evaluation must be the base of analysis in the future to ensure the sustainability of the hybrid learning program.

Abstract

Although the English lecturers have created an English syllabus since they started to teach English based on Higher Education Curriculum, it still needs to cover the needs of economic students. This research aimed: 1) to determine the needs of English learning materials (e.g., English skills, English sub-skills, and topic and themes), develop the learning objectives of communicative and WEB based-English syllabus, and 2) measure the eligibility of communicative and WEB-Based English syllabus for students of Economics. This research was designed as a developmental research that involved thirty-three economic students, four English lecturers, four alumni, and two stakeholders. This research data was gathered from a set questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The results of this research revealed that the students of Economics need integrated English language skills. Then, the communicative approach used in designing the communicative syllabus focuses on communication as the organizing principle for teaching rather than mastering the grammatical structure. Moreover, from the experts' perspective, the communicative and WEB Based English Syllabus eligibility was in a very good category (97.08%). Students could use this developed syllabus to improve their English proficiency. It could optimally solve the problems of a non-existent English course syllabus for economics students' qualification to compete for jobs, the global market, and the ASEAN Economics Community. In conclusion, economic students need English learning syllabus and materials related to their disciplines, and the developed communicative and WEB-based syllabus has been suitable for the economic students' needs in improving their English proficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the listening materials included in the English textbooks used by students in the tenth grade at SMAN 04 Bengkulu City match the requirements outlined in the curriculum that was implemented in 2013. This research is extremely important to the academic world since it will make it much easier for both students and teachers to select a good textbook. A content analysis was utilized in the current investigation. During the data collection process, the researchers utilized two different analysis matrices. The first matrix of analysis consisted of making connections between the listening materials in the textbook and the academic program for 2013. The second analysis matrix presents the percentage score that the English textbook was given in accordance with the standards of the 2013 curriculum. The first matrix illustrates, in accordance with the conclusions of the analysis of the data, that the listening materials contained within the English textbook is compatible with the curricular plan for 2013. In the second matrix, English textbooks are categorized as "good," much like in the first matrix. As a direct result of this, the textbooks published by Private Publications and Erlangga have an average percentage of 92%  (Good). In conclusion, the textbooks published by Private Publications/English Erlangga are regarded as "excellent" resources for use in education, both by students and by teachers.

Abstract

The focus of this research is a sociolinguistic examination of the impact of gender on language use. The primary goal of this research is to analyze the implications of men's and women's roles on their language usage. This research aims to highlight the variables that contribute to disparities in how gender impacts language use. This study's inquiry method is a questionnaire and audio-recoding. This study has shown differences in how men and women use language in our society and others like it. They use only some of the same forms; instead, they use different quantities or frequencies of the same form. In a society where gender plays a significant role, language is essential in contributing to that role. Gender roles, men's and women's identities, the hierarchical nature of gender relations, and men's dominance are all factors that contribute to differences in language use. Gender differentiation does not exist in a vacuum; it interacts with other types of social differentiation in a complex way. Language and gender, on the other hand, are formed through participation in everyday social activities. In conclusion, gender and language are inextricably linked.

Abstract

The era of globalization has required humans to utilize international language as a means of communication. Many educational institutions implement a bilingual program, such as the one implemented by MA Syaikh Zainuddin NW Anjani. The purpose of this study is to analyze the challenges of students in the bilingual program. Data collection techniques in this study include observation, interviews, and documentation. Observations were used to observe the process of implementing the bilingual program at MA Syaikh Zainuddin NW Anjani. Interviews were used to obtain information on the development of the bilingual program. The analysis in this study uses descriptive qualitative. The study results indicate that the challenge of students in the Bilingual program at MA Syaikh Zainuddin NW Anjani begins with applying two languages. It is done by introducing what language is. After the introduction stage, the students are asked to memorize the vocabulary given, with the aim that students can interact using the two languages, but based on the results of research in the field, many students have difficulty memorizing vocabulary because of the density of the hours of this subject causes problems for students. However, the teachers motivate students to keep learning the language to facilitate learning.

Abstract

A primary objective of the study was to explore students' difficulties in reading comprehension through online learning using Google Classroom and Zoom meetings faced by eighth-grade students at SMP Persatuan Pedamaran OKI regency. This study used a descriptive qualitative method; the participants were all eighth-grade students at SMP Persatuan Pedamaran. The data was gathered using a reading comprehension test and questionnaires. The test indicated that 77.5 percent of students struggled with the text's main idea. Then, 72.78 percent of students had a problem with the text's generic structure, and 75.83 percent had difficulty with references. Next, 73.75 percent of students had problems with the moral value of the text. Following that, 72.25 percent of students had difficulties understanding the text's details. Finally, 73.25 percent of students needed help finding the meaning of vocabulary in the text. Further, based on the questionnaires, it was found that the problems in learning reading comprehension online focused on several factors: students' background, social situation, school scene, and teacher's teaching strategy. In conclusion, many students in SMP Persatuan Pedamaran found it hard to read the texts comprehensively, especially in online learning.

Abstract

Writing is one of the essential things that all students must do. In writing, the delivery of ideas needs to be arranged so that the writing is easy to understand and practical. One type of writing is when students write a research article for their final project or thesis. Abstract writing is one of the crucial sections of a final project or thesis because the abstract contains an outline of the research they did. In writing abstracts, metadiscourse markers were possible because they aimed to organize a sequence of ideas, attract readers' attention, and indicate how important the information was presented. This study investigated one hundred and twenty abstract theses from six study programs at Universitas Qomaruddin. They are English Department (PBI), Mathematic Department (PMT), Industrial Engineering (TI), Electrical Engineering (TE), Mechanical Engineering (MS), and Informatics Engineering (IF). Hyland (2005) formulated the interactional metadiscourse investigated as the primary reference. The results showed that all six study programs applied interactional metadiscourse markers when writing their abstracts. Moredespite different styles and preferences in applying markers. In terms of usage of overall metadiscourse, PBI applied the most markers, while MS applied the least. In terms of variants of metadiscourse, PBI also applied the most, and MS applied the least varied markers. The reasons behind more or less usage of interactional markers were influenced by how familiar they were with using English, as it also revealed their writing style. PBI is one example that their exposure to English pretty helps them vary the way they arrange their ideas in their abstracts. However, other surprising groups were PMT  and IF groups, which frequently showed the uses of metadiscourse markers. It also strengthened that English was not only dominated by English department students. It was more on how this language was known to many students at Universitas Qomaruddin. It is hoped that English as one of the international languages is no longer a big problem for students, especially in the case of abstract writing.
