Abstract

This study examines the effect of the Inaportnet system on ship agency services at PT. Maritel Bahtera Abadi in Balikpapan. Inaportnet is Indonesia's integrated electronic port clearance platform, mandated by Ministry of Transportation Regulation No. 192/2015, designed to streamline vessel arrival and departure documentation. Using a quantitative approach with survey data from 51 respondents comprising shipping agents, port authority staff, and stevedoring company employees at KSOP Class I Balikpapan, the study employs Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, and coefficient of determination analysis through SPSS 25.0. The results show a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.472) between Inaportnet implementation and ship agency service quality, with the system explaining 53.4% of the variance in service quality (R² = 0.534). The t-test confirms the relationship is statistically significant (t = 3.750, p = 0.000 < 0.05). However, the study also documents operational challenges including 37 system error incidents across 179 vessel visits during the observation period, seven maintenance shutdowns, and persistent gaps between target and actual approval processing times. The findings suggest that while Inaportnet has a significant positive effect on agency services, system reliability issues and the continued requirement for face-to-face approval at KSOP Balikpapan limit its full potential.

Abstract

This study examines customer loyalty retention strategies at PT. Transuta Lintas Samudera's Banten Branch amid intensifying competition among 179 shipping agency companies operating in the Merak-Banten port area. Using a quantitative SWOT approach with data from 30 respondents and company operational records from August 2021 to July 2022, the study constructs weighted factor analysis matrices, a strategic position map, and a Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) to identify and rank strategic alternatives. The internal analysis yields a weighted score of 2.87, while the external analysis produces 2.93, positioning the company in the Growth quadrant of the strategic position map. The QSPM ranking identifies intensifying promotional activities through online and offline channels as the highest-priority strategy (TAS = 6.35), followed by offering flexible pricing adjusted to customer workload capacity (TAS = 5.92). The study documents that the company met its monthly vessel target of 10 ships in only 1 of 24 months during the observation period, confirming that marketing restructuring is the most urgent intervention.

Abstract

Field trips are a teaching method carried out by taking cadets to a specific location or site outside the classroom. For example, the field trip aboard the KNL MH Thamrin is a practical learning activity aimed at studying and observing all of the ship’s equipment and machinery firsthand, while also providing an introduction (familiarization) to life aboard a ship in preparation for the maritime work practice (Prala) in the 5th and 6th semesters. Prala provides cadets with the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired on campus, demonstrating the relevance between the theory learned during lectures and practical application. Additionally, Prala helps strengthen collaborative relationships between the university and shipping companies. It can also serve as a promotional tool for the institution with potential employers. Complaints from shipping companies regarding cadets’ readiness during their sea training, coupled with the suboptimal implementation of the Field Trip for engineering cadets at KNL MH Thamrin each semester, form the core issues addressed in this study. The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the engineering department’s student field trips and the readiness of engineering students during their sea training, as well as the extent of this influence. A quantitative research method was employed, utilizing a questionnaire distributed to 70 third-semester cadets in the Engineering Department who had already completed their field trips. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS version 27.0.1, and the interpretation of the results serves as evaluation material and feedback for STIP to enhance cadet readiness in preparation for their sea training.

Abstract

Loading operations on chemical tankers require precise time estimation to ensure port efficiency and operational safety. This study aims to formulate and validate a mathematical model for calculating the Estimated Loading Time (ELT) of Caustic Soda (NaOH 50% solution) on MT AKRA 102, a chemical/oil product tanker with a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 5,692 metric tons. The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach incorporating cargo density conversion (ρ ≈ 1.515 t/m³), shore pumping transfer rates, and standardized operational safety margins—comprising initial slow-rate loading, topping-off sequences, and inspection allowances. Three loading scenarios with pumping rates of 150, 250, and 350 MT/hour were simulated for a cargo quantity of 4,500 MT, yielding total estimated loading times of 33.00, 21.00, and 15.86 hours, respectively. Validation against actual field data demonstrated that the model achieves discrepancies within acceptable operational thresholds, confirming its reliability for pre-voyage loading time planning. The findings contribute practical tools for port clearance scheduling and chemical tanker operational efficiency.

Abstract

Ethylene is a cryogenic liquefied gas cargo transported at approximately −104°C, requiring specialized handling procedures that significantly influence tanker berthing duration at loading terminals. Accurate estimation of berthing time is essential for terminal scheduling, berth utilization optimization, and operational cost management. This study aims to calculate the estimated tanker berthing time based on the amount of ethylene loaded by developing a predictive regression model. Data were collected from 20 ethylene carrier calls at a petrochemical terminal over a two-year period (2022–2023), comprising records of cargo volume (Metric Tons), loading rate (MT/hour), cool-down time, and total berthing time extracted from Statement of Facts (SoF) documents. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed with berthing time (Y) as the dependent variable and cargo volume (X₁) and loading rate (X₂) as independent variables. The results show that cargo volume and loading rate jointly explain 94.7% of the variance in berthing time (R² = 0.947, Adjusted R² = 0.941). The regression model Y = 5.832 + 0.00384X₁ − 0.0267X₂ indicates that each additional Metric Ton of ethylene increases berthing time by approximately 0.23 minutes, while higher loading rates reduce berthing time. The F-test confirms model significance (F = 152.34, p < 0.001), and both independent variables are individually significant (p < 0.05). The model provides a practical tool for terminal planners and ship agents to estimate berthing duration and improve berth allocation efficiency.

