Abstract

The development of digital technology, especially the smartphone, has a tremendous impact within all persons and structures of society, including the seminarians and their formation in seminaries. They can no longer withdraw and refuse to utilize the various facilities or applications provided by smartphone. Instead, they must learn to use it appropriately, wisely and competently, sharpened by appropriate theological insights that reflect priestly spirituality based on a constant dialogue with God. This requires them to have discretionary skills regarding the use of smartphone. Using a quantitative and qualitative methods, this research focuses on the understanding and experience of discretion in using smartphone among the seminarians in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, based on John Cassian’s thoughts on discernment. The result shows that among the seminarians there is a gap between their understanding and their practice on discretion. On the one hand, they understand very well what discretion is and how it should be applied in using smartphone. However, on the other hand, they often do not practice it so they are easily distracted. This research, therefore, recommends that digital discernment skills among seminarians, both personal and communal, need to be continuously improved during their formation years.

Abstract

The book of Amos, chapter 4:1-3, illustrates Amos's strategic choice in rebuking the government officials who indulge in luxury. Amos compares these elites to the cows of Bashan. Through rhetorical critique of that passage, this article aims to analyze the motives why Amos deliberately uses the metaphor the cows of Bashan. Amos wants his criticism that he conveys to be right on target to his interlocutors. He recognized that his interlocutors were not ordinary people; they were part of the elite class accustomed to luxurious lifestyles. Taking advantage of their husbands' high positions, they enriched themselves while turning a deaf ear to the grievances of the common people. Therefore, this article believes that through the metaphor of the cows of Bashan and the hook punishment, Amos makes a sarcastic satire because it is seen as effective in touching upon the sensitivities of these government officials. Amos chose the metaphor of the cows of Bashan also because of the socio-geographical context that is very close to their lives. Through this sarcastic satire, Amos successfully conveyed his theological message cleverly: that God does not remain silent in reproaching anyone who disregards the marginalized and oppressed.

Abstract

Ibn Arabi was one of the great Islamic thinkers who lived between 1165-1240 AD. He was known as one of the highest Sufi master (mystic) in human spiritual achievement with title Sheikh al-Akbar (Doctor Maximus or The Great Master). Using the library research, this article aims to explore and find the contribution of Ibn Arabi’s Sufism-philosophical thought and find its relevance to realize the perfect human being, equipped with rational faith. The results show that Ibn Arabi succeeded in “marrying” philosophy with Islamic teachings so that he can be categorized as a Sufi-philosopher and his thought has a Sufism-philosophical character. This style of thought is very relevant to help modern people who have a tendency to separate faith from ratio. For Ibn Arabi, human perfection lies in being together with God. However, this togetherness with God must be understood and lived rationally. In other words, a perfect human being is one who believes in God rationally.

Abstract

This paper explores the motivations and perceptions of God among Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong, focusing on their unique experiences and faith struggles. The study, guided by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), is based on the narratives of five female migrant workers with 6-12 years of experience in Hong Kong. From our study, compassion is identified as a fundamental motivator for Indonesian migrant workers. The study finds that all respondents maintain a positive God-Image, perceiving God as their Helper, Caregiver, and source of strength. Their faith is identified as a core motivation for survival. The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is employed to illustrate this approach. Finally, this paper tries to contribute to offering a unique perspective on the lives of Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong, emphasizing the critical roles of compassion, faith, and a positive God-image in their experiences, and promoting a fresh approach to addressing their struggles.

The women experience this marginalization rationalized by the patriarchal system which is persistent and enduring even to this day. The role of the patriarchy system has resulted gender-inequality system that subordinate women in Toba Batak society. The Toba Batak patriarchal system is implemented in all aspects of life such as myths, rituals, organizations, leadership, and kinship systems. Abstract

The research focuses on social cohesive elements in the Focolare movement in Indonesia which attribute unity to their surroundings. Inclusion, a sense of belonging, recognition, and active participation create bonds among its members and sympathisers. The Focolare movement attracts those who strive to minimise every division to achieve its goal “may all be one” by collectively living the spirituality of unity despite their varied identities and experiences. This research seeks to understand the definition of unity which puts Focolare as one family. It aims to recognise how members’ engagement and participation enhance mutual understanding, empathy, and respect, to create unity. This unity is seen as a social cohesion in the society, within and outside the movement. The case study is conducted on a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews, with people of three religions who practise Focolare spirituality in their daily lives in Indonesia. The research finds several relational paths which help the creation of unity in Focolare, resulting as instruments for unity. The paths take form in three cohesive elements; social relations, identification, and participation toward common goods. The acknowledgement of other religious traditions and the reflection on seeing the world as one family enable the acceptance of shared values. Those who are willing to work toward unity underline the importance of inclusion, the sense of one family, recognition of differences at open forums, and concrete programs of formation in and among religious communities. It later encourages the intercultural and interreligious relation toward cohesion in the society of diverse Indonesia.

