Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the main character in the Five Feet Apart movie. The moral messages contained among there is sincere love stories, patience in the fight against illness, close friendship relations, and others. This research is a descriptive qualitative study, where the researcher collected and analyzed data through several steps (1) the researcher watched a video that contains the Five Feet Apart movie (2) the researcher watched and observed the movie repeatedly (3) the researcher made the script of the Five Feet Apart movie as a dialog text (4) the researcher made thegroup the data in the form of dialogue that reflects the main characters in the Five Feet Apart movie (5) the researcher analyzed the dialogues that reflect the main characters of the Five Feet Apart movie in the table and (6) the researcher described and analyzed the main character in the Five Feet Apart movie. And then the researcher uses tables to measure the results of research which then concludes data relating to the main characters in the Five Feet Apart movie. Based on the results of the study found that Stella's character as the main character is humorous, full of love, friendly, steadfast, strong, smart, caring, emphatic, patient, discipline, optimistic, brave, forgiving, wise,  polite, fair, obedient, and stubborn. So, Stella is the protagonists because most of  her characters are good. Keywords:  Movie, Character, Five Feet Apart

Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate the constraints and ability in Reading comprehension. This research was qualitative research. The subjects were 20 students of Class VII A of MTs Uswatun Hasanah, and they were divided into two groups based on their score. The students getting score above the standard score were grouped in group A; and those getting score under the standard score were in group B. To gain the data, the study employed the Reading test and as the instruments. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The finding revealed that there was only one student getting high score (above the standard score), while 19 students got low score (under the standard score). Furthermore, the Reading comprehension ability between the students of group A and B was not significantly different and their constraints were relatively similar.Keywords: constraints, descriptive text, reading comprehension

Abstract

This research is aimed at exploring ice breaker technique in teaching English for student at Junior High School in Cimahi. Based on the important of teaching English in Indonesia as foreign language. So by doing ice breaking before learning, it is expected that students can focus on the learning English process. In this research the writer used case study and qualitative research method. The subject of this research was on of an English teacher at One of Junior High School in Cimahi. The instrument of this research are observation, and interview. The result of this research is students’ to be focus and fun on learning English in the class.

Abstract

This research aims to identify and analyze idiomatic expression translation strategy in the novel “The Fault In Our Stars” and to find out the most dominant strategy used in the translation. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach. This research uses semantic and syntactic strategy by using Chasterman' s theory,  idiomatic translation strategy from Baker' s theories, and Searle's theory related to the speech act. The data presented in this research is based on John Green's novel, The Fault In Our Stars, there are 100 data was found. The result of this research asserts that Trope Change is the most common strategy, which is followed by Distribution as a Semantic Strategy. Meanwhile Scheme Change is the most common strategy, which is followed by Transposition as Syntactic Strategy. Strategy Idioms by "Using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form" is frequently seen in the data. As a last finding, the utterances containing these idiomatic expressions convey a Speech Acts in terms of Assertive act is commonly used here because statements appear frequently in conversations on average. Keywords:  Idiomatic Expressions, Translation Strategy, Semantic, Syntactic, Linguistic Approach

Abstract

Nowadays, all about K-Pop (Korean Pop) widely known in the world, South Korea’s music industry is known to have a music chart system that is very influential on the career and achievement of a singer. The system is to measure the success of a group or solo singer when they release a song. Some of the terms that are known by most K-Pop fans are real-time all-kill (RAK) certificates, certified all-kill (CAK), and perfect all-kill (PAK). Songs that receive RAK, CAK, or PAK certificates, can be interpreted as best-selling songs played on digital music services in Korea. This is an interpreting analysis of IU’s hit songs taken from 2011 until 2020, aimed to see what linguistic factors that makes them hit and achieve PAK. This research used a qualitative method. This research concluded 8 from 15 of IU songs make it achieve PAK because of numerous factors such as: the music, the instrument, the singing style, and the lyric with figurative languages. In academic environments, teacher may teach the students how to analyze song lyric because it is useful to teach vocabulary, idiom, and also elements of poetry. Keywords:  Analysis, Interpreting, Music, IU

