Abstract

Essential oil is a non-timber forest product commodity that has a high selling value. PT. Wirakarya Sakti (PT. WKS) is one of the owners of an industrial plantation forest (HTI) that plants Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. The utilization of this tree is only focused on wood for pulp production, so it produces leaf and bark waste. The E. pellita leaves are very potential to produce essential oils that have high selling value. However, the characteristics of essential oil from this E. pellita clones are still unknown. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the quality of eucalyptus essential oils from these clones. The leaves of E. pellita from clone tree 77, 361, and 364 in PT. WKS was harvested and distilled using the water and steam distillation method to produce the essential oil. After that, the yield of essential, physical and chemical characteristics was analyzed following the Indonesian national standards (SNI 06-3954-2006). The results showed the yield percentage of eucalyptus oil from 3 clone trees are 0.080–0.130%. The results of physical and chemical characteristics of essential oil showed: (1) eucalyptus oil color is yellowish-green, (2) it has a distinctive smell of eucalyptus oil, (3) the specific gravity between 0.900–0.907, (4) 80% solubility in ethanol shows 1:10 turbid, (5) cineole percentage between 39.65–41.13%, and (6) refractive index between 1.462–1.463. The data analysis showed that clone 77 has a higher quality compared to the others.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Forest and peatland fires in the tropics occur on a large scale and cause environmental damage in the lungs of the world. The flames on the burning peat mix with water vapor inside the peat and produce a lot of smoke. The carbon which was previously buried in the soil and stored in stands above it became exposed and united in the life and human environment. It is very important to know the total carbon stocks in peat to see its contribution as carbon sequestration and carbon storage in stabilizing the ecosystem for rehabilitating peatlands in the tropics which are the lungs of the world. This research is limited to the estimation of carbon stocks stored in peat and understorey soil at the rehabilitation site of the Orang Kayo Hitam forest park. The estimation of soil carbon stocks is carried out by measuring the depth of peat at 48 drill points that are systematically placed. The estimation of understorey carbon stocks is carried out by destructive sampling method on a 0,5 x 0,5 meter plot which is repeated 3 times. The results showed that the peat depth varied from 7,2 - > 10 meters. The mean of understorey carbon stocks is 7.74 tons/ha while the mean of soil carbon stocks is 33.183,67 tons/ha.

Abstract

The existential relationship between nature and humans can be assessed from the number of plants and animals species utilized to their family or its customs daily needs. The community around the Hutan Desa Beringin Tinggi Jambi Province which is classified as Malay ethnic and always lived side by side the forest is also suspected of having it. However, the close and important relationship is often not realized, so there is a concern that we will lose traditional knowledge and wisdom in natural resources utilization, especially wildlife in the future. Thus, research aimed to explore the wildlife species diversity utilized by communities around HD Beringin Tinggi is needed. Data collection was carried out by open interviews with the general communities who live and doing activities around the HD Beringin Tinggi purposively and ended until the data-saturated. Other interviews were also conducted with village institutions, adat institutions, and KKI Warsi NGO staff who active there. The results showed that the number of wildlife species utilized by the people living around the HD Beringin Tinggi was not enough compared to other communities in Jambi Province. Of the 18 species utilized, Symphalangus syndactylus and Argusianus argus should be the main attention because it has important implications for the protected species conservation.