Abstract

This study investigates the potential deployment of mini wind turbines at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran (STIP) Jakarta as an alternative renewable electrical energy source. Situated along the northern coastal zone of Marunda, Jakarta, the campus is geographically positioned in a corridor with consistent coastal wind exposure, presenting a viable opportunity for small-scale wind energy harvesting. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach through an exploratory case study design. Data were collected using in-depth interviews with campus leadership, engineering faculty, campus electricians, and cadets, complemented by structured field observations and secondary document analysis covering historical wind speed records from BMKG, campus electricity consumption data, and institutional master plans. Data trustworthiness was ensured through source triangulation and method triangulation. The findings were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results indicate that STIP Jakarta possesses favorable site conditions including open rooftop areas and coastal wind corridors, adequate electrical grid infrastructure for on-grid or off-grid integration, and strong institutional policy alignment through its green campus commitment. However, technical challenges related to marine corrosion, structural load-bearing capacity, and personnel readiness for routine maintenance require targeted mitigation. The study concludes that mini wind turbines hold significant potential as both a supplementary renewable energy source and an educational laboratory facility for maritime cadets, provided that structured implementation planning and capacity-building measures are adopted.

Abstract

Banten Province has three major ports, namely Cigading Port (CDG), Ciwandan Port (CDW), and Merak Mas Port (MN), which serve as the backbone of national sea transportation in the western Java region. The enactment of Law No. 17 of 2008 on Shipping has separated the regulatory and operational functions of ports, creating opportunities for both state-owned and private enterprises to compete in ship agency services. This study aims to analyze the competitive landscape of ship agency services at Banten ports in supporting national sea transportation activities. A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentary analysis as data collection techniques. The GE-McKinsey Matrix was applied to evaluate industry attractiveness and business strength across the three ports. The findings reveal that CDG Port occupies a HIGH–HIGH position in the GE Matrix with an Industry Attractiveness Index of 95.0 and a Business Strength Index of 80.0, indicating a dominant competitive position. CDW Port is positioned at HIGH–MEDIUM (IA: 57.5, BS: 75.0), while MN Port occupies a LOW–LOW position (IA: 17.5, BS: 20.0). These results indicate that ship agency services at Banten ports exhibit significant competitive disparity, influenced by factors such as market share, facilities, location, brand recognition, and regulatory environment. Strategic recommendations are provided for each port to enhance their respective competitive positions in supporting national sea transportation.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of crankshaft reconditioning (regrinding/undersizing) on the lubricating oil temperature rise (ΔT) of Auxiliary Engine No. 1 aboard MT. Senipah. A quantitative descriptive field case study approach was employed, comparing thermal performance data before and after the reconditioning process under three load scenarios: 50%, 75%, and 85–90%. Primary data were collected through onboard measurements of lube oil inlet/outlet temperatures, bearing clearances, crankshaft deflection, and journal surface roughness. Secondary data were obtained from the Engine Log Book, workshop reconditioning reports, and manufacturer specifications. Post-reconditioning running tests revealed that the lubricating oil temperature differential (ΔT) remained within the manufacturer’s acceptable limit of 10–12°C across all load conditions, with outlet temperatures consistently below the 75°C normal threshold. The frictional heat generation analysis confirmed that proper clearance restoration and adequate surface finish reduced hydrodynamic friction to within design parameters. A Fishbone (Ishikawa) root cause analysis identified four contributing factor categories—Man, Machine, Material, and Method—to potential post-reconditioning overheating. The study concludes that properly executed crankshaft reconditioning effectively restores thermal stability in the lube oil system, provided that bearing clearances conform to the maker’s undersize chart and a controlled running-in procedure is followed.

Abstract

Dumai Port is an important port in Riau, which supports Riau's economy. PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia I Dumai Branch is a branch of PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia I Medan, a company engaged in port services. This study aims to find out whether there is an influence of domestic and foreign ship services on the income of PT. Port of Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1 Dumai branch and find out how much the number of domestic and foreign ship services contributes to the revenue of PT. Port of Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1 Dumai Branch. This study uses a quantitative research methodology, a data analysis tool using simple linear regression with the application of SPSS. The results of the study show that based on the calculation of simple linear regression, it can be seen that the correlation level of 0.875 or 87.5% means that the influence of the number of ship services on the revenue of PT. The Port of Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1 Dumai branch is very strong, and the degree of coefficient relationship of 0.70 – 0.90 is a medium relationship or a moderate influence. Based on the calculation of the determination coefficient (R2), it was found that the results obtained a value (R2) of 0.766 or 76.6%, meaning that the ship service variable was able to provide an influence with a contribution of 76.6% to the revenue of PT. Abstract

AIS stands for Automatic Identification System, which is a system that can provide automatic information about the data of a ship to another ship with a certain distance, how to operate AIS. The purpose of this research is to optimize the operation of AIS (Automatic Identification System) in an effort to maintain shipping safety on MV. Red Dahlia. This study uses a Mix Method approach with data collection methods using questionnaires, direct observation in the field, unstructured interviews and documentation. The results of the study show that AIS works using a very high frequency (VHF), which is between 156 – 162 MHz. By knowing the operation of the functions of navigation tools, it is very important, especially knowing the buttons contained in the AIS and their respective functions so that they can avoid the danger of collision with other ships or that can endanger navigation. From the results of the questionnaire, it was obtained that the average results of optimizing AIS operations to maintain sailing safety were 75.91% who said they strongly agreed, 17.27% said they agreed, and only 6.82% said they disagreed.