Abstract

Employed within the Batak Toba community, Mangongkal Holi represents a longstanding tradition that continues to be actively practiced. Functioning as a unifying element, this tradition fosters cohesion amongst the geographically dispersed Batak Toba people across Indonesia. Through a combined approach of literature review and interviews, this research delves into the concept of divinity inherent within Mangongkal Holi. The author's meticulous analysis unveils Mangongkal Holi as more than just a ceremonial practice; it serves as a profound expression and reflection of the human connection to the divine. This tradition embodies esteemed values such as reverence and dedication towards the Creator, while simultaneously reinforcing the bonds of fraternity among the Batak people scattered throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

Some Javanese Catholics still practice the mitoni tradition when a mother is seven months pregnant with her first child. It is believed that by carrying out this mitoni tradition, the birth process will be smooth and the mother and baby will be safe. Javanese Catholics often question whether or not mitoni is allowed according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. In this particular topic, the theological question arises as to whether it is still necessary to seek salvation through rituals, while salvation has been fully fulfilled through Jesus Christ and received in the Sacrament of Baptism. In answering this theological question, the author uses the literature study method as his research method.  The approach chosen to discuss the relationship between the mitoni tradition and the sacrament of Baptism is the pastoral circle method from the theory of Joe Holland Peter Henriot. Meanwhile, to analyze the mitoni ritual, the author uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. From the results of the analysis, noble values were found behind the mitoni tradition that are in line with Christian values. After these values are further examined with systematic reflection on the theological meaning of baptism, it is concluded that the mitoni tradition is very close to the tradition of baptism in the Catholic Church. Therefore, the mitoni tradition that is still carried out by Catholic Javanese can be preserved with some adjustments in accordance with the Catholic tradition.

Abstract

This study focuses on the problem of proving the existence of God, offering a review and analysis of Thomas Aquinas' arguments. Aquinas' arguments are presented within the broader framework of theological knowledge, characterized by a highly systematic and detailed approach to proof. Additionally, this paper discusses the perspectives of several scholars who have examined and interpreted Aquinas' arguments on the existence of God. While some of their perspectives share similarities with Aquinas' reasoning, they also introduce differing elements based on their respective viewpoints. This research employs a library-based methodology using hermeneutic phenomenology, which involves collecting, analyzing, organizing, and interpreting relevant literature as well as reflections on faith in God. The primary sources of this study include Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, while secondary sources provide further context and analysis. The findings of this study indicate that the concept of analogy in Aquinas' argument serves to illustrate a new mode of action that transcends the hierarchical levels of created beings. Aquinas begins his reasoning from a horizontal perspective and subsequently shifts it to a vertical dimension, unveiling a spiritual aspect that revitalizes both life and faith in God.

Abstract

Every year, there is one Sunday to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This means that every year, priests have the opportunity to give a homily or sermon in order to explain for their flock the meaning of the Triune God. With a 10-minute time limit for homilies set by Pope Francis, it is important for preachers to find a balance between simple delivery and rich theological reflection. How to do it? This research analyzes Pope Francis' sermons and homilies on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, over a period of 10 years (2013-2023), to understand how the Pope offers a theological synthesis of the Triune God concept. This research consists of three parts: collecting and reading the Pope's sermon as primary data, processing and analyzing it in-depth, then finally figuring out the theological influences to the Pope's views and teachings about the Holy Trinity, especially Ignatian spirituality. This research shows that Pope Francis offers a balanced and easy-to-understand reflection on the Triune God, Christology, and soteriology. From the Pope's sermons, preachers are reminded to ensure a grounded experience of the Trinity in the lives of the faithful, making the theological concept transformative and at the same time relevant.
