Abstract

Cucumber is one of the horticultural crops that  provides many benefits. One of the effort to improve cucumber growth and yield is through fertilization. Fertilization can be carried out using either inorganic or organic fertilizers. However, the continuous use of inorganic fertilizers has a negative impact on sustainable agriculture. One natural material that can be utilized as an organic fertilizer is bamboo shoots. This study aimed to determine the best concentration of liquid organic fertilizer made from bamboo shoots for the growth and yield of cucumber plants. The research was conducted from June to August 2024 at the UARDS field of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science, Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University, Riau. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments of bamboo shoot liquid organic fertilizer concentrations, namely M0: control, M1: 25%, M2: 50%, and M3: 75%. The observed parameters included plant height, flowering age, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per fruit, fruit weight per plant, wet weight, and dry weight. The results showed that the application of bamboo shoot liquid organic fertilizer had a highly significant effect plant height, flowering age, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per fruit, fruit weight per plant, wet weight, and dry weight. Abstract

Cocoa productivity is influenced by soil fertility, particularly soil chemical properties that play an important role in nutrient availability for plants. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of several soil chemical properties in cocoa plantations with different productivity levels in Malaka Regency. The research was conducted in high- and low-productivity cocoa blocks through purposive soil sampling. Laboratory analyses were carried out on several soil chemical parameters, including soil pH, organic C, available N, available P, available K, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and electrical conductivity (EC). The results showed that the high-productivity block had higher levels of organic C, nitrate-N (N-NO₃), available K, and CEC compared to the low-productivity block. Available P content in both blocks was classified as low and was suspected to be a limiting factor for cocoa growth. Soil pH values in both blocks were categorized as neutral and remained suitable for cocoa cultivation. Meanwhile, EC values in the low-productivity block were higher than those in the high-productivity block, indicating greater accumulation of soluble salts in the soil. This condition was supported by the presence of salinity symptoms observed in the field, such as drying and death of cocoa plants in the low-productivity block. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that cocoa blocks with high productivity had relatively better soil chemical properties than low-productivity blocks. Differences in soil chemical properties, particularly organic matter content, available N, available K, CEC, and salinity level, were suspected to influence cocoa productivity in Malaka Regency. Keywords: cocoa, soil chemical properties, productivity, salinity, soil fertility

Abstract

Oil palm is a palm plant that produces edible oil, industrial oil and biodiesel (biofuel). Unfortunately, the productivity of oil palm plantations nationally is still low, especially smallholder plantations managed individually. The level of oil palm production is influenced by various factors, including environmental factors where it grows, the quality of the seeds used and cultivation and management techniques in its cultivation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the weight size of oil palm seeds (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) and soaking in KNO3 solution and the interaction of the combination between the weight size of seeds and soaking in KNO3 solution on the germination of oil palm plants (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). This study was conducted in a research area located at the Oil Palm Research Center (PPKS) Sei Aek Pancur Tanjung Morawa Deli Serdang Regency. This research was conducted from April to June 2025. This research was conducted using a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 2 treatment factors, namely the seed weight size factor consisting of 3 levels, namely V1: seed weight size 0≤1 gram, V2: seed weight size 1.1≤2 grams, V3: seed weight size 2.1≤3 grams. The KNO3 Soaking Factor consists of 3 treatment levels, namely P0 = Control (soaking using water for 24 hours), P1 = KNO3 concentration 0.2% + soaking time 12 hours, P2 = KNO3 concentration 0.2% + soaking time 18 hours. The parameters observed in this study were germination rate (%), germination rate index, and dormancy index (%). The effect of soaking in KNO3 solution on the germination of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plants. The best treatment of several parameters in breaking oil palm seed dormancy was by soaking the seeds in KNO3 concentration of 0.6% for 18 hours. Abstract

The low productivity of shallots in Indonesia is mainly caused by the use of low-quality vegetative seeds and improper fertilization. The use of True Shallot Seed (TSS) combined with balanced NPK and magnesium fertilization is expected to increase shallot production. This study aimed to optimize the growth and yield of two TSS shallot varieties (Sanren F-1 and Lokananta) under various doses of NPK fertilizer (0, 83.3, 166.6, and 250 kg/ha) and magnesium fertilizer (0, 125, and 250 kg MgO/ha). The research was conducted from February to May 2021 at the experimental field of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, Medan, at 25 meters above sea level. A factorial randomized complete block design with three factors and two replications was used. The results showed that the Sanren F-1 variety produced better number of leaves (7.0 leaves), number of bulbs per clump (2.7 bulbs), and fresh weight of bulbs per plot (812 g) compared to Lokananta, while the Lokananta variety produced larger bulb diameter (33.8 mm). Application of NPK fertilizer at 250 kg/ha significantly increased plant height, number of leaves, and harvest index. The combination of Sanren F-1 variety without magnesium and 250 kg NPK/ha produced the highest fresh weight of bulbs per plot (1027 g). The interaction between variety, NPK, and magnesium significantly affected all observed growth and yield parameters. The Sanren F-1 variety with 250 kg NPK/ha without magnesium is recommended to increase shallot productivity in lowlands. Keywords: lokananta, magnesium, NPK, sanren F-1, shallot, true shallot seed

Abstract

Mucuna bracteata is a type of legume commonly used as a ground cover plant in oil palm plantations. This plant is useful for reducing weeds, increasing soil fertility, and improving soil structure through nitrogen fixation. However, Mucuna bracteata seeds have a very hard, impermeable shell, which prevents water from entering the embryo and slows down the germination process. The purpose of this study was to examine how mechanical scarification of seeds can improve their germination capacity. Mechanical scarification was carried out by damaging the tip of the seed until the white flesh was visible. Observations were made for 4 weeks after planting and included the percentage of germination, plant vine length, and number of leaves. The results showed that scarification accelerated and increased the seed germination rate by 30%. However, its effectiveness in breaking the dormancy of all seeds was still low, so additional methods or combinations of other treatments are needed to achieve higher germination rates. Keywords: Mucuna Bracteata, Mechanical Scarification, Germination
