Abstract

This research analyzes students’ reading speed of recount text at tenth-grade students of SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi. The researchers used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The subject of this research was 30 students of eleventh-grade students in SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi. The instrument in this research was a reading test of recount text. The researchers used a stopwatch to count the time while students were reading the text. Based on the reading speed test, the typical speed of reading students revealed that three students could read 100-149 words per minute (wpm) in slow category, and other 27 students can only obtain 50-99 wpm in very slow category. In summary, the skill of reading speed students at X grade in SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi was very slow.

Abstract

This research discusses about the use of code-mixing by the pilot and YouTuber Captain Vincent Raditya on his YouTube channel. Captain Vincent Raditya is often seen mixing Indonesian code into English or otherwise. Therefore, The aims of the research are to find out how many code mixing that is used and to know the most dominant code mixing. Code mixing can occur if a speaker uses a language predominantly and then inserts it with another language. This can occur related to character, social background, education level, religion, and limitations in language equivalent expressions. In this research, the writers used type code-mixing from Hoffman. There are 3 types of Code Mixing; intra-sentential mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and involving a change a pronunciation. In this research the writers used qualitative method, the data were taken from video Captain Vincent Raditya on Youtube and analyzed by code-mixing, the data analysis of code-mixing is displayed as a precentage. The data shows that there are 3 kinds of code mixing that were used by Captain Vincent Raditya. First, type intra-sentential mixing with percentage (86%), intra-lexical code mixing (10%), and involving a change a pronunciation (4%). Based on the data, the most dominant types of code-mixing is used by Captain Vincent Raditya is types intra-sentential mixing with percentage 64 (64%) by inserts words, phrases, clauses, or sentences in his utterance.

Abstract

This article aims to find out the kind and dominant deixis found in the song lyrics of Bangtan Boys and to identify the moral value of song by Bangtan Boys for human’s life. The descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct this article. The data of this article were obtained by using documents and library research. The Source of data on this research was song lyrics from Bangtan boys namely “Dynamite”. Based on the results and discussion, the researchers deixis proposed deixis from Yule (1996) was found in BTS’s song lyrics. 56 data that contained deixis, included personal deixis is mostly found in 36 occurrences dominant in this song. The words are I, you, me, we, and my. Spatial deixis those are home, this, the city, and in the mirror which found in 7 occurrences. Temporal deixis is tonight, day or night, night, mortn, when and summer which are found in 13 occurrences. It can be concluded , in song lyrics “Dynamite”  the most dominant type used of deixis were personal deixis. The researchers founded 3 types of moral values from the song that are bravely, cooperativeness and thankfulness.  The researchers concluded that the moral values in song lyrics “Dynamite” by BTS was living life by doing the best and full of spirit.

Abstract

Motivation is an important factor in achieving many basic goals in a student’s academic life. This research aims to examine the sources of motivation to learn English of English education students in Indonesia. This is a survey study using a questionnaire adapted from the Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). As many as 31 respondents filled out the questionnaires, then the data were analyzed by descriptive quantitative method. Based on the findings of the research, most of the respondents have integrative as well as instrumental orientation. The data show that the most common motivation of the participants in learning English is social and cultural motivation or integrative orientation, because the respondent think that English is required make them more educated. The results suggest that teachers face the challenge of making design and implement learning methods that strengthen integrative motivation.

