Abstract

Writing descriptive text is challenging for students nowadays, especially in online learning. Online learning makes students easily bored and tend not to understand what the teacher is explaining. Therefore, an alternative learning technique is needed to maintain student focus and concentration. One technique that teachers can use is the Mind mapping technique. This study aims to determine the effect of Mind mapping technique on students' ability to write descriptive text. The research used quasi-experimental by using One Group Pretest-Posttest as the research design. The subjects of this study were 20 eleventh grade high school students in Cimahi. The researchers used SPSS to analyze the data. Based on the test result, the pretest's mean is 55.80; after the treatment using mind mapping technique, the post-test mean is 75.35, which means that there was a significant improvement when the mind mapping method was being applied. Thus, it can be concluded that mind mapping technique can improve students' writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to look into the use of song in teaching English to primary school students in greater depth. This study is an action research project done at one of Cimahi's primary schools, class V, with 15 students as participants. Data is collected from each cycle's test results. The findings revealed that incorporating song in the teaching learning process causes students to become more relaxed and active in their interactions, as seen by their greater involvement in class. Another conclusion demonstrated that integrating song, students' English language skills improved from the preliminary to the cycle II stage of the research procedure. The average preliminary score of students is 80.53, and it improved to 86.60 in the second cycle, indicating that all students can accomplish more than the minimal criterion score. It may be stated that integrating songs into the classroom to teach English to primary school students can assist students in improving their English language skills. This study indicates that songs could have been used to teach speaking skills to primary school students in order to improve their English language skills, especially speaking skills.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the students’ difficulties in writing using discovery learning. Descriptive qualitative research design was employed in this research. The subject of this research was the eighth-grade students of MTs. Az-Zahra Batujajar in the academic year 2020/2021. The data of this research was obtained from the questionnaire and test. The instrument consists of 5 statements that indicate aspects of writing there were organization, content, grammar, mechanism, and vocabulary. The result of this research is that most of the students have difficulty in grammar. Based on data the questionnaire 90% of students stated difficulties in the grammar aspect, and supported by data from the test that the lowest average score of students in the grammar aspect is 71. It can be concluded that the highest difficulty of students when writing recount text is grammar.

Abstract

This study is about the reiteration of lexical cohesion found in Emma Watson’s speech entitled Gender Equality. This study is to find out the types of reiteration in Emma Watson’s speech. The subject of this study is the speech text “Gender Equality” used by Emma Watson for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign. Descriptive qualitative was used as a research method. From the analysis, there are five types of reiteration of lexical cohesion. The result shows that there was 74 reiteration found in total in this study, namely 43 of repetition, 19 of hyponym, 4 of antonym, 5 of synonym, and 3 of superordinate or hypernym. Repetition is the most used in the speech. The reiteration used by Emma Watson in her speech has built up the cohesiveness in the speech of the action of solidarity movement for gender equality to help end the inequalities faced by women globally.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has affected the educational field so that the government have been made a regulation for schools in Indonesia to carried out online teaching-learning. However, English should be learned by the students in this pandemic condition to make the students practice their English. Due to the online learning, the students still found problems and difficulty in implementing songs as the media. This research aims to find out the problems faced during online teaching and learning particularly in vocabulary learning through English songs to the ninth-grade students at one of Junior High Schools in Bandung. The respondents were the 9 students of ninth-grade students at one of Junior High Schools in Bandung. The data was conducted by observation and test. Based on the result it can be concluded that online vocabulary learning has some obstacles faced by the teacher and students such as internet connection 13%, managing time 10%, devices 10%, technology mastery 4%, noises 10%. Moreover, these obstacles have been impacted the students that the students difficult to do and collect assignments 10%, the students cannot fully understand the materials 8%, the students became passive 8%, students feel bored 8%, students cannot do as teamwork 8%, and the students cannot follow the learning process 6%.

Abstract

Indonesia is happening in switching language and language style communication. There are many different types of media that we can use to see how code switching works, and one of them is Vlog. The purposes of this research, researchers to analyze the types of code-switching Zhafira Aqyla’s vlog and to identify the most dominant types of code-switching. This research used by using descriptive qulitative method. Based theory of  (Wiley, 2019), the first step to start this research is to collect information through watching the videos. The second is researchers analyzed of available data. Then, the third compiles the results by categories the tyes of code-switching based on Poplack theory.

Abstract

This research objective intends to investigate the students’ responses in teaching learning speaking using project based learning through WhatsApp. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subject were 20 students of nine grade junior high school in Batujajar. The questionnaire was used as an instrument in this research. The results of the research showed that the students had good response to  the use project based learning and WhatsApp in teaching speaking. They agreed that the use of project based learning and WhatsApp provided the advantages for their learning, such as increasing their motivation, prompting them to express the opinion, or improving their critical thinking. Thus, the teachers can use it while their teach speaking to the students.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how many and types of borrowed words that used in Fiersa Besari’s Catatan Juang. A novel tells about experiences of Juang, the main character. The author of this novel is known as an artist who has multi-talented starting from writer, youtuber, music composer, and singer. The method of this research is qualitative research and the object is English borrowed words in the novel entitled Catatan Juang by Fiersa Besari, bagian satu. Borrowed words can be classed into three types; loan words, loan blends and loan shifts. In loan words, language users is duplicating the item or idea from the source language. Loan blends is replicating native words to the similar meanings. Loan shifts is naming or defining one native element. Based on the analysis, the writer found 55(22,9%) loan words, 139(57,9%) loan blends, and 46(19,2%) loan shifts in sub bab of the novel. Based on the data the most dominant type that used in this novel is loand blends. The results of this study indicate that borrowed words not only can be acquired by the spoken language but also by written language.

Abstract

This research was aimed to identify (1) the implementation of teaching writing recount text using STAD technique, (2) the response of the teacher and students toward the implementation of scenario in teaching writing recount text using STAD technique, and (3) the difficulties faced by the students in writing recount text using STAD technique. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The subject of the research were students grade X MIPA 3 of SMAN 1 Cipatat. It consisted of one class with 36 students as respondents. The instruments of this research were document analysis, observation, questionnaire, and interview. The data were analyzed using Miles and Hubbermans (1994) concept of qualitative data analysis. Based on the document analysis, observation, questionnaire, and interview, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were engaged, excited, and motivated to write. Additionally, students gave positively response that the students felt that STAD technique was interesting for learning because it was easy to understand, and made class was fun, and classroom atmosphere became different used this technique. However, the data from the questionnaire showed that some students have difficulty translating text in English, it is caused by the lack of vocabulary. The result of the research showed that STAD technique could significantly improve students in writing recount text.

Abstract

This research started from researchers observation on English students' ability that is still low at seventh-grade MTs Riyadhul Huda, and students' opinion of English is boring and difficult. Based on the problems, this research purpose was to analyze students' difficulties in understanding English learning, especially Reading Comprehension and Structure. The research method was descriptive qualitative. The research sampling was seventh-grade students at MTs Riyadhul Huda, in choosing the sample was used purposive sampling technique. This is done because the class has a lower average value than the other classes. More than 50% of students got a score under the Minimum Completeness criteria. To get the data, the researchers had done interviews for the students and English teacher, then done observation and document that were gotten the score of reading and structure material. From the resulting research was gotten that reading and structure understanding at seventh-grade students MTs Riyadhul Huda, low. 40% of 25 students were difficulties in understanding them. The difficulty of students in reading and understanding the structure is caused by the lack of concentration of students in studying, students' wrong study habits, and boredom of students in learning English, besides that the teacher rarely makes corrections to student assignments.
