Abstract

This article explores the potential of using Hidden Object (Video) Games as a media to enhance students experience in learning English vocabulary among ESL learners. The role of vocabulary in ESL is essential and critical, and effective vocabulary acquisition is key in improving language proficiency. Hidden Object Games (HOGs), popular for their engaging and immersive gameplay, offer a different and unique opportunity to integrate challenging yet fun activity in vocabulary learning. Moreover, HOGs enhance students experience by providing immerse and context-rich environment that promotes repeated exposure to new vocabularies in meaningful contexts, hence complimenting retention and application. This paper will discuss the benefits of these games, such as increased engagement, as well as challenges like technological barriers. Finally, several suggestions on how HOGs can assist teachers in vocabulary learning will also be discussed. It is my contention that HOGs, when carefully planned and implemented alongside traditional instructional methods, can become an amazing ally to help teachers in improving class experience and ESL vocabulary instruction, offering an interactive and immersive platform for vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

Nowadays, one of the prerequisites for the virality of podcasts on social media is determined by the host's expertise in guiding the show by using the right language style and language choice. Research in the field of language style and language choice still explores the dynamics of conversation without looking at the application of translanguaging. Therefore, research is needed that combines translanguaging and language style in the context of social media. This research explores the relationship between translanguaging and language style in one of the episodes of Deddy Corbuzier's podcast with guests Vincent Verhaag and El Barack. The podcast received many viewers and likes, as well as a lot of positive comments. This research refers to the theory of language style to analyze how speakers adjust their language choices in a multicultural environment to achieve various communication goals. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, transcribing and analyzing data in the form of dialogues that appear in the podcast. The research results show the presence of seven translanguaging patterns, with the Indonesian to Code-Mixing (ICM) pattern being the most dominant, reflecting the natural integration of languages in informal conversations. In addition, the dynamics of language change were also found, indicating three types of language styles as described by Martin Joos. The most dominant language style is the casual style, followed by the Consultative Style and the Intimate Style. It can be concluded that this study indicates that language speakers adjust their speech style based on the audience, the topic being discussed, and the communication goals they wish to achieve. This research will help readers gain deeper insights into multilingual communication, particularly in the realm of digital media which shows that translanguaging can be used strategically to enhance clarity, emotional expression, and audience engagement.

Abstract

The study explores the impact of English movies on students' vocabulary acquisition in Indonesia, focusing on how students acquire vocabulary through their habits of watching English movies. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyses the relationship between movies and English language learning. The findings reveal that regular watching English movie improved vocabulary, particularly difficult words. Participants felt more confident using new vocabulary in daily conversations and understood the meaning of words contextually. Additionally, this study identifies several key themes that contribute to vocabulary acquisition: input experience and understanding, the influence of subtitles, challenges and strategies in understanding dialogue, visuals as learning support, reflection and learning experience, and the impact of the habit of watching movies. The findings support Krashen’s Input Hypothesis theory, suggesting that movies can be used as an effective learning tool to expand vocabulary. However, the study has limitations, such as its limited sample size and the focus on one movie genre. Future research should involve more diverse participants, explore different movie genres, and use mixed methods to obtain more comprehensive data.

Abstract

Students’s confidence in speaking English is a crucial factor in the language learning process, particularly for English as a foreign language (EFL) students. However, many students struggle to develo their confidence when contributing to their lack of confidence in speaking English. Using a qualitative approach with Miles and Huberman’s analytical method, data were collected through guideline-based interviews with four EFL students selected using purposive sampling. The findings indicated that low self-confidence among students is influenced by several factors, including mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and psychological and emotional states. These four factors are interconnected and collectively shape students’ perceptions of their speaking abilities. The findings highlight the need for greater attention to psychological aspects and the learning environment to support the development of students’ confidence in speaking English.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions and experiences in kinesthetic learning, particularly focusing on its challenges and benefits. Conducted at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar between November 2024 and January 2025, the research employed a qualitative approach through observations and interviews. The study aimed to understand how kinesthetic learning activities (KLAs) influence student engagement, motivation, and speaking development. Data analysis which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that students generally perceive KLAs positively, appreciating their interactive and engaging nature. Students reported higher levels of motivation and retention when movement and hands-on activities were incorporated. Active participation was evident in discussions, role-plays, and tasks requiring physical interaction, fostering a more dynamic learning environment. The use of props and physical movement significantly contributed to enhancing students' learning experiences and practical application of knowledge, particularly in maritime-related contexts. Despite these advantages, several challenges emerged. Some students experienced physical fatigue after prolonged movement-based tasks, though this did not significantly affect their focus. Limited classroom space was another obstacle, restricting students' ability to fully engage in KLAs. Additionally, the lack of sufficient tools and props hindered the effectiveness of hands-on learning. Overall, the study confirms that KLAs enhance student engagement and learning effectiveness, particularly in improving speaking skills and motivation. However, to maximize their benefits, educational institutions must address challenges related to classroom space and resource availability. Future research could further investigate the long-term impact of KLAs on skill development in vocational education
