Abstract

Background: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are a common cause of death in Indonesia, with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) being one of them. Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce insulin, or it is a chronic condition where the body cannot effectively use insulin, leading to increased blood glucose concentration or hyperglycemia, which is a characteristic of diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus has been increasing year by year, causing serious health issues in both developed and developing countries.Purpose: To identify the relationship between family support and injury incidents in patients with DM in the working area of the Cibiru Community Health Center, Bandung City in 2023.Method: This study is correlational in nature, utilizing a quantitative method conducted analytically and observationally, with cross-sectoral data collection. Chi-square analysis using Bivariate Test was employed, with a total of 40 respondents. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 59.5 with a standard deviation of 8.108 in the range of 45-75 years. The age group of 46-60 years constituted 55.5%, while the age group of 60-75 years was 45.0%. About 82.5% had high family support, 12.5% had moderate family support, and 5% had low family support. The bivariate analysis yielded a p-value of 0.027 when correlated with the occurrence of injuries. Thus, there is a relationship between family support and injury incidents in diabetic patients. Conclusion: Family support significantly influences the management or care of DM patients to minimize the occurrence of injuries.

Abstract

Background: Discussion about sexual and reproductive health issues among teenagers and parents is still shadowed by taboos in some cultures. Ignorance and myths surrounding these issues make teenagers vulnerable to the consequences of inappropriate sexual behavior, which in turn exposes them to risky behavioral problems. The lack of knowledge regarding teaching strategies used to educate teenagers can result in their indifferent attitudes and decreased motivation in receiving educational materials.Purpose: To determine the characteristics, age, gender, participants knowledge levels regarding adolescent reproductive health, and the influence of leaflet and booklet media on the level of adolescent reproductive health knowledge.Method: A quantitative research using a quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only design. The sample consisted of 50 teenagers divided into 2 intervention groups. The media used for education were booklets and leaflets. Results: The analysis results for the booklet group with a mean of 67.48 ± 14.060 and the leaflet group with a mean of 54.20 ± 6.331 yielded a ρ-value of 0.001. Therefore, there is a difference in the impact of health education intervention on the level of reproductive health knowledge among teenagers. Conclusion: Providing education using booklets can be one of the more effective educational strategies.Suggestion: Both adolescent boys and girls are encouraged to properly maintain their reproductive health and participate in every available health education activity to enhance their knowledge and health status.

Abstract

Background: The PICO framework is frequently applied to formulate question for conducting literature searching in the evidence-based practices (EBPs) development. However, students experienced challenges in fitting the clinical questions into PICO's format. In Indonesia, the EBP was mostly taught conventionally through lectures and discussions. There was no specific evaluation for assessing the accuracy of the PICO formula. Previous studies indicated that incorporating visual art in learning effectively improves students' observation skills, self-confidence, communication skills, and promotes transformational learning.Purpose: To describe the implementation of the PICO game and visual art as an EBP learning method and evaluate the accuracy of the PICO formula and the visual art created by nursing students, including their perspectives on the applied EBP learning method.Method: This descriptive study was conducted at a secondary hospital in Sumedang District, West Java-Indonesia, in July 2023. Totally 53 nursing profession program (NPP) students of a University in Indonesia were voluntarily recruited as participants. They divided into 9 groups and received a description of how to play the PICO game and visual art for developing the PICO formula question. Each group required to develop PICO questions from the PICO trigger pictures and keywords on the PICO worksheets and to draw at least one visual art illustration from the developed PICO question. At the end of those sessions, they were also required to provide opinions on this EBP learning approach. The PICO question accuracy was assessed using the PICO formula observation sheet, while the visual art compatibility was measured using the visual art observation sheet. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and the students’ perspectives on the EBP learning processes were analyzed by identifying the topic mostly described. Results: There were 63 PICO formulas and 18 visual art illustrations. Most of the PICO formulas (93.7%) were identified as accurate. However, more than one-third (41.3%) of the PICO formula did not include the C (comparison) component. More than half of the developed visual art illustrations (61%) were inappropriately describing the developed PICO formula. Participants reported that using PICO Games and visual art was an interesting and fun approach that enhanced their comprehension of the PICO question formula, EBP, and improved their teamwork capacity. Conclusion: The PICO game and visual art learning method facilitates high accuracy of the PICO question formula and is perceived as an effective and interesting EBP learning method. However, as the “C” (comparison) is the PICO component mostly found uncompleted, it is important to elaborate more on this issue in the EBP learning session. It is also important to extend the duration of the EBP learning method to facilitate students drawing the expected visual art appropriately. Further studies are needed to further confirm and follow up on the findings of this study.

