Abstract

This study aims an analysis of the student's command of vocabulary. The method used to conduct this study was qualitative design. The data collection for this report, another significant document on the method includes observations, interviews, and testing. The sample used in this paper is 20 students in the eighth grade, one English teacher at SMP SWASTA AMALYATUL HUDA MEDAN. The results showed that the vocabulary of students in Grade 8 was very low, based on an analysis of the data, after the researcher did the study. And the researchers suggest that the English teacher should change the techniques and learning habits to incorporate and expand the vocabulary of students and still make those students feel not bored and difficult, but rather benefit from learning the English language. Keywords:  Analysis, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

Information technology is well developed today. This is shown by several applications that support online activities, social activities, commerce, services, and learning. In this pandemic situation (covid-19), several institutions provided policies to carry out online learning to prevent and minimize the spread of the Covid-19 virus. In this case, the institution committees ask the teachers and lecturers to provide online learning to students, especially in learning English. The purpose of this study was to determine the teachers' perceptions in online language learning. Researchers used a questionnaire instrument to conduct surveys and interviews to obtain qualitative data. This is aimed to observe the teachers’ perception towards online language teaching practices and changes in teaching to online teaching. The things encountered during learning, as well as obstacles faced by the English teacher. In online learning, teachers must be able to involve students so that the situation runs like face-to-face learning. The final results of this study will be useful for online language teachers, institutions, and all aspects involved in education.

Abstract

Abstract The aims of this research to analyze the violation of maxim on vlog jurnalrisa the episode “Tanyarisa #11 - SPESIAL PETER CS”. To achieve this goal, this study was designed with descriptive qualitative. Data collected by transcription Host and Speaker conversations (childhood friends) in Youtube Channel jurnalrisa with a duration of 50:36 minutes. The data is then analyzed by four Grice maxims quantitatively. The finding shows; first, there are three types of a maxim of violations as 50% violated the maxim of quantity, 40% violated the maxim of relevance, 10% violated the maxim of manner. Second, the dominant type of violation that has been violated of quantity because they tend not to reveal information. Third, the violations of the maxim happen because when the speakers provide information or utterances to change the conversation, there is ambiguity, obscurity answers, and exaggerates or reduces information so it is not informative. Keywords:        Cooperative Principle, Violation of maxim, vlog

Abstract

The 2020 U.S presidential election came with the result of Joe Biden’s victory. This research is aimed at investigating Biden’s ideology manifested in his inaugural speech which was delivered on January 20, 2021. The analysis in this research was conducted under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). In finding the ideology, the researcher worked on the microstructure level by studying the presupposition as proposed by Dijk. The result of this research shows that there are three types of presupposition present in Biden’s inaugural speech i.e. lexical, existential, and factive in which lexical presupposition appear to be the most frequent one. The analysis of the presupposition also result to the finding of Biden’s ideology manifestation towards the issue of immigrants, healthcare, racism, democracy, and climate change.

Abstract

Instructional media is a tool used by teachers to explain material in the classroom, which is anything that can be used to stimulate children's thoughts, attention, and feelings, to encourage the learning process. Therefore the teacher of English for young learner must create a fun classroom setting by using media, beside of technique and method to attract students attention. The aimed of this study is to describe the teacher's preparation and explain the use of media in the classroom. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, by collecting data using interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results of this study indicate that in preparing the media, the teacher must understand the material to be taught and adjust the media to be used with the material. The use of media depend on the material, and on this research the media used by teachers are coursebooks, video, realia and picture.  Such as video to train on students' speaking and listening skills. Picture is to increase children's knowledge about vocabulary. Coursebooks are used to practice student's reading and writing skill, while realia is used to introduce children to real subject. Keywords:  English, Young learner, Instructional Media

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze various styles of language and also politeness in them. The first phase in this project is by watching a video from one of the youtubers named Qorygore. The second phase, records what or what utterances are said on the video. Then in the third phase, it starts analyzing the language style and politeness. During the analysis of the data, the researcher try to find the utterances are related to language style and politeness, and the type of language style found in this result of analysis data are formal and casual style, while the thing that reflects the politeness that is more dominant is negative politeness. Keywords:  Language Style, Negative/Positive Politeness

Abstract

This study aims to see which types of reiteration are commonly occurred in the storybook entitled ''The Thing in the Dungeon'' by Emma Lay bourn. This study used descriptive qualitative research and used document analysis as a research instrument. The storybook is a book containing stories for children. The authors chose the storybook as research material because it has its structure that is intended specifically for children, and has a high number of viewers and ratings. The objectives of the research are to analyze the types of reiteration that mostly used in that storybook. From this research, the data presented sequentially 115 (93.4%) for repetition, 7 (5, 6) % for a synonym, and 1 (1%) for antonym. The writers didn’t found types of reiteration superordination which cover hyponym and metonym. After conducting research the researchers concluded that repetition is the most types of reiteration that are used in the storybook because they attract special attention to a certain message. Abstract

A podcast is a digital multimedia file that can be downloaded to a portable media player, phone, or other device via the internet. There are many audio podcast that can be used in learning listening, one of them is British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast. This research aimed to describe how the contribution and the problems in using British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast in EFL students’ listening skill. This research was conducted at IAIN Palangka Raya. The type of this study was a qualitative approach. The data was taken from interview and documentation. Eight EFL students and two lecturers in IAIN Palangka Raya were the subjects of this research. They were determined by purposive sampling technique. The findings reveal that the use of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast give positive contribution to students’ listening skill. Based on the result of the research using British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast can develop students’ listening skill, vocabularies and they will be familiar with British accent. The problems in using the BBC podcast faced by the students were unfamiliar pronunciation, lack of vocabularies, and the speaker who spoke fast. Keywords:  Podcast, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast, EFL students, listening skill

Abstract

Based on the fact that the students writing ability, was very low, so the students had difficulties in writing especially writing recount text. The aims of this research to find out: 1) The implementation of the scenario in teaching English writing recount text using think-talk-write technique by digital storytelling 2) The students difficulties in learning writing recount text using think-talk-write technique by digital storytelling. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the study was the eight grade students in one of junior high school that consist of twenty students. The instrument used in this study were observation sheet and questionnaire. The results of this study indicated that the implementation of teaching and learning process was done in accordance with the scenario that had been made by the researcher. The initial assignment was given to the students to know what are the difficulties faced by the students. Based on the result, it could be mentioned that the students difficulties were the use of grammar, poor vocabulary-especially in spelling and how to use appropriate vocabulary. After learning using the TTW technique, the students could overcome their difficulties. They could understand better the use of grammar and structure, appropriate vocabulary and better in spelling. Keywords:  Think-Talk-Write, Digital Storytelling, Writing

Abstract

The technology of information and communication (ICT) has evolved in the sector of education. Many elements have dramatically changed exponentially over the past three decades. It can modify and simplify the development of learning activities. Thus, Google Classroom will provide a blended learning platform in the education aspect. Google Classroom provides various things simpler for teachers to conduct learning practices effectively and efficiently, not the expected learning just in class, but even outside the classroom. It is revolutionizing schooling, thus the combination of mixed-method learning is also needed by each school. The advent of blended is among the most significant outcomes of the revolution. Learning which incorporates the essence of face-to-face and ICT use is needed in the era of 4.0. This article discusses existing theories, and empirical evidence relating to the essence of blended learning and Google Classroom in ELT. This research is used to create teachers’ broad mind widely to the use of Google Classroom as the blended course in English Language Teaching.
