Abstract

This paper contextualizes the role of literature during the current state of Covid-19 outbreak. As representation of plague has been a stable in literature across time and space, reading literature about pandemic offers important insights in dealing with the changing period. This study offers a reading of ‘The Marque of Red Death’, a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe which dramatizes the outbreak of titular plague. Poe’s narration contextualizes the horrifying aspects of plague and also criticizes the social inequality concerning the ability of different social classes to cope with pandemic. Hence, this depiction asserts that ecological problem is inseparable with social problem and racial inequality. This study is conducted under ecocritical framework which emphasizes the reorientation of human and non-human relationship through the imaginary literature. The findings suggest that the non-human entity in form of plague is depicted as a disruptive force that abolish the progress of human civilization. This dramatization explores humanity to ponder their position in the world as a reminder of their mortality. The analysis suggests that during the troubled era of Covid-19 outbreak, reading representation of plague in literature can provide an idea with how people across time and space cope with pandemic outbreak.

Abstract

Intentionally or not, a conversation between two people or more is a common thing around us. This research will discuss the patterns of sequence organization in the conversation using the qualitative method. The data in this research were words, phrases, sentences in the form of spoken language taken from Youtube entitled "Blackpink Talks 'Kill This Love', Coachella & How They Formed" which premiered on April 17, 2019. The research findings describe the patterns of sequence organization in conversation which consist of adjacency pairs, preference organization, sequence expansion, repair, and topic management. From 1 There were 9 responses from SPP that showed preferred and 8 others indicated dispreferred and 4 repair sessions where all were initiated by other speakers. In addition, which only 1 denotes pre-expansion, 6 denotes insert expansion, and one more denotes post expansion. From the patterns formed in the conversation, finally FPP can bring the flow of the conversation and produce 8 topics FPP begins the conversation by asking about Blackpink performance at Coachella, then interspersed by discussing each member’s life, how their initial meeting, what is their motivation, and talking about songs and choreography.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how to improve students’ speaking ability by using Story Completion Technique. The writers applied Collaborative Classroom Action Research as the method of research, where there are four steps that must be followed, they are: planning, action, observation and reflection. In this research, the writers only conducted one cycle due to the fact that the result of the test has been successful. There are 30 eighth grader students of SMPN 1 Takengon as the sample of this research. The data were taken from observation and students’ speaking test in pre-test and post-test, then were analyzed quantitatively. The result of the cycle was described qualitatively. From the results of the research, it was found that using Story Completion Technique in speaking lesson was very enjoyable and it encouraged students to speak more fluently. It can be proven from the result of pretest and posttest, which showed that the posttest score is higher than that of the pre-test (2204 for the pretest and 1640 for the posttest). That means the pre-test score is 54.67 and the post-test score is 73.47.

Abstract

Advertisements become engaging media to introduce and promote products. Men as masculine creation become one of interesting visual to represent the product and engage the target market. This study aims to discuss the visual and linguistic elements in the advertisements. In addition, this study reveals the interplay of those elements to make meaning and masculinity portrayal in the advertisements. The data are Nivea Crème, Pond’s face wash, Versace Eros perfume, and Skechers shoes. The theory used in this study is visual images by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) and SF-MDA by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004), supported Generic Structured Potential by Cheong’s framework (2004). This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, it is in the form of words, sentences, and images. The result of this study indicates that the representation of masculinity is changing over time. Masculinity portrayal such as stylish, independence, actives in sport, and character such as adventurous, strong, calm, muscular body are found in the data. The producer uses process material with goal, attributive, circumstance to represent the product to the targeted market.

Abstract

This paper talks about Bhabha’s Mimicry’s idea in Orwell’s novel entitled Animal Farm. Postcolonialism theory is used to analyze the Animal Farm since the novel portrays the dynamic of animals’ lives after being freed from human colonization. Bhabha’s mimicry is utilized to demonstrate Napoleon and his pig family as the principal data that portrays animals that are imitating a human as a result of human’s colonization. The animal is known as the foe of humankind on the ranch that they live. Mimicry ideas utilized are Bhabha’s both ambivalence and term the same but not quite. Those ideas are practised to uncover the pig’s propensity and act that represents postcolonial discourse. The mimicry in Animal Farm begins with Old Major’s discourse that is contaminating all animals on the ranch with his feeling of inadequacy towards the man. It results in another form of colonization directed to the animals as the colonized.