Abstract

Background: GERD is a gastrointestinal motility disorder characterized by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, causing typical symptoms such as heartburn (a burning sensation in the epigastric region), acid regurgitation (a bitter taste in the mouth), nausea, and dysphagia, which can lead to esophageal mucosal damage. Over the long term, it can result in complications like Barrett's esophagus. The prevalence of GERD in Asia was approximately 2.5%-7.8% in 2014, generally lower compared to Western countries. However, recent data indicates an increasing prevalence. Poor dietary patterns, such as irregular eating habits, consuming low-nutrient foods, excessive or insufficient food intake, can elevate gastric acid production and affect an individual's health.Purpose: To determine the relationship between dietary patterns and symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) among vocational high school students.Method: A quantitative study was applied using correlation analysis with a cross-sectional study approach. The research was conducted at Vocational High School Bojonegoro in January 2023. The study population comprised 305 students in grade 12. The sampling technique employed was purposive sampling, with a sample size of 74 respondents. The measurement tool for dietary pattern variables was the FFQ questionnaire, and GERD symptoms were assessed using the GERD-Q questionnaire. Data analysis techniques included univariate analysis to describe the frequency distribution of each variable and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and GERD symptoms among students. Results: Poor dietary patterns were found to cause GERD in 47 (97.9%) respondents, whereas good dietary patterns significantly minimized GERD; only 1 (2.1%) respondent experienced GERD symptoms in this study. The research resulted a value of ρ = 0.000 < α (0.05), indicating that the ρ value in this study was less than α (0.05) or below 0.05; thus, H0 was rejected. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between dietary patterns and GERD symptoms, with a correlation coefficient value of 0.542 (moderate) and a positive correlation direction. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between dietary patterns and GERD symptoms. The correlation coefficient analysis also showed a figure of 0.542 (moderate) with a positive correlation direction, indicating that better dietary patterns lead to fewer respondents suffering from GERD.Suggestion: It is advisable for students to avoid consuming spicy foods, fast food, fried food, and high-sugar food or beverages. They should pay more attention to a balanced diet and timely meals. Additionally, the school authorities are encouraged to establish regulations or advisories to cafeteria owners to refrain from providing fast food, nutritionally poor food, carbonated drinks, spicy food, and other items that may contribute to digestive problems among students.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia currently faces a triple burden of various disease problems, outbreaks of infectious diseases, and an increase in long-standing infectious diseases, new infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). A report released in 2020 by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the postponement of routine vaccinations resulted in approximately 80 million children aged less than or equal to 12 months being susceptible to diphtheria, measles, and polio.Purpose: To review previous research in analyzing the relationship between incomplete basic vaccination and the occurrence of vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) cases.Method: This study employed a literature review design, conducting a systematic review by selecting relevant articles pertaining to the research objective. The literature study selection process was adapted from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Inclusion criteria for this research encompassed originality, usage of both English and Indonesian languages, keywords covering basic vaccination, adverse events following vaccination, Integrated Healthcare Centervisits, education, and the role of Integrated Healthcare Centercadres. Results: Generally, community knowledge, attitudes, family support, and the role of cadres correlated with vaccination coverage achievement. However, some studies indicated no correlation between specific variables and the infants' basic vaccination status. To enhance vaccination coverage and client satisfaction, improving community knowledge, attitudes, family support, the role of healthcare workers and Integrated Healthcare Centercadres, as well as increasing vaccine availability and vaccination guidelines, are necessary. Conclusion: To improve vaccination coverage and client satisfaction, enhancements in community knowledge, attitudes, family support, the role of healthcare workers and Integrated Healthcare Centercadres, alongside increased vaccine availability and vaccination guidelines, are essential.Suggestion: It is advisable for the community to enhance knowledge, attitudes, and support for vaccination, especially among mothers and families. The active involvement of cadres in vaccination programs and public dialogue regarding the moral ethics of vaccination also need improvement.
