Abstract

This study compared the effectiveness of the Contextual Redefinition Strategy (CRS) and the Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts. Conducted at SMKN 2 Selayar with X TKJ as experimental class 1 (CRS) and X TKR as experimental class 2 (LRD), the research employed quantitative analysis using paired and independent sample t-tests with SPSS 23. The results showed a significant difference in reading comprehension between the two groups, with CRS demonstrating greater effectiveness (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05). CRS supported vocabulary acquisition and encouraged contextual prediction, leading to deeper understanding. In contrast, while LRD promoted active participation, it lacked explicit vocabulary instruction, which may have limited its impact. These findings align with prior studies, confirming that CRS is more effective in enhancing reading comprehension, particularly due to its focus on vocabulary development and contextual learning.

Using a mixed-method approach, this study combines qualitative and quantitative data to analyze the implementation of vocabulary teaching strategies effectiveness. Qualitative data were obtained through classroom observation, teacher and student interviews, and document analysis, while quantitative data were collected from pre-tests and post-tests conducted in class VII.1. The result of the study indicated that teachers used various methods, including Total Physical Response (TPR) and vocabulary memory games, supported by contextual learning tools such as multimedia and group collaboration. The strategies were adapted based on students' diagnostic results to accommodate diverse learning needs. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in students' vocabulary mastery after the implementation of these strategies, indicating their effectiveness. This study contributes to the understanding of dynamic and differentiated vocabulary teaching strategies in junior high schools and offers practical implications for improving English learning outcomes in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of portfolio assessment as an alternative evaluation instrument in the Basic Physics course. The main focus of this study is to analyze the quality of experimental reports and student reflection notes as part of the portfolio, as well as to explore the role of portfolios in supporting more meaningful learning processes. The method used is a quantitative descriptive approach, with the research subjects being 60 students of the physics education study program in the Basic Physics course. Data was collected through portfolio documentation, observations, and in-depth interviews. The results of the study show that portfolio assessment allows students to reflect on their understanding of concepts, compile experimental reports systematically, and show cognitive and metacognitive development more clearly. In addition, reflections written by students indicate an increase in critical thinking skills and learning awareness. Portfolio assessment is considered to be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of student learning outcomes compared to conventional evaluations. Therefore, portfolio assessment is recommended as an evaluation alternative that supports process-based learning and strengthening student competencies in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the relationship between self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies and English language mastery among senior high school students. Specifically, it investigates the overall effect of SRL on English achievement and identifies which specific SRL strategies serve as significant predictors of language proficiency. Using an adapted questionnaire from Magno (2010), SRL levels were measured among 400 students from grades XI and XII across Science and Social streams at X Senior High School, with a final sample size of 196 participants. Findings indicate that students demonstrated a high level of self-regulation in their learning, reflected in a mean SRL score of 2.83, and attained strong English achievement outcomes, with a mean score of 84.08. Statistical analysis confirms a significant effect of SRL on English achievement. However, the presence of heteroscedasticity prevented the application of multiple regression analysis, thereby limiting the identification of the strongest SRL predictors of English success. These results underscore the role of self-regulated learning in shaping academic achievement and highlight the need for further research into refining predictive models to better understand the impact of specific SRL strategies on language proficiency. Abstract

The purposes of this research were to discover the lecturer’s perception toward task-based language teaching in writing classroom, to describe how the lecturer use task-based language teaching in writing classroom and to discover the stduents’ perceptions about the impact of task-based language teaching on students’ writing achievement. This research was conducted at State University of Makassar in Makassar. This research used a qualitative method with a case study design. The technique of data analysis was carried out through the following steps: data reduction, data display and data verivication. The subjects of this research were lecturer who taught English writing and the 4th semester students at State University of Makassar. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interview and documentation. The results of this research showed that the lecturer faced some challenges when teaching writing using TBLT such as difficulty with students who lack vocabulary and lecturer has limited time to give feedback on students’ task. In the process of classroom teaching implementation, the lecturer prepares an RPS before present the material. In evaluating teaching writing, the lecturer evaluated students’ task by identify the grammar mistakes and provide feedback on students’ task. The students feel many benefits when teaching writing using TBLT method by the lecturer such as improving their writing skills and directly practicing their writing skills. The implementation of the TBLT method should be flexible and innovative in the lecturer's approach during the writing teaching and learning process in the classroom. In addition, the majority of students appreciate the benefits of this method and the lecturers who implemented it

Abstract

This study explores the implementation and challenges of hybrid learning in English for Business courses at a higher education institution. With the increasing integration of online and face-to-face learning modalities, hybrid education offers opportunities for flexible learning environments but also presents significant obstacles. The research employs a qualitative methodology, involving semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, to gather insights from four lecturers who specialize in Business English education. Findings indicate that technological barriers, including poor internet connectivity and low digital literacy, particularly in remote areas, pose major challenges. Additionally, fostering student interaction and engagement in the online components of hybrid courses is difficult due to platform limitations and passive participation. Lecturers employ strategies such as group tasks and interactive quizzes to enhance engagement, but face-to-face interaction remains critical for developing communication skills. The study also reveals that students struggle with information management skills in the online context, and despite lecturer interventions, they require continuous support to improve their research abilities. Moreover, educators face challenges in balancing the needs of online and in-person students and adapting traditional assessment methods to the hybrid model. The study highlights the importance of training, institutional support, and strategic planning in overcoming these challenges and optimizing hybrid learning for business education
