Abstract

Diplomacy and communication between countries have real implications for intercultural encounters, and this position must be seen as an event that is not value-free. Indonesian people residing in China, primarily students, have informal tasks with a national mission, which plays an essential role in cultural communication and cultural diplomacy. They are Indonesian students who have artistic abilities and every year they always put on performances, one of which is dance performances. This study describes how a traditional dance from Papua, Yospan, can be used as diplomacy between Indonesia and China. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach; each data obtained will be analyzed using international communication theory and soft diplomacy. This study found that traditional dances and literature in cultural missions are one of the tools of cultural diplomacy that can be used to change the stereotypes and prejudices of foreigners about Indonesia. The conclusion in this study shows that in international communication, traditional culture is a powerful way to build diplomacy. Therefore, this study recommends that the government supports Indonesian students in establishing Indonesian cultural centers in various friendly countries where Indonesian students study.

Abstract

This article examines the problem of the literary composition of Laksita Jati music as a script for the final assignment of postgraduate students in the art creation program of the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Surakarta. The focus of the study is centered on whether the final project text is part of the aesthetic practices of the co-operative aesthetic or adds weight to the music created? As intellectual property, the manuscript is one of the graduation conditions whose values are parallel to the work itself. With such importance, ideally, the music creation script should be able to describe the entire process until its production is comprehensive. In other words, this art creation script must be able to reflect the quality or weight of the work presented. However, if judging from the standardized system and format of writing, the text may be a fetter of creativity (cooperative regime) for creators who have a personal aesthetic orientation and vision. The assumption is that by referring to a systematic writing format often traps the writer to get absorbed in formalistic writing rules rather than writing the substance of his work itself. The author, in this case, is more concerned with the structure of writing than on content. Another argument is that if we look at the contents of the script, which is a reflection of overall performance, it is not impossible to be used to see the quality of music that students create. This study uses Bartes' synchronous and semiotic acceptance method, "Death of the author." to analyze and overcome the problems in this study. The result, besides showing how the values (taksu) of Laksita Jati music, also revealed the existence of a little aesthetic regime practices in writing scripts for the creation of art.

Abstract

Pejaten pottery is one of the aesthetically unique potteries. The pottery has various ornaments such as god ornaments, god weapons, barong, and animals and plants. These ornaments are often found in Hindu worship ceremonies. This shows that, aesthetically, Pejaten pottery cannot be separated from Hindu aesthetics, so it is interesting to study. The problem is how the implementation of Hindu aesthetics in Pejaten pottery works and how Hindu aesthetics is used as a strategy for preserving Hindu aesthetics in Pejaten pottery. This study aims to determine the basis for applying Hindu aesthetics as a strategy for preserving Pejaten pottery. This qualitative research took the location of Pejaten Village, Kediri District, Tabanan Regency, Bali. Data were collected by direct observation, interviews, and also collecting literature data related to Hindu aesthetics. The aesthetic analysis process of Pejaten pottery is carried out using the concepts of Rwa bhineda (balance), satyam (truth), sivam (holiness), sundaram (beauty), and Pangider Bhuana (Pangider-ider). This study indicates that the ornaments and various forms of Pejaten pottery have a strong Hindu philosophical foundation, and this shows the religious nature of the Pejaten pottery craftsman. The conclusion is that the religiosity of the Pejaten pottery craftsmen is very influential in their creative process, and this is significantly able to maintain the preservation of the Hindu aesthetics of Pejaten pottery, Bali

Abstract

Komunitas Lima Gunung (KLG, the five-mountain community) was founded in 2002 by Sutanto Mendut—a well-known budayawan (cultural practitioner). KLG refers to communities living in areas of the five mountains of Magelang, Central Java that together join into one single organization, the KLG. Those mountains are the Mount Sumbing, Merbabu, Andong, Merapi, and Menoreh. Sutanto Mendut, the president of KLG, builds the community with the characteristics of what Victor Turner may call communitas, which is traditionally inherited in the calendrical ritual performances of KLG in which those groups of people continually re-articulate and re-contextualize their worldviews and social norms and orders. This research examines those ideas of communitas as forged in the KLG. This research was conducted through fieldwork: participant observation and unstructured interviews. Data were collected by participating in and documenting several activities (performances). “Meanings” of those performances were gathered through a series of unstructured interviews with practitioners that included Sutanto Mendut himself, leaders of the communities, and many members of the KLG. This research is indebted to theories of performance studies to analyze those collected data. The results of this study indicate that first, society emerges through ritual performances that create moments of liminality. This moment is the result of the re-articulation of the anti-norms/social order structure/structure. Second, Sutanto Mendut, through the Land Oath, re-articulated the sense of togetherness of KLG to become the Five Mountains Festival (FLG). Third, KLG is the strength of the community; members learn about freedom and are not dependent on established social structures. They are free to feel the moment of togetherness.

