Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' beliefs about teaching English at State Elementary Schools and the factors that shape teachers' beliefs about teaching English in State Elementary Schools. The type of research used in this study is qualitative descriptive research with the research subjects of English teachers in five State Elementary Schools in Polewali Mandar who teach English. The instruments used in this study were observations checklist, interviews, and documentation. The findings of the study indicate that teachers' beliefs about teaching English at State Elementary Schools that teach English in Polewali Mandar are predominantly using Body Movement Techniques to help these Elementary School children understand English vocabulary or commonly called the TPR (Total Physical Response) method. Teachers also have the belief that to teach English to Elementary School children is to use the PPP (Presentation, Practice, and Production) method, the next belief is that teachers carry out learning using the CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) method. The results of the study also show that there are two factors that shape teachers' beliefs about teaching English in five State Elementary Schools that teach English in Polewali Mandar. Both factors are in accordance with the theory of teacher cognition postulated by Borg (2006), two factors that are in accordance with this theory are the Schooling factor and the classroom factor. Researchers did not find any other factors that shape the teacher's beliefs. The beliefs of these teachers are easily adjusted to the classroom context for the current elementary school level and there are no limitations to applying these beliefs to their classroom teaching practices, or there is no difference between teaching practices and the teacher's beliefs

Abstract

The Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM) has been introduced as an effort to improve teachers’ performance by providing access to various teaching resources and professional development programs. However, how vocational high school English teachers perceive the role of PMM in enhancing their teaching practices remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate Vocational High School English teachers’ perceptions of PMM and its role in improving their teaching performance. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, and data were collected through an interview to some of Vocational High School English teachers selected using a stratified sampling technique based on employment status, namely PNS (Civil servants), PPPK (Government employees), and Honorer (Non-permanent teachers). Descriptive analysis was conducted to examine teachers' responses. The findings revealed that most teachers perceive PMM positively, particularly in terms of providing accessible teaching materials, many useful features, and facilitating the teachers to communicate with many teachers across Indonesia. However, some teachers have negative perception about the platform with some reasons. This study highlights the need for improved the platform to maximize its benefits for vocational high school teachers.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges and strategies experienced by English teachers in utilizing Wordwall as a digital assessment tool in a rural junior high school in Indonesia. While digital platforms are increasingly integrated into English language teaching, their application in under-resourced environments poses unique complexities. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study draws on in-depth interviews with two English teachers from SMPN 1 Tinondo, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were analyzed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s framework, revealing three major findings. First, infrastructural barriers, including limited internet access, shared digital devices, and inadequate training, significantly constrained the optimal use of Wordwall. Second, despite these limitations, teachers acknowledged various pedagogical benefits, such as increased student motivation, interactive assessment experiences, and alignment with competency-based curriculum goals. Third, teachers demonstrated creative adaptation strategies, such as rotating device access, using group-based tasks, and modifying content formats to accommodate technical challenges. These strategies reflect a high degree of teacher agency in overcoming contextual constraints. The study contributes to the discourse on digital assessment in rural EFL contexts by highlighting not only the technological and pedagogical dimensions but also the socio-cultural factors that shape implementation. The findings offer valuable implications for teacher training, policy development, and digital tool design tailored to low-resource settings

Abstract

Abstract

Student engagement is crucial for successful learning experiences, encompassing behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and agentic dimensions. In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, engagement directly impacts motivation, language acquisition, and academic performance. Among these, agentic engagement—where students actively control their learning—emerges as a critical yet often overlooked area. This study explores the impact of project-based learning (PjBL) on agentic engagement in EFL classrooms at MAN 1 Soppeng, Indonesia. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research reveals that PjBL significantly enhances students' agentic engagement, particularly in group discussions, responsibility, and independent decision-making. However, challenges persist, such as students' reluctance to communicate directly with teachers. The study found a strong positive correlation (R-value of 0.600) between PjBL and agentic engagement, highlighting the need for strategies that promote proactive student involvement. Future research should explore innovative learning methods and consider factors like family influence and cultural differences to deepen understanding of agentic engagement. These findings contribute to optimizing PjBL for greater student initiative and ownership, enhancing EFL education quality in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant transformation to the field of education. This study aims to review the impact of AI on learning innovation through a literature analysis. The findings indicate that AI contributes to the personalization of learning, operational efficiency, and the enhancement of educational accessibility. Technologies such as educational chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), and adaptive learning platforms create more interactive and effective learning experiences. However, the implementation of AI also faces challenges related to ethics, data privacy protection, the digital divide, potential algorithmic bias, and educators' readiness. Nevertheless, the role of teachers remains crucial in guiding students and fostering character values. The transformation of learning models through AI opens opportunities to create more inclusive and effective educational experiences, capable of transcending traditional boundaries and providing students worldwide with access to knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary developments.
