Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of information needs on youth drug prevention behavior through WhatsApp, using the Uses and Gratification theory. Drug abuse among the youth in Medan is a serious concern, necessitating an effective communication medium to raise awareness and prevention efforts. WhatsApp, as a popular communication application, has great potential in disseminating information related to drug prevention. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach, where data was collected through interviews and participatory observation. The findings show that youths who feel their information needs are met through WhatsApp tend to be more cautious in their social interactions and more active in sharing information with peers. However, there are challenges in ensuring that all youth understand the content being shared, especially text-based content. The conclusion of this study states that WhatsApp is effective as a communication medium for drug prevention, especially if the content is tailored to the preferences of the youth.

Abstract

This article is about the phenomenon of me(pe)rantau tragic among Minangkabau people in four novels by Minangkabau authors after Pemerintahan Revolusioner Republik Indonesia (PRRI), namely Panggilan Tanah Kelahiran by Dt. B. Nurdin Jacub, Saraswati Si Gadis dalam Sunyi by A.A. Navis, Warisan by Chairul Harun, and Bako by Darman Moenir. These famous novels after PRRI are sociological and philosophical based novels that express the author's worldview at the maximum level of coherence. In the analysis of these four novels, Lotman's narrative text theory is applied to elaborate the structure of literary works as a conceptual construction centered on the idea of binary opposition. Lotman's elaboration reinforces Eco's view that certain cultural units become meaningful when placed within another cultural unit that is opposed to them. Based on the analysis, the novels that are the subject of this study place the overseas world (dunia rantau) as a source of problems for the Minangkabau people. The characters who encounter the overseas world (dunia rantau) are positioned as "the disobedient" when they face the village world (dunia kampung) as an oppositional relationship.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how the audience's reception is related to the representation of disabled characters in the movie Agak Laen. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method by conducting in-depth interviews with the audience of the movie Agak Laen and documentation. With the discourse related to discrimination that has surfaced, the researcher wants to use a reception analysis to find out how the audience accepts the representation of disabled characters in the film Agak Laen. The results of the reception will then be classified into three positions of message reception according to Stuart Hall's theory, namely hegemony-dominant, negotiation, and oppositional. The results of this study show that the results of interviews with seven informants have different message acceptance. Two informants were in the hegemony-dominant position, two were in the negotiation position, and three were in the oppositional position. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the representation of disability in the media, especially in movies, still does not represent people with disabilities in real life. The media is still fixated on stereotypes that have existed for a long time, so it rarely researches matters related to disability. With the variety of answers from the informants, it can also be concluded that each informant has a different acceptance based on their experience and knowledge.

Abstract

This research was studied to find out the thoughts of Shah Ismail I in spreading Shi'a in Iran and how the existence of Shi'a theology can survive until today in Iran. In addition, this research also intends to describe the pattern of propagation carried out by Shah Ismail I in spreading Shi'ism during the Safavid empire. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a historiographic approach and based on historical studies. The data sources in this research come from literature studies obtained from various books and journals relevant to research studies in the field of Islamic civilization studies regarding the history of the Safavid empire, especially Shah Ismail I. In the data collection stage, researchers collected literature sources obtained from various books and journals. In the data collection method, researchers collect secondary sources such as books, journals, and academic materials that are historical in nature. After that, researchers traced and compiled the data obtained based on the study of historical literature. After completing the data search and collection stage, the next stage is for researchers to analyze all the data obtained by collaborating all data from secondary sources, then all data is presented and analyzed narratively in the form of points. The results showed that Ismail I during his leadership embraced a theocratic pattern at the beginning of his leadership. Then, he also politicized religion as a way to expand his territory to other regions. Shah Ismail I also applied Shiite theology to the daily life of his people. This shows that the existence of the Shi'a sect in Iran is estimated to have started since the reign of the Safavid dynasty led by Shah Ismail I.

Abstract

Comics can be categorized as literary works because they contain stories, ideas, and thoughts. Comics have at least two elements, such as images, and narration, which are interrelated. The pictures in comics are intended to stimulate interest in reading, develop imagination, and provide aesthetic elements. Therefore, comics can be used as a communication medium to convey stories and moral messages to readers and build character and digital literacy. This research aims to explain the role of comics as a medium for building character and digital literacy in the stories contained in the collection of children's comics published by Mizan and the Komik Next G series published by Muffin Graphics. Abstract

This research seeks to conduct studies related to the level of occupational attainment of vocational graduates correlated with the level of technical knowledge and family socio-economic status in Sidoarjo Regency. The sample taken was 100 respondents with the criteria of having graduated from SMK for more than 3 years and having worked or had worked. This study produces several results. First, technical knowledge and family socio-economic status have a significant correlation with occupational attainment of vocational school graduates. Second, occupational aspirations have a significant contribution in strengthening the previous two correlations. This result suggests that the level of technical knowledge and family socio-economic status remain the main variables contributing to the level of occupational attainment. However, the level of occupational aspirations is an important factor to develop in order to stimulate better occupational attainment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the vulnerability of female workers in a patriarchal culture, specifically Ladies Companions (LCs) in the Karaoke TV (KTV) industry in Surabaya. This research focuses on two research questions: (1) How do power relations operate between KTV management, customers, and LCs? (2) How do these power relations discipline and control the female body in this context? This research employs a qualitative approach to analyze the power relations within the industry, drawing on Michael Foucault's theory. Data was collected through literature reviews, in-depth interviews, and observation. The findings of this research are: (1) Female workers, or LCs, occupy a powerless position within the power relations. The management, as the employer, holds authority and power over its employees, compelling them to serve customers (mostly adult men). (2) The management commodifies the bodies and service capacity of LCs to serve, assist, and entertain customers. Customer demands include female assistants who are hospitable and attractive women wearing sexy outfits, representing the ideal image of an LC. Management has the authority to supply and exploit LCs to provide adult entertainment. This power relation extends beyond a typical business relationship and demonstrates that being an LC is a profession that is extremely vulnerable, unsafe, and degrading to women's dignity.
