Abstract

This narrative inquiry study aimed to explore teachers’ views of their professional development practices. Qualitative studies are used to truly comprehend through “thick rich” descriptions what's happening (or not) from the standpoint of the English teacher in reference to their professional development practices and related impact on student outcomes. This study involved a purposeful sample of 3 English teachers of Senior High School level in Kabupaten Kupang, acknowledged by the chairperson of the English teacher working group of Senior High Schools in Kabupaten Kupang, (MGMP/Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris SMA Kabupaten Kupang) as “committed” to a life-long love of learning and to applying new knowledge gained from professional development practices into their classrooms. These teachers reflected on the experiences they valued, how they employed their learning to support student-learning outcomes, the types of support they obtained, and the barriers they faced. The findings of this study show that teachers value professional development experiences that improve their teaching skills and offer applicable and practical knowledge. To be successful, teachers believe that they need more time to continue informal dialogue with colleagues while applying new learning. Additionally, to support colleagues, teachers benefit from the further assistance provided by internal coaches. Teachers experience barriers related to lack of time and sense of ownership, preconceived opinions, inadequate training, and management of non-compliant student behaviors. In reference to student outcomes, these teachers mainly used their observational skills rather than formal assessments to evaluate the impact of new teacher learning on student outcomes.

Abstract

In this article, we argue that our students at any level, that is, from primary to tertiary institutions, must have good competences concerning critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication, contemporarily known as 4Cs, namely, four major competences of the 21st Century, while they are in schools because they need those kinds of competences to succeed beyond those educational institutions. It is, therefore, crucial for our teachers, including lecturers, to always train their students in such a way that their mastery of those crucial competences is excellent when they are in schools in accordance with their levels of formal education. It is believed that having great competences as such in schools helps the students, among other things, successfully solve any problems they face when they live their real lives in their society after their formal schooling. In other words, those who fail in their real lives after formal schooling are those who have poor competences in relation to critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. So, making sure that our students have excellent competences on critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication, when they are in schools, is necessary for them to succeed in their lives after their formal schooling.

Abstract

In this essay, five major writing teaching approaches are described. The first is the controlled-composition approach. In this approach, writing is taught to improve students’ non-writing skills, that is, speaking, listening, reading, and other language aspects such as vocabulary and grammar. The second is the current-traditional rhetoric approach. In this approach, the aim is to improve students' writing by focusing on language components that are important to becoming a writer, including vocabulary, sentence structures, paragraph structures, and essay development. The third approach is the process approach, which views writing as an individual process. In that sense, the intervention of writing teachers in the teaching of writing should be minimal, if not absent altogether, unless student writers want their teachers' help in writing. The fourth approach is the genre approach. In this approach, writing is seen as a social phenomenon in which certain models of writing must be well-mastered by student writers so that they can later produce them within their society. The last is a contextual approach which combines both process and genre approaches. In this approach, the teaching and learning of writing are based on the writing teachers' analysis of their students' potentials, interests, and needs in writing. It is suggested that the contextual approach be applied in our schools because it is more relevant along our students' journey to becoming great writers.
