Abstract

This research addresses a persistent conceptual gap in the fields of Qur'anic exegesis (tafsīr) and Islamic legal theory, namely the overlap and lack of systematic distinction between maqāṣid al-Qur'ān (the objectives of the Qur'an) and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah (the objectives of Islamic law). Although both concepts are increasingly referenced in contemporary Islamic discourse—alongside the development of tafsīr maqāṣidī (purpose-based exegesis)—the theoretical boundaries, developmental genealogy, and methodological relationship between the two remain under-theorized in existing literature. This study presents a novel analytical comparison by examining both frameworks through six dimensions: definition, source, methodological approach, historical development, axiology, and operational function. Through a comparative-analytical qualitative study of classical and contemporary sources, this paper demonstrates that the relationship between the two is one of absolute generality and specificity (al-‘umūm wa al-khuṣūṣ al-muṭlaq), wherein every maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah is encompassed within the maqāṣid al-Qur’ān, but the reverse is not true. Furthermore, this research clarifies that tafsīr maqāṣidī functions as an interpretive tool (wasīlah) to uncover maqāṣid al-Qur’ān, particularly at the thematic, verse, and surah levels. By proposing this clearer typology and hierarchical model, this research contributes to a more precise and methodologically grounded application in Qur'anic interpretation, Islamic legal theory, and contemporary ijtihād.

Abstract

Abstract : Environmental sustainability challenges are intensifying alongside climate change, while Generation Z constitutes Indonesia’s largest and most strategic demographic group, making their sustainable behavior vital for national development. This study aimed to develop and validate a contextually relevant Sustainable Behavior Scale for Indonesian Generation Z. Using a quantitative psychometric approach, data were collected from 486 respondents aged 16–28 years. Scale development was grounded in Corral Verdugo’s multidimensional framework and examined using Exploratory Factor Analysis with minimum residual extraction and oblimin rotation. The analysis demonstrated adequate sampling adequacy (KMO = 0.781) and a significant Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity (p .001). A five-factor structure consisting of 19 items emerged, explaining 45.8% of the total variance. These factors represent behavioral dimensions of sustainable behavior in everyday life rather than causal determinants, including pro-ecological daily practices, resource conservation behavior, social responsibility and collective sustainability, fairness and intergenerational concern, and responsible consumption and lifestyle choices. The measurement model showed good fit (RMSEA = 0.049; TLI = 0.909) and acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.717). This study offers one of the first empirically validated multidimensional sustainable behavior scales tailored to Indonesian Generation Z, providing a robust instrument for future research.

Abstract

The persistent moral decline in contemporary education underscores the inadequacy of existing pedagogical frameworks and the need for innovative alternatives. This study explores Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s philosophy of education as a novel paradigm for moral renewal, focusing on integrating ethical and spiritual values as the foundation of character formation. Using a qualitative conceptual design through a systematic literature review of Nasr’s seminal works and relevant educational theories, the study identifies his holistic framework which harmonizes intellectual, emotional, and spiritual dimensions as a robust basis for moral education. The findings demonstrate that Nasr’s philosophy advances both theoretical discourse and provides practical insights for curriculum development, teacher training, and policy formulation. By bridging classical Islamic intellectual traditions with contemporary challenges, this study offers a contextually relevant and theoretically grounded model addressing the ethical and spiritual deficits of modern education, promoting learners who are ethically responsible, spiritually aware, and intellectually prepared for today’s complex society.

Abstract

This study addresses ongoing debates in feminist Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia, focusing on epistemological ambiguities in classifying verses on gender relations. It aims to critically compare the interpretive methodologies of Musdah Mulia and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir, two influential scholars representing different feminist hermeneutical approaches. Employing qualitative library research with a critical-comparative and epistemological framework, this study analyzes their main works and relevant supporting literature. The findings show that Musdah Mulia promotes a humanist-feminist interpretation that prioritizes gender justice and equality as the Qur’an’s primary ethical horizon. Although effective in challenging patriarchal interpretations, this approach raises epistemological issues due to its reliance on external ethical standards to distinguish normative from historical verses. Conversely, Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir’s Qirā’ah Mubādalah treats all verses as normative through the reconstruction of reciprocal gender relations, offering greater structural consistency but creating tension between textual fidelity and hermeneutical reconstruction based on mutual ethics. This study concludes that both approaches reflect a fundamental structural problem in feminist Qur’anic interpretation: the absence of a coherent Qur’anic theoretical framework integrating ethics, textual authority, and methodology. It recommends the development of an integrative interpretive model grounded in internal Qur’anic epistemology to strengthen future feminist exegesis.

Abstract

This article examines the distinctive Islamic thought of Buya Ahmad Syafii Maarif, a prominent Indonesian Muslim intellectual whose ideas integrate morality, nationalism, and humanity. Unlike political interpretations of Islamism, Buya Syafii emphasized a moral-ethical framework of Islam as the foundation for responding to radicalism, identity politics, and moral decline. Using a qualitative library research method, this study analyzes his major works, writings of his disciples, and relevant literature. The findings show that Buya Syafii consistently placed morality at the core of Islamic interpretation, rejecting religious symbolism devoid of substance, and strongly criticizing transnational radicalism that threatens Indonesian unity. His intellectual contribution lies in positioning Islam not only as a personal faith but also as a moral force that upholds justice, inclusivity, and solidarity. Concretely, he integrated Qur’anic ethics with the spirit of Indonesian nationalism and universal human values, offering a model of “moral Islam” that resists exclusivism and violence. Theoretically, this study contributes by mapping Buya Syafii’s thought as a framework of moral Islam in contemporary Indonesian discourse. Practically, it proposes the internalization of these values in education, public debate, and religious movements to strengthen an inclusive and humane Indonesian Islam.