Abstract

The use of technology has become an essential element in teaching and learning process. Usually, each language class uses some type of technology tools that are used to support and enhance language learning. They are tools to help teachers facilitate their students' language learning. This research focuses on the role of technology in learning English as a foreign and second language. It addresses the significance of technology that allows English language learners to develop their learning abilities. In this paper, the researchers describe the term technology integration,  of technology, explain the use of technology in the language classroom, discuss the advantages and challenges of technology integration, and provide some suggestions for better use of these technologies to help learners develop their learning abilities.

Abstract

The study is an attempt to find out the difference between Sanguine and Phlegmatic personality toward their speaking ability. The design in this study was comparative analysis design. The samples of this study were 44 students from Faculty of Law. Personality test was carried out to decide whether the students were categorized to the group of Sanguine or Phlegmatic. Furthermore, the researcher used personal description for monologue speaking technique for testing the students speaking skills. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula to investigate whether there was significant difference result between the Sanguine and the Phlegmatic students in their speaking skill. From the result of the study, it could be concluded that there was no significant different result between the Sanguine and the Phlegmatic students toward their speaking skill. It means, there were not any better students in speaking between both Sanguine and Phlegmatic students. Those two personalities, the Sanguine and the Phlegmatic students could perform better English speaking skill through their own personal way.Keywords:  Comparison Study, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Analysis of the needs is an imperative pace for curriculum developers in different subjects, including assisted-technology in prewriting activities in EFL Journalism. Needs are required to examine the assisted-technology demanded while EFL learners applied prewriting activities. This study aimed to study assisted-technology necessities in EFL students' prewriting activities at a private university in Indonesia. The study investigated the needs of assisted technology in prewriting activities in EFL Journalism learning. A qualitative description has been developed. Seventy-two students completed the questionnaires, and several students were also interviewed. The result revealed that students are in needs, lacks, and wants assisted-technology in prewriting activities. This study suggests that teachers and universities periodically carry out a needs analysis to develop a curriculum and teaching strategies for all of these reflective needs.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to know the correlation between students’ motivation and their achievement in reading comprehension. The research used quantitative method and correlational research as design. The population of the study was the seventh grade students of Junior High School 1 cisarua, Kabupaten Bandung Barat in academic year 2017/2018 with total number 395 students and the sample in this study is 32 students. Instruments for data collection were the questionnaire to find out students’ motivation and the reading comprehension test. Pearson Product Moment was used to analyze the data and the hypothesis testing was computed by applying SPSS version 22. It was found that there is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and their achievement in reading because the correlation coefficient was 0.658. It was classified into high correlation . Thus, there is a significant correlation between reading motivation and reading motivation. The result can be interpreted that students’ motivation had strong effect to reading comprehension skill.  It is suggested the English teachers have to create teaching strategies that will motivate the students to read in class.Keywords: Correlation, students’ motivation, reading, achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the implementation of scientific appproach through digital storytelling in teaching reading narrative text. The participants of the study were the tenth grade students in SMA Pasundan Cikalong.  Furthermore, this study employed case study as research design and conducted the classroom observation sheet to find out how the teacher implemented scientific approach in teaching reading narrative text. The finding of the study showed that the teacher implemented of scientific approach in teaching reading through several stages such as observing, questioning, experimenting, associating and communicating. In addition, during learning reading narrative text through digital storytelling, students become more engaged in the classroom as a result of their enjoyment. It may be stated that using a scientific approach through digital storytelling made it easier for students to understand the narrative text. Finally, the writer recommends that an English instructor use a scientific approach to teaching narrative text reading during the learning process. Keywords:  Scientific Approach, Digital Storytelling, Teaching Reading, Narrative Text