Abstract

Slang word is an informal words, phrases, and expressions that often used between people who already close to each other. Slang words often used in daily conversation in a group of people or in literary work such as book, movies, or song. In this research, the researcher attempt to analyze slang words that used in a song. Lowkey by Niki is chosen as a subject of the research. Descriptive qualitative was used in this research.The result of the research shown that there are 22 slang words found in the lyric. From 22 slang words, 4 words are considered as fresh and creative type, 7 words are categorized as flippant, 4 words are imitative type, and 7 words are classified as clipping.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most important skills in learning or mastering English, and also one of the problems that are often faced by teachers and students. Because some students still have limited motivations to learn and increase their writing skill. One method to solved that problem is running dictation. The research was conducted to the eight grade of Pasundan 1 Cimahi. The Purpose of this research was to identify students’ responses in writing descriptive text by using running dictation. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The result showed that student’s responses have good responses. As a result, this technique could be an alternative technique for teaching writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of suffixes and to find out the frequently used prefixes and suffixes in CNN’s Jacqueline Howard's article titled "Eating A Plant-Based Diet Might Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes, Study Suggests". In this research, the writer uses descriptive qualitative methods by conducting 3 steps in analyzing the text taken from the CNN website. The first step is searching and collecting the data, the next is analyzing the data, and the last is classify the words that have been analyzed according to this kind. The method of collecting in this research is taken from CNN’s website. In Jacqueline Howard's article for CNN, there are prefixes and suffixes. Data appears in various forms of prefix and suffix. The total data prefix in Jacqueline Howard's article for CNN is 11. From the data that has been analyzed, the writer found four types of suffix in Jacqueline Howard's article for CNN. The total number of data words of Noun Suffix in text is 5. The data words of Verbal Suffix in text are 3, the data words of Adjectival Suffix in text are 5, and the last data word of Adverbial Suffix in text is 7. Then the writer also concluded that the frequently used prefix in Jacqueline Howard's articles is the prefix "In-." And the type of suffix often used is the word adverbial, like-ly.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to see how students react to creating greeting cards with Canva through project-based learning. Canva allows pupils to expand their creativity and ideas for expressing things in writing. The sample for this study was eighth-grade junior high school students in Padalarang, and the research technique was descriptive qualitative. The research tools were obtained using a ten-questions of the questionnaire. The researcher found that students' responses to producing greeting cards using Canva through project-based learning were favourable based on the results of the data analysis. This response demonstrates that canva can be used effectively in writing. Based on the data, 70% of respondents properly characterize text using Canva as part of project-based learning. Using Canva, 60% of pupils can improve their creativity in explaining things. However, 50% of students have yet to understand Canva's capabilities, making it difficult to create greeting cards quickly. Furthermore, in this pandemic circumstance, employing online learning may be diverse media in the teaching and learning process. Canva may be used as a substitute for writing greeting cards. Using Canva, students find it enjoyable and straightforward to create greeting cards.

Abstract

This studied aims to found outthe students’ response and difficulties in online learned descriptive text through WhatsApp. The subject of this researched was junior high school students who were in seventh grade. The data of this research were obtained by questionnaire and one open-ended question,questionnaire was distributed through Google Form. There were 19 students filled out the form. The results showed that students had positive response to the use of Whatsapp in online learning. However, they found several obstacles, about 47% said they had no difficulties, 31% said they had difficult personal conditions, and 21% of the 19 students said it was difficult to find a good connection. In the case they did not have quota and good signal. This impacted to their understanding of the material given. Besides, some of them had a problem in using WhatsApp, it was due to the smarthphone condition. This indicates that good access and has quota is one of important to conduct the online learning. The other supportive aspect is having good smartphone or tools.

Abstract

This literature review aims to analyze jigsaw technique in teaching vocabulary effect. Vocabulary is the first important in language learning component, to mastering four language skill. In this study, researchers are figure out on jigsaw effectiveness whether the results are positive or negative, and are also looking for the differences and similarities of the journal entries. The associated journal paper was identified and chosen using Google scholar and the educational research center. In the seven journals, there were five to use the same design research is quantitative research and one jurnal using qualitative research an tthe other one library research. Many similarities from the seven journals, in obtaining data quantitative using quasi experimental and pre experimental and the data using tukey tests, anova and purposive. To qualitative the researchers employed observation, questionnaire, interview, and document analysis. And for library research,  just trying to figure out how to teach grammar in English using jigsaw techniques and the benefits of doing so.Although the settings are different whether it's the media but all the positive results are jigsaw technique can improve students’ vocabulary ability, can enhance student interaction, also jigsaw technique can improve students' vocabulary ability, as well as their interaction with the teacher and other students. It was also effective in English vocabulary development.