Abstract

Advertisement is a public media to promote a product or a service. Shampoo advertisements, especially the ones made for women, always show the advantages that the product gives to the customers. This study construed beauty standard in shampoo advertisements through the visual and linguistic elements, and found the differences in how they construe the beauty standard. This study used four different brands taken from Cosmopolitan magazine from 2016 to 2018. The brands are Love, Beauty and Planet, Loreal Extraordinary Oil, Treseme and Garnier Fructis. This study used the Multimodality approach using two modes, visual and linguistic elements. This study used Generic Structure Potential by Cheong (2004) to divide the linguistic and visual elements, then used Kress and Leeuwen's visual grammar to analyze the visual element (2006) and used Halliday's metafunction to analyze the linguistic elements (1978). Then this study analyzed the interplay of the visual and linguistic elements to construe beauty standards in society using O'Halloran SF-MDA (2008). The study shows that all of the shampoo advertisements have different ways to construe beauty standard in society through the visual and linguistic elements.

Abstract

As a higher education institution that highlights the 21st education, Sampoerna University has encouraged the lecturers to do projects that give students opportunities to develop skills needed in Industry 4.0 so they can participate in global competition. Besides having the skills, the students must also have Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) to be able to participate in the competition and by knowing the importance of the skills and the competence, students of Sampoerna University participated in a collaborative project with students from Malmo University in Sweden. The project encouraged learners to develop their critical, creative and digital skills by collaboratively studying the city as text. The focus was on critical multiliteracy and the promotion of intercultural communicative competence through first-hand experiences of virtual exchange in cross-cultural groups. The objectives of this research are to find out how Intercultural City Stories project applies the elements of Intercultural Communicative Competence, to analyze how Intercultural Communicative Competence gives impacts for Cross Cultural Understanding, to observe how the digital outcome of multimodal narratives improves the understanding of Intercultural Communicative Competence and digital literacy and to identify the reasons why Intercultural Communicative Competence plays important roles in 21st century education and in literacy.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in 2020, teaching and studying activities commonly conducted in the classrooms were shifted to online, which caused students to adapt and accept without compromising. This study analyzed the dialogue texts expressing students' hopes and views about the future of learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic written by the Senior High School students of Nanyang Zhi Hui school in Medan, Sumatera Utara. The objectives are to analyze the mood, modality, and modality orientation types; and figure out the dominantly-applied mood, modality, and orientation types in the dialogue texts. This descriptive qualitative research applied the Mood and Modality theory by Halliday and other linguists. The study revealed that 1) three mood types: declarative, interrogative, and imperative, four types of modality: probability, usuality, obligation, and inclination range from low, median, and high degrees; four orientations: subjective-explicit, subjective-implicit, objective-explicit, and objective-implicit occurred in the texts; and 2) the clauses are represented through the extensive use of declarative mood (80,74%), median probability (47%), and implicitly objective modality orientation (45,15%). The study concludes that the students tend to give their insights using statements with median probability and orientation of objective-implicit in the dialogue, which shows a lack of confidence in the utterances.

Abstract

This study analyzes patriarchal hegemony portrayed in a dystopian world where young girls are hegemonized to fulfill patriarchal interests written by Louise O’ Neill, Only Ever Yours. As a counter to utopian writing, dystopian literature emerged as a subgenre of speculative fiction. The objectives of this study are to elucidate the kinds of patriarchal structures and media operated in portraying patriarchal hegemony in the novel. This study employs Antonio Gramsci’s hegemony theory along with the concept of patriarchy by Sylvia Walby. This study is literary criticism as the researcher interprets and analyzes the literary work. It employs a sociological approach for the analysis and Sylvia Walby’s six structures of patriarchy theory along with Gramsci’s theory. The data are taken from the words, phrases, and sentences in Only Ever Yours published in 2015. The researcher took the data by identifying, classifying and analyzing the data by elucidating the data with the theories. The result of this study shows that there are three patriarchal structures portrayed in the novel which are patriarchal mode of production, patriarchal state, and patriarchal culture. On the other hand, patriarchal hegemony is portrayed through the medium of television.

Abstract

There is little research on gender-related children's picture books in Indonesia. In this article, we discuss the disclosure of gender representation in a picture book entitled Perpustakaan Intan. The high number appearances of women, the actions pinned on women, and the clothes displayed in both text and images are materials for visualizing women and men. Previous studies have revealed that men dominate the number of appearances in books. However, this book displays women more often than men. On the one hand, this raises the question of whether this means women are in power, and on the other hand, men are portrayed as powerless. Utilizing the multimodality approach, the results show that although women appear more in the narrative, women are still represented as less powerful.
