Abstract

Nickel Ore cargo is a cargo that requires special handling starting from checking before being loaded onto the ship and still on the barge, during the loading process, to its maintenance in the hatch during the ship's voyage. For this reason, attention is needed so as not to pose a danger to shipping safety. This study aims to find out things that can still be improved in the handling of nickel cargo in MV. Lumoso Raya so that important recommendations were obtained for ship safety. The research methods used are qualitative through direct observation in the field, interviews with related parties, literature studies, and documentation. The data obtained is then analyzed and presented in the form of a descriptive narrative. The results of the study show that there are still obstacles in handling nickel cargo before the loading process, namely the lack of understanding of the crew, and differences of opinion between the Officer On Watch or the guard officer and the shipper. The researcher proposed that familiarization is still needed to improve the knowledge of the crew, as well as an explanation of the Lumoso Circular no. 5/10/2017 owned by the company PT. Lumoso Pratama Line which is a guide for operational procedures on ships in loading nickel so that the process of loading nickel becomes more optimal and also guarantees the safety of ships in sailing

Abstract

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is one of the most actively developed energy resources due to its efficiency, relatively clean combustion characteristics, and suitability for large-scale transportation. LNG is produced by cooling natural gas to cryogenic temperatures of approximately −160°C (−260°F) at atmospheric pressure, converting it into a clear, colourless, and non-toxic liquid. The liquefaction process significantly reduces the volume of natural gas, achieving a volume reduction ratio of approximately 1:600, thereby improving the efficiency of LNG storage and transportation. The primary component of LNG is methane, with smaller proportions of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, and nitrogen. Despite its advantages as an energy source, LNG is classified as a hazardous cargo under international maritime regulations and requires specialised knowledge, technical competence, and strict operational procedures during handling and transportation. LNG carriers and Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) are designed according to stringent safety requirements, including the standards established by the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). This study aims to analyse LNG cargo loading operations on board PGN FSRU Lampung and identify measures to prevent operational failures and shipboard accidents during the ship-to-ship cargo transfer process. A qualitative descriptive research approach was employed, incorporating observations, interviews, and documentation analysis to evaluate cargo handling procedures, tank pressure management, and the utilisation of LNG control systems. The findings indicate that maintaining safe and efficient LNG loading operations requires optimal management of cargo tank pressure through effective utilisation of available control systems, particularly the Gas Combustion Unit (GCU) and Boil-Off Gas (BOG) recondenser. Insufficient utilisation of these systems may lead to ineffective pressure control, operational delays, and increased safety risks during cargo transfer activities. The study concludes that improving crew competency, strengthening adherence to LNG cargo handling procedures, and optimising the operation of pressure management equipment are essential to ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable ship-to-ship LNG transfer operations. The results provide valuable recommendations for improving LNG cargo management practices and reducing the risk of accidents during FSRU operations.

Abstract

The safety of shipping at sea is also very important in the maritime world. Disturbances when the ship sails are mostly due to natural factors, but it is possible that it can be caused by factors from the ship itself (engine damage). Any disruption at the time of sailing is an emergency as it will slow the ship down to arrive on time. Prevention of emergencies that have been determined in accordance with SOLAS and SOPs is very important. Although rules and conditions have been set that must be implemented by ships with emergency training procedures and procedures, it is evident that in reality there are still problems or lack of implementation of emergency exercises on board. to discuss how safety exercises on ships are implemented based on the provisions of SOLAS and SOP on board with the aim that in the implementation of the exercise can be useful during the actual incident, so that the souls of the crew, ship and the environment can be saved. But in fact, emergency exercises are not implemented optimally. The research approach used is qualitative descriptive through observation, interview, and documentation data collection techniques. The results of this study show that emergency training does not run optimally because there are several factors, namely, the non-routine of emergency exercises in accordance with SOLAS and SOPs on board, the unavailability of spare safety equipment during emergency exercises, and the lack of discipline of the crew when carrying out emergency exercises.

Abstract

One of the cargoes transported using sea transportation services is oil cargo. To meet the needs of transporting oil cargoes, an innovative ship was created that can transport types of oil cargo, namely tankers. Tankers are a type of ship that has been designed to be able to transport various types of oil, chemical liquids to liquids. Systematic and correct tank cleaning methods include planning and preparation, implementation and evaluation. There are still remnants of tank cleaning in the cargo tank and there are still dangerous toxic gases in the cargo tank that exceed the ideal for H2S 0.1% and for CO 0.1%. Then for the level of O2 gas in the tank to be less than 21% (the ideal O2 is 21%) causes the tank cleaning process on board the ship to take too long. Resulting in losses for the company because the company received a fine sanction by the charterer. The purpose of the research is to improve the smoothness and find solutions because of the long tank cleaning process. This research is a type of research with a qualitative descriptive method.
