Abstract

Abstract

Background: The success of cataract surgery depends not only on surgical techniques but also on patients’ physical and psychological preparedness. Perioperative nursing education plays a crucial role in reducing anxiety, improving knowledge, and enhancing self-care abilities. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing education interventions on clinical and psychosocial outcomes in ophthalmic surgery patients. Methods: Systematic reviews are compiled based on the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Searches were conducted on PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Scopus (2021–2025) for quantitative studies (RCTs, quasi-experimental, pre-experimental) involving adult cataract surgery patients. A total of 92 articles were screened, leaving 8 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The methodological quality of each study was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. Results: Nursing education delivered through face-to-face, printed materials, videos, audio, and mobile applications consistently reduced preoperative anxiety, increased patient knowledge, improved coping mechanisms and self-care abilities, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Digital media, especially videos and mobile applications, were found to be effective and practical. Conclusion: Nursing education is an essential component of perioperative care for cataract patients, improving psychological readiness, self-care, and overall patient experience.

Abstract

The risk of heart disease and stroke can be reduced with adequate cardiovascular disease prevention, as outlined in the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 guidelines for modifiable health behaviors. This review examines the role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in CVD prevention trials across the United States. In the 24 clinical trials identified, our review emphasized the effectiveness of CHWs in improving health behaviors and outcomes, particularly for underserved populations with limited access to health care. CHWs were actively involved in implementing interventions, providing culturally sensitive education, offering health coaching, and supporting lifestyle modifications, such as increased physical activity and medication adherence. It is noteworthy that most studies focused on heart disease. Beyond the CHW's role in delivering behavioral interventions, training for community health workers (CHWs) generally includes disease-specific knowledge and communication skills. CHW training programs vary widely in scope and standards, with unclear role definitions and inadequate collaboration. To improve CHW-led preventive health care, it is recommended to develop a standardized training framework, define CHW responsibilities in clinical and research collaborations, and build sustainable community-academic partnerships. This action could significantly enhance the role of CHWs in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) disparities, thereby promoting more equitable health care.

Abstract

Service quality in public health centers (Puskesmas) plays a crucial role in shaping patient perceptions and behaviors, which in turn influence patient loyalty. In Samarinda City, declines in patient visits and the achievement of Minimum Service Standards (MSS) indicate ongoing challenges in primary healthcare services. This study aims to analyze the effects of perceived value and patient satisfaction on patient loyalty at Puskesmas. Using a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, the study involved 420 respondents selected through cluster random sampling and convenience sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability and were analyzed using path analysis. The results show that perceived value has a positive and significant effect on patient loyalty (β = 0.2405), while patient satisfaction demonstrates a stronger influence on loyalty (β = 0.3410). In addition, patient satisfaction mediates the relationship between perceived value and loyalty, whereas perceived value acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty. These findings confirm that patient loyalty is shaped not only by direct effects but also through reciprocal mediating relationships between perceived value and patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Abstract Prone positioning in spine surgery improves surgical exposure but is associated with significant ocular, neurologic, and pressure-related risks. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare yet devastating complication linked to compromised ocular perfusion during prone procedures. Prolonged prone positioning also increases the risk of perioperative pressure injuries due to sustained external pressure and immobility. Perioperative nurses play a crucial role in risk identification, safe positioning, pressure injury prevention, and early recognition of adverse events to minimize irreversible complications. This case report describes a 38-year-old woman who underwent cervical spine surgery in the prone position and developed sudden painless unilateral vision loss accompanied by incomplete cranial nerve palsies postoperatively. Perioperative nursing interventions focused on comprehensive risk stratification, safe prone positioning with appropriate padding and eye protection, prevention of pressure-related tissue injury, close hemodynamic monitoring, and targeted postoperative visual and skin integrity assessments. Despite prompt multidisciplinary management, visual recovery remained limited. This case highlights the importance of evidence-based perioperative nursing practices in reducing prone position–related ocular and pressure injuries, supports the implementation of standardized positioning and pressure injury prevention protocols, and underscores the need for continuous vigilance in perioperative clinical practice. Keywords: perioperative nursing; prone position; cervical spine surgery; postoperative visual loss; pressure injury prevention
