Abstract

Speaking as one of the productive skills is very important to be mastered by English language learners. However, teaching English in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has several challenges. Besides limited exposure to the language, another biggest challenge is that there are very few opportunities available for students to practice speaking in English. For this reason, SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Sukoharjo held an extracurricular activity which is called as English Conversation Club (ECC) activity in collaboration with the English Language Education Program of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga by involving eight of the lecturers as instructors and nine students. This activity which aims to improve students' English skills used peer tutoring as its method. This activity was carried out as many as 8 online meetings through Zoom. The results of observations done by the instructors on the role of speaking buddies during the 8 meetings showed that the problems that were often faced by students when practicing speaking in English could be solved through the involvement of speaking buddies. In this activity, the speaking buddies play several roles in various activity sessions, such as organizers, resources, language controllers, and prompters.

Abstract

Pangandaran Regency as a tourist area with a long coastline has enormous potential for marine tourism and fisheries. Unfortunately, this is followed by environmental pollution that occurs. Our program tries to offer the application of a circular economy to minimize this problem. This program uses a design thinking approach and involves fishermen from Bojong Salawe Village in counseling activities and discussions regarding the economic conditions of fishermen and the potential of natural resources that can be utilized for new sources of income. The results of the discussion provide information that fishermen in Bojong Salawe have economic problems during the lean season, so additional sources of income are needed other than fish catches. The application of the circular economy can be used to help fishermen increase their income given the fact that as many as 85% of fishermen are still in the productive age and as many as 53% of other fishermen still depend only on fish catches. In addition, information was obtained regarding the potential utilization of mangrove fruit of the type Rhizophora sp. to be reprocessed into a product to provide an opportunity for fishing families to earn new income.

Abstract

The abundance of mangoes during the harvest season, and the sour taste of the mangoes even though they are ripe and perishable in nature, the people of Kanje Village process the mangoes into sour. This tamarind is called Kaloko and is a mandatory spice used by the people in making Mandarese food, namely the smell of peapi. The problem found is that the mango acid produced is black in color making it less attractive and unfit for marketing. In fact, it is not uncommon to find that the acid that has been made is also moldy when stored for a long time. Overcoming this problem, the PKM team offers a solution to provide education and training on making mango tamarind which is attractive in color and resistant to fungus. The PKM method used is observation, education and practice of making mango tamarind. This activity was carried out in the homes of residents who often make mango sour. The PKM was carried out on Saturday, April 22, 2023, then the evaluation of the final result of mango acid was carried out on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. The results of the PKM showed that the community was able to produce attractively colored mango acid. This shows that this PKM activity has been successful because it is proven to be able to improve partners' skills.