Abstract

Bongkel is the music of a farming community that developed in Gerduren Village, Purwajati, Banyumas, Central Java. This music only uses a four-tone slendro tuning. The current condition is that it is very difficult to find bongkel players; if there is no tracking of information about the history of bongkel, then in the future, it will be very difficult to find important information about bongkel. The purpose of this research is to trace and document the bongkel, from the side of its early history to its musicological review. The research method used is observation and interviews to explore oral sources. The use of oral sources is done because, until now have never received written data that specifically discusses bamboo music, especially in the Banyumas language. The interview focused on Kasmudi, Ibu Kunes, Maryadi Kresek and several other informants who were selected as sources, especially Kasmudi (a bongkel player) because he was the perpetrator the main witness. Kasmudi is the fourth generation of his entire family, which is a bongkel player on average. There are three types of data analyzed, including the history of the appearance of the bongkel, organology data, and musicological data. The grouping of data is done based on the three types of data, and the analysis is done by referring to the grouping of the three types of data. The results of this study found that the strongest characteristic of bongkel music is the imbal technique; besides that, bongkel is one of the musical instruments that became the forerunner to the development of angklung buncis, krumpyung, and calung music. The contribution of this research provides important information for the interest of Banyumas musical studies, especially for the development of bamboo music

Abstract

Carpets are the most important and most famous handicraft item from Afghanistan. There are various patterns of carpet weaving in the provinces of North and Northwest Afghanistan. The development of carpet patterns in Afghanistan is very dynamic. In the past, traditional carpets contained stories, beliefs, and prayers. These patterns have adapted to the social, political, and cultural conditions of the Afghan people. This has led to a change in the Afghan carpet pattern. The problem is how the pattern changes occur, what is behind the changes. This research intends to reveal this problem. The method used is qualitative—data obtained from collecting visual data from carpet artisans. Data grouping consists of traditional and modern visual carpet data, and then the data is analyzed using a visual ethnographic approach. The assumptions made in this study are that the patterns and designs of Afghan rugs that started before the alphabet, until the Afghan war conflict or until now, are caused by the craftsmen's closeness to the problems they face and their life trends, which are influenced by the socio-political conditions of the country. The duration of the war in Afghanistan has affected many things, including the design of the carpet pattern. It can be seen that the patterns of soldiers, helicopters, and weapons are found in the creation of the carpet. This study concludes that this change in pattern occurs due to psychological pressures caused by war. The massive displacement of the Afghan population outside the country, and in the country where they come, has the effect of forming a new pattern. The way a carpet engraver makes a pattern change is by creating a pattern unit, repeating the design, and cultivating the pattern organization system. The changes were made as a result of the interpretation process carried out by Afghan carpet craftsmen

Abstract

Motivation can be a driving force within students that gives rise to learning activities, which ensures continuity of learning activities and which gives direction to learning activities so that the desired goals of the learning subject can be achieved. Students who have strong motivation will have much energy to do learning activities. The results of learning activities will also be optimal if there is the right motivation—media in education functions as a means to achieve learning objectives. Therefore, the information contained in the media must be able to engage students, both mentally and in the form of real activities, so that learning can occur. The use of media in learning in elementary schools can affect student motivation, and the findings evidence this. Differences in learning motivation in thematic learning between the experimental class taught using the learning media of children's songs and the control class taught using classical music learning media, which is seen from the average score of the experimental class at 77.35 and the control class 68.00. From these results, the average experimental class was higher than the control class (77, 35 68.00).
