Abstract

Class IX students of SMP Negeri 4 Takengon generally find it difficult to understand the mathematics learning material contained in the school textbook, besides that the teacher also feels that textbooks as teaching materials still do not help students in learning both at school and independently, so it is very necessary to have other teaching materials that can overcome this. Therefore the researcher felt that this research was very suitable to be carried out. This Research and Development (R&D) research uses the Rowntree development model whose goal is to develop math modules with the STEAM approach on curved side space material that is valid and practical for use in junior high school mathematics learning. The development process consists of three stages, namely the planning, development and evaluation stages using the formative evaluation procedure from Tessmer. Based on this development stage, a mathematics module with the STEAM approach has been produced which contains curved side geometrical material and can be categorized as very valid (content validation 4.54 and media validation 4.75) and also very practical based on one to one evaluation (teacher response 96.96% and student response 98.97%) and small group evaluation of 92.11%.

Abstract

The background to this research is based on observations of students at SMP Negeri 6 Lembor, East Nusa Tenggara, where mathematical critical thingking abilities were still low. Data collection techniques include test results, interviews, and documentation. This data collection used critical thingking ability tests and interviews with twenty students from class 7B, even during the semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and concluding students' critical thinking skills in solving mathematical problems using the Blended Learning approach. The results showed that students with critical thinking skills in the 'low' category were only able to fulfill one indicator and did not fulfill all of them because they had not been able to understand the meaning of the problem, formulate concepts, write solutions, and draw conclusions properly and correctly. Students with 'medium' critical thinking skills can meet 2 to 3 indicators because they can only choose the right solution strategy but are still wrong and make mistakes in their calculations. In contrast, students with 'high' critical thinking skills meet all ability indicators—critical thinking. Because students can choose a solution strategy and give reasons related to the chosen strategy wholly and correctly, it can be concluded that as many as 80% can think critically in the 'low' category, as much as 10% can think critically in the 'medium' category, and 10% can think critically in the 'high' category.

Abstract

Mathematical modeling is the process of solving a problem in the real world by simplifying it into mathematical form. Mathematical modeling skills are very useful for students in developing knowledge and deepening their concepts. In learning, this ability is needed in solving contextual problems. However, many students have difficulty in simplifying problems into mathematical models, especially in the material of the Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV). Applying the Problem Based Learning model is one of the efforts to improve students' mathematical modeling skills. This research uses a quantitative approach and uses a Pre-Experimental Design type of One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This study involved all VIII grade students in one of the schools in Aceh Besar. 31 students were selected as samples, and random sampling technique was used. . The instrument in this study was a test question on mathematical modeling ability. Furthermore, one-party t-test was used to analyze the data obtained. The results showed that the Problem Based Learning model improved students' mathematical modeling skills on SPLDV material. It is important for teachers to continue to hone students' modeling skills by getting students used to solving everyday problems using mathematical models so as to improve students' mathematical modeling skills. Improving students' modeling skills is one of the strategies to develop students' mathematical problem solving skills which are the foundation of meaningful learning.

Abstract

This study focuses on using different cognitive styles to solve mathematical issues. Their cognitive styles can be observed when students work on mathematical problems involving mathematical representation skills. Furthermore, the analyst should assess the mathematical representation abilities of pupils at MTsN 1 Banda Aceh using the field-dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI) cognitive styles. A descriptive, qualitative technique is used. This study employs purposive sampling procedures and focuses on two pupils from class VIII-2, one identified as FD and the other as FI. Instruments utilized include representation skill tests, interview guidelines, and GEFT questions. Analyzing the research data involves data reduction, presentation, triangulation, and conclusion formulation. The research findings point to many conclusions: (1) FI students find it easier to understand issues, can provide better conceptual explanations, solve problems faster, and explain their solutions accurately. (2) FD students have more difficulty solving issues because they rely on teacher directions. Additional concerns include their failure to analyze and comprehend information and retain concepts from challenges effectively. It is envisaged that students will understand their cognitive types to improve their mathematical representation skills in math and other courses.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities of junior secondary level students in terms of each student's adversary quotient level. This type of research is qualitative research with descriptive methods. The data collection techniques used in this research were tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The participants in this research were three junior high school students in Bogor Regency. The instruments used in this research were an adversity quotient questionnaire, mathematical problem-solving ability test questions, and interviews. The results of the research show that there are several relationships between the adversity quotient and students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Climbers, campers, and quitters-type students have high, medium, and moderate mathematical problem-solving skills. However, the interview results show that quitters tend to give up easily when faced with complex problems. So that future researchers should study these findings further and increase the number of participants so that the research results are more valid.
