Abstract

The reality of climate change and other environmental crises calls for a cooperative effort to ensure a more effective effort toward environmental sustainability. Buddhist environmental ethics sets an interesting departure to talk about environmental awareness because of its attention toward all living beings. However, there are critics accusing Buddhist environmental awareness of being too biocentric and ignorant to the socio-political aspect of environmental ethics. This article will give another perspective on Buddhist environmental ethics, by incorporating an onto-epistemological paradigm constructed by Karen Barad, which she calls Agential Realism. Further exploration on Buddhist environmental ethics from the Agential Realist perspective shows that the incorporation of multiple aspects in environmental struggle is possible, and even necessary.

Abstract

The paradigm of world religions strongly influences insights about religion in Indonesia. The world's religious paradigm has placed indigenous people in discrimination, and they have difficulty carrying out the religious practices they have been doing for generations. This paper is a critical study of previous studies on the Karampuang Indigenous people, who still view traditions, community and nature relations, and local wisdom through the paradigms of world religions. This article will be examined through a traditional religious approach. This article aims to explain the relationship between the Karampuang Indigenous people and nature, the ecological wisdom of the Karampuang Indigenous people in preserving nature, and the traditions of the Indigenous people in maintaining this ecological wisdom. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through interviews with key informants supported by the literature. First, it was found that the Karampuang Indigenous people see nature as a subject or person. This relationship is interpreted as Mapakalebbi Ale Hanua (respect for nature. Relationships are built because of the awareness that humans are integral to the forest itself. Second, ecological wisdom in the Karampuang community is passed down from generation to generation through Paseng (messages) of indigenous through Lontara and oral speech such as Makkamase Ale (loving the forest), Mappakatuo Ale (humanizing the forest) and Tuo Kamase-mase (living equal and in harmony with nature). Rituals of the Mappogau Sihanua are a reminder of the importance of preserving nature.

Abstract

Since ancient times, Yawa Unat have indigenous community revered the land as Mother. The land is a precious and vital resource for indigenous peoples. Nevertheless, the area considered sacred has a very significant economic worth for survival. Realizing that they had lost their land rights and their relationship with the land during the preceding decade, the Yawa Unat sold the land. The land is not simply a mother whose womb gives birth to and enriches the lives of the Yawa Unat Tribe's people. So far, study on Yawa Unat has focused mostly on the economic and religious significance of land as mom. Consequently, the struggle of the Yawa Unat tribe to defend their land is viewed as concentrated solely on their own interests. Furthermore, in this research, utilizing Carolyn Merhant's feminist approach, we suggest that land as a mother has a significant value for the balance of the ecosystem of life for both Yawa Unat and the people of Papua and the natural world of Papua holistically. Therefore, the ethical aspect of Yawa Unat's battle has a significant global impact on the human-nature interaction in Papua. Lastly, this research is limited to ethical considerations and does not yet address features of local religious politics and religious liberty that are crucial to this topic.

Abstract

Man, on the one hand, is understood as a creation on earth, like all earthly things, and on the other hand, a man appears on earth and seeks to reach a higher life. Higher life here is a level of life that has a higher quality in a more transcendental sense compared to everyday life in this world. Humans can thus be understood in essence or human existence along with the activities and characteristics attached to it. So that in this context there are various mentions for humans because they have complex natures. But it is also necessary to explore human reality based on the ontological elements of the human being to answer the question of whether humans are formed from one element, two, or even plural. So this study aims to explore ontologically human nature from the view of Svami Vivekananda. This study uses a qualitative method with a philosophical hermeneutic approach. The results of this study indicate that Vivekananda views humans as essentially the same as Brahman, in the sense that humans are existentially different from Brahman but are essentially the same as Brahman. Vivekananda describes the body as the name of a series of changes. This is understandable because the body is always changing and is composed of changing particles. The real man is the soul, not the body. This explanation also seems to be a form of direct rejection of materialism. And man has the divine nature of God.
