Abstract

Modality is a key semantic category that operates at the sentence level. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of modality and semantic meaning of modality in Taylor Swift's songs lyrics. The data are all lyrics from five selected songs on Taylor Swift's Folklore album: August, Cardigan, Mad Woman, Peace and Seven. The method for the research was qualitative content analysis. The results showed 31 modalities, among which were the epistemic modality; necessity (1), and probability (6). Deontic modality; obligation (2). Dynamic modality; Ability (6) and volition (16). Additionally, volition is the semantic meaning of modality that this research indicated to be most dominant. In dynamic modality, volition is the desire to act consciously or intentionally, which requires the individual's choice and effort. Students and individuals who have a solid understanding of modality are better able to communicate their ideas clearly and modify their communication style in accordance with the situation.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the implement of mind mapping techniques to improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative texts in eleven grade of MA Al-Islah Dasan Agung academic year 2023-2024. The research was conduct at Al-Islah Dasan Agung on 17 July – 03 August 2023. This research was carried in two classes, these are XI A as the experimental class consisted of 13 students and XI B as a control class consisted of 13 students. The research used quantitative method with quasi-experimental design. The data were gathered through test which were delivered into the pre-test and post-test. Based on the result of the research showed that mind mapping technique is improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text, because the value of gained score (20.77) is higher than the control class (10.77). From the result of statistic hypothesis, has significance value 0.001. Based on the significance table is 0.05, meanings that 0.05 > 0.001. In other word the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, teaching reading comprehension of narrative text has improves through mind mapping technique

object. The researchers were interested in examining the Kontrakan Rempong vlog film because we witnessed the phenomena of ladies whose passion is gossip, exposing the humiliation of others. The purpose of this research is to look into the gossip myth in Kontrakan Rempong. Gossip serves a purpose that extends beyond the scope of interpersonal relationships; consequently, gossip serves societal purposes. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this investigation, along with data reduction strategies. The researchers employed semiotics in their research is from Roland Barthes to find hidden meanings (myths) from the gossip conveyed in these two films. As the conclusion of this research is to prove that a film or sitcom is a picture of what is happening in society. Apart from that, this research aims to prove that people who like to gossip are people who lack the knowledge to use their free time, and gossip is portrayed by women in Kontrakan Rempong, because not all gossip is a falsehood generated by human envy and jealousy.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out how students perceive English learning using the blended learning method combined with a collaborative learning approach and to find out what advantages teachers and students get when learning using collaborative learning. The research is a qualitative case study, and the data was collected by observations and interviews with students and teachers. The results of this research indicate that almost all students agree that collaborative learning can help them to improve their skills in English subjects. In addition, from the results of observations, students are more active in collaborative learning. By applying collaborative learning, students can discuss problem-solving and have more opportunities to practice speaking. Collaborative learning using blended learning is a new learning approach that can improve students' ability, in conclusion the writers hope this finding can help students increase their confidence in learning speaking. The writers realize that this research is not perfect, but the writers hope that this research can inspire English teachers and future researchers.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to identify the results of Serang Javanese students' pronunciation in English, the impact of Serang Javanese accent when speaking English and the difficulties Serang Javanese students face when speaking English. This research uses descriptive analysis method and qualitative approach. This research consists of 19 respondents, 14 male respondents and 5 female respondents. Data collection was conducted using four techniques namely observation, interview, pronunciation task, and documentation. This research uses data analysis and transcription techniques. The data analysis technique was carried out by processing transcripts of observation notes, interviews, pronunciation tasks, and document review. The data that has been obtained is then transcribed to explain the results of data collection. The findings of this study are that the pronunciation tasks of the two Serang Javanese-speaking students are very poor. The resulting impact is the sound produced by the Serang Javanese students becomes heavy and unpleasant to hear. Another impact is changing the meaning of the spoken word and making the listener misunderstand. The last impact is to make the listener confused. The Serang Javanese students have difficulties when speaking English, mainly due to the lack of vocabulary.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to analyze the figurative language used in the Disney movie songs. The data were collected from the internet with five song titles selected from different Disney movies including; Lead the Way (Raya and the Last Dragon), Carried Me With You (Onward), Nobody Like U (Turning Red), Loyal Brave, and True (Mulan), and Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid). By utilizing descriptive qualitative as the research method, the researcher analyzed the interpretation of five types of figurative language including: metaphor, simile, personification, irony, and hyperbole. The findings in this study through analyzed the five songs indicated that there are 43 figurative languages, consists of 13 metaphors, 2 similes, 4 personifications, 3 ironies, and 21 hyperboles. It can be concluded that hyperbole was the dominant type of figurative in Disney song lyrics. Therefore, this study may help readers, especially for teachers and students in understand the analysis of figurative language theory songs.
