Abstract

Religious conversion is a problematic phenomenon. It is supported based on religious freedom, but opposed based on religious doctrines and truth claims. The debate on religious conversion in relation to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) tends to stop on the dichotomy of universalism and relativism of human rights. That is, religious conversion is recognized as a universal value, but in a particular context became relative. In this perspective, the implementation of religious conversion, which should be universal, becomes limited. As a result, there are various kinds of stigmatization against the subjects of religious conversion, for instance, they are labeled as "heretics", "infidels", "apostates", and even "dissidents" against religion. Therefore, to explain religious conversion in relation to religious freedom and human rights, I do not stop at the dichotomy of universalism and relativism of human rights. However, religious conversion needs to be analyzed as part of the freedom of religion whose subjects must be protected. This paper will analyze the issue of religious conversion in two perspectives: first, how religious conversion (in and out conversion) in religious doctrines and teachings; and, second, how to understand religious conversion in the discourse of freedom of religion which is closely intertwined with human rights. The method used in this paper is a combination of interviews and literature study. The findings in this research show that freedom of religion is often constrained by religion itself (so-called religious relativism)

Abstract

Abstract The death ceremony carried out by Hindu Kaharinngan in Katingan Hilir consists of the stages of the burial ceremony: Tiwah and Ngalangkang Pambak. This ceremony is a mandatory follow-up after the Tiwah, but in reality, Ngalangkang Pambak is no longer held after the ceremony. This ceremony is even carried out as an annual ritual or to commemorate certain events. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The type of data for this research is primary data sourced from informants and secondary data sourced from supporting data. Data collection methods include observation, interviews, recording, and documentation studies. Data analysis and interpretation procedures in research using a "ground-up" approach. The result of this research, Ngalangkang Pambak is part of a series of Tiwah ceremonies. However, in its development, Ngalangkang Pambka turned into an annual tradition. Ngalangkang Pambak is an event of thanksgiving for the prosperity, good fortune, and health that have been given by the ancestors by cleaning the Pambak or the graves of deceased relatives (ancestors). Ngalangkang Pambak is also means of paying for one's wishes because all requests, whether in the form of work or achievements specifically requested from the ancestors, have all been achieved. The Ngalangkang Pambak ritual creates a feeling of joy and makes life more relaxed and enjoyable, bringing joy to the family that has carried it out because this ritual also means that the family is considered capable of carrying out a form of devotion to their ancestors.

Abstract

The values contained in the mamapas lewu tradition include willingness to sacrifice, mutual cooperation, respect for God, mutual cooperation, expression of gratitude, self-purification, self-control, eliminating envy, envy and revenge and loyalty to promises. In context, other tribes may just be making small talk as an effort to bring closer relations with others. But the Dayak people need free space to express their culture and traditions. In other words, the Dayak tribe needs traditions to create space for others. If we look closely, each tribe has a different perception of seeing the same reality regarding the placement of themselves towards other people. Dayak people tend to distance themselves and withdraw, while other tribes tend to eliminate distance at the level of social relations. In this way, eating lewu can eliminate social distance between people in society. The aim of the tolerance values contained in the mamapas lewu tradition is that people adapt to a heterogeneous environment and can adapt and relativize their own views on ethnicity and religion, thereby giving space to others. In this way, mamapas lewu can be interpreted as restoring balance between humans and nature, fellow humans and humans with God.

Abstract

Abstract The problem of waste after Hindu ceremonies in Bali has been highlighted. This made PC KMHDI Denpasar create a work program called "Biopori Installation Movement for Temples in Denpasar" (GEMPAR). Based on these problems, this research tries to examine more holistically the essence of the presence of GEMPAR as a work program based on Hindu Ecotheology. In order to support the purpose of this research, 3 problem formulations were formulated, including: 1) The nature of biopori as an environmentally friendly technology, 2) Tri Hita Karana as a Hindu Ecotheology guideline, and 3) The essence of the GEMPAR is a form of Hindu Ecotheology program from KMHDI. Through a qualitative type of research method that uses a case study approach, the results of this study describe the results and discussion that: 1) Biopori is an innovative technology that can play a role in ceremonial waste management in the temple environment. 2) Tri Hita Karana is a Hindu Ecotheology guideline that acts as a reference in maintaining harmony between humans with God, humans with fellow humans, and humans with the surrounding environment. 3) GEMPAR is a form of Hindu Ecotheology program from KMHDI which has useful implications for preserving nature and its contents.

Abstract

Human rights violations against women and children in Indonesia's Freedom of Religion and Belief (FoRB) are visible in public spaces. This article focuses on cases that often occur in multicultural societies. This article aims to identify, discuss, and comment on human rights violations in the religious form prohibitions and coercion in public schools, which impact the development of identity politics in Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative multiple-case study that will discuss and compare several cases of human rights violations in children's religious clothing in public schools using online media and a review of regulatory literature as a data source. The results of this research show four findings namely first, forced use of religious clothing occurs in Muslim-majority areas. Meanwhile, the prohibition on wearing religious clothing occurs in non-Muslim majority areas. Second, religious legislation for educational institutions in certain areas is still based on the most relevant religious regions. Third, the contest of burning clothing has an impact on the victim's psychological, physical, and relational disorders. Fourth, cultural contestation is a means of perpetuating identity politics and targeting vulnerable groups such as women and children. Thus, the state has a big task to guarantee religious freedom in vulnerable spaces.

Abstract

Research on compulsory religious education policies in Indonesia, criticized for their normative and pedagogically lacking nature, primarily functions as religious instruction due to their mono-religious focus (Bagir: 2011, Suhadi et al.: 2013, Yusuf and Sterkens: 2016). Consequently, the existing religious education model in Indonesia falls short in fostering tolerance and mutual respect among students of diverse faiths, particularly within the school setting. The mono-religious approach not only presents pedagogical challenges but also hinders the development of dialogue between teachers and students of differing beliefs. This paper attempts to narrate teachers' experiences in teaching religious education to students of various religions, utilizing qualitative methods such as literature review and interviews. The study focuses on Christian religion teachers at SMAK BPK PENABUR Jakarta. The findings reveal that teachers face challenges in bridging knowledge gaps between themselves and students, prompting the need for negotiation and transformation of the religious education classroom into an interreligious education space, fostering dialogue between teachers and students of different faiths.

Abstract

The arrival of Rohingya Muslim refugees in coastal Aceh led to a rejection response from the local community. Resistance is not necessarily present but the result of accumulated experiences and negative contacts built between local communities and previous refugees. In line with that, this article aims to map the resistance that is present in the frame of digital media. More specifically, this article wants to explain about: 1) the forms of resistance present in the framing of online news media, 2) the forms of resistance found in social media, and 3) the controversy between the community and pro Rohingya organizations. In order to obtain the desired data, this article uses internet studies and a descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that resistance in online news framing is divided into three forms, namely news that broadcasts community resistance in the form of demonstrations, expulsion of Rohingya boats, to anarchist actions and evictions at refugee camps. In the realm of social media, recorded resistance develops into a universal issue that is produced and reproduced. The resistance manifested in feed posts, video reels content, and discourse in comments gradually shifted into expressions of hatred towards Rohingya refugees. The rejection continues to pressure international and national institutions for the expulsion of Rohingya refugees. Thus, it is necessary to socialize digital literacy and strengthen the values of diversity in the community in order to build awareness in the wise use of social media.
