Abstract

This research aimed to describe the implementation of Whatsapp and Zoom application, the strength and the weaknesses of Whatsapp and Zoom in online learning. This research was carried out at IAIN Palangka Raya. This study was used a qualitative approach. The data was taken through interview and documentation. The participants of this research were eight students from IAIN Palangka Raya. The sample were taken based on the purposive sampling technique. The result of the study are : Whatsapp and Zoom are two applications that can help students to practice English, make learning process more effective, and facilitate the lecturer-students interaction and communication. It provides many features to support the learning process for sharing information and can give positive contribution to help in online learning. The dominant problems to apply them are bad internet connection, need a lot of money to buy quota and lack of supporting facility for internet. Keywords:  Implementation, Whatsapp, Zoom, Public Speaking Course, Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

In this study, the researcher used qualitative research method to find out students’ perception in writing descriptive text. The subjects of this research were the 25 students in SMPN 32 Bandung. They were 13 boys and 12 girls. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test, post-test that given after the students had got the treatment and also questionnaire. The result of the study showed the highest score for pre-test was 84, the lowest score was 16, and the mean score was 43.2. The data showed that the students’ score still low. And the highest score for post-test was 90, the lowest score was 40, and the mean score was 68.8. It means that students improved their ability after the treatment given, and their perception in writing descriptive text was found. But the researcher indicates that the students were still in low level or their ability in writing descriptive text was still weak.  Keywords:        Students’ Perception, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Inflectional is the smallest part of morphosyntax but it becomes important because it is the basic knowledge that students have to comprehend in learning and producing correct sentence. To understand them, the students have to learn it through virtual learning in COVID-19 pandemic era which  has changed the way of teaching and learning process especially in Morphosyntax. This research aimed to explore the types and the students’ difficulties in understanding inflectional process of morphology. This research used descriptive qualitative method to describe and to analyze the data. To collect the data, the researchers used two kinds of instruments namely pre-test, post-test, and interview. The population in this research consist of two classes from English Education Study Program at the fifth semester at IKIP Siliwangi.The result showed that the student mostly found the types of inflectional process namely plural form, 3rd singular person, past tense, progressive, comparative and superlative correctly while participle both in present and past tense form are mostly found incorrectly for they are having the higher function which are having similarity as verb progressive and as adjective at the same time. To understand the difference of the both function, the students are demanded to recognize well the structure of both. Keywords:  Inflectional Process, Morphosyntax, Online Learning

Abstract

Language is a tool of communication used by people anywhere and every time. Now days people commonly find a figurative language in daily life, for example in a lyric of song. Figurative language is a way to express an idea in implicit way. This research is trying to analyze the figurative languages which exist in the lyric of song “A Whole New World” and trying to find out its meaning by analyzing its contextual meaning. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data instrument is the song lyric which taken from Genius website. The result showed that this song consist of some figurative languages, such as alliteration, simile, personification, metaphor, and hyperbole. Furthermore, the most figurative language used in the lyric is metaphor. It is highly relatable with the imaginative theme of the song itself. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also explained based on the situation of the lyric.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative research which aims to analyze the kinds of dominant deixis in the song lyrics entitled ‘Lover’. The data collected from the lyrics then classified into types of deixis according to Levinson (1983:62) theory. The classification of the data then analyzed by relating the deixis to the references/meaning from the lyrics. The result of this research found that there are 51 deixis found in the lyrics consist of 39 personal deixis, 7 temporal deixis, and 5 spatial deixis. Most of personal deixis in ‘Lover’ lyric refer to the speaker itself which are encoded by first singular personal deixis like I and My. While for first plural personal deixis which is We, mostly refer to the speaker. Finally, this research is expected to provide an understanding of deixis and the context that is conveyed by the speaker. Keywords: Deixis, Pragmatics, Song Lyrics

Abstract

This study aims to determine the increase in students' mastery of English vocabulary using crosswords and to find out what are the effects of using crosswords in the learning process. This research uses classroom action research methods. Researchers conducted research in one of the junior high schools in Cimahi and the subjects in this study consisted of 34 students. For data collection researchers used observation, interviews and tests, to find out whether there was progress from students in improving their mastery of English vocabulary. This research was carried out in two cycles. In the first cycle the average value of students 58.97 and categorized as still very low or bad. Then the researchers proceed to the second cycle by using the steps in classroom action research and the researcher is more focused on attracting students' attention to focus on learning and explaining the instructions for working on crosswords. Therefore in the second cycle, the average value of students increased to 76.02 and the category is good. This shows that there is an increase in the mastery of English vocabulary after implementing crossword puzzle games in the learning process in the classroom. Keywords:  Improving, Vocabulary mastery, Crossword puzzle

Abstract

This research aims to identify words contain the deixis from Tribunnews.com and then describes the factors of the deixis that also give more understanding to the reader about types of deixis which are used in tribunnews.com. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the words contained in Tribunnew.com. Data collection used by the researchers is documentation, there are: collecting the data, reading and observing, finding the data, putting sign and making a checklist on it, taking and presenting them in the data display, and finding con clusions. Moreover, the researchers found the deixis in the news that the word of I (24.51%), we (1.96%), he (8.82%), calling name (6.86%), kindship lexemes (32.35%). The word of place or location like a beach, Krakatau mountain, etc is spatial deixis is a place (9.80%) and adverb of place (8.82%). And the last the use of time such as then, now, soon, day, today, etc is the temporal deixis there are deictic Modifier (2.94%) and non-deictic (3.92%). From this research, the researchers conclude that online article creates a narrative in the news that discusses natural disasters, uses a lot of deixes to the person, place, and time.Keywords:  Deixis, Tribunnews, Pragmatics

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the difficulties of writing descriptive text and what factors causing difficulties in writing descriptive text. This study involved 12 students in eighth grade of junior high school in Cipongkor. To obtain the data, three kinds of the research instruments were used, namely a writing test (Heaton, 1988), questionnaire and observation. The findings based on the writing test showed that the errors produced by the students were missordering with 33.6%, the punctuation 26.8%, the tenses 17.4%, wrong diction 12.1%, spelling 7.4%, and the last is prepositions 2.7%. Based on the questionnaire and observation, the factors caused students difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of interest in learning English, the poor understanding of the generic structure of descriptive test, poor in grammar knowledge and use, and the low motivation in writing descriptive text. Keywords:  Errors, Descriptive Text, Writing

Abstract

Understanding the text is one of the objectives of English study. Before understanding the complex sentence the basic skill that student need to master is to understand the phrases of each sentence. This article objectives are to give more understanding about noun phrases in magazine article to help student easy to understand the basic of English especially phrase. The reason writer choose noun phrase is the most commonly used phrase in the sentence is the noun phrase and the writer want to make the reader familiar with noun phrase. This article will analyze the magazine article with 22 sentences and also contains 66 noun phrases in it. Which the writer will determine the modifier every noun phrase in it. Therefore, mastering phrases is a key to become a fluent speaker of English. Keywords:  Noun Phrases, Magazine Article

AbstractIn this research used qualitative research method, qualitative research is “a situated activity that locates the observer in the world. It consist of set of interpretive, material practices that make the world visible. These practice transform the world and in this research would be find out how speech and grammar used by Fathia Izzati and Nessie Jedge in the video of Cara Berbahasa Inggris dengan Lancar. In this research, finding the conclusion from video cara berbahasa inggris by Nessie Jedge and Fathia, there are many word used in their conversation its like anaphoric, textual theme, reference, topical theme and comparative reference.
