Abstract

Natural peatlands are home to a wide variety of animals and plants and provide ecosystem services for humans and the environment. Peatlands in Jambi are still not appropriately managed, partly because of the lack of community knowledge regarding peat. This study reveals the knowledge and perceptions of junior high school students about peat, the factors that influence it, and its implementation in science learning. We conducted the study on 228 junior high school students and 21 science teachers in Tanjung Jabung Timur. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and focused discussions. Data were analyzed descriptively. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using Smart PLS to determine the relationship between students' background, perceptions, and interactions with their knowledge of peat. Students' knowledge of peat is in a low category. The level of student's knowledge is significantly influenced by their experiences (interactions) with peatlands and their perceptions of these resources. The student's family background does not affect students' knowledge of peat.

Abstract

Science learning is often associated with difficult topic to understand, lecture-dominated instructions, and low participation rate in classroom learning. Similar situation is observed at a secondary school in West Sumatra province, Indonesia. The observation also revealed that students’ cognitive learning outcomes is still under the minimum passing criteria for the topic of the earth's layer. To the citizen of an area that is in high-risk of natural disaster occurrence, sound understanding on the topic is crucial. Since science lesson is designed to develop students’ thinking and problem-solving ability, such understanding is important regarding students’ survival rate. If this situation remains unaddressed, it is concerning that achieving the goals of science lesson, especially related to the topic of Earth’s layer, will be constrained. Therefore, this study offers a solution by implementing the Cooperative Learning Index Card Match (CL-ICM) to see its impact on students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This quasi-experimental research used non-equivalent control group design andh purposive sampling technique to select 67 seventh graders from two classes as experiment and control group. A set of 20 multiple-choice questions was validated and tested for reliability as research instruments to measure students’ learning outcomes. Data was then analyzed with parametric statistics technique followed by hypothesis testing using independent sample t-test. The result of data analysis gave the sig. of 0.091, which led us to decide that the null hypothesis is accepted and research hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. Therefore, it can be summarized that the implementation of CL-ICM does not give significant impact on students’ cognitive learning outcomes on the topic of the earth's layer.

Abstract

The natural environment around students can become a learning object that provides students with real experiences. This research aims to determine the effect of the Exploring the Natural Environment (JAS) approach on (1) students' curiosity, (2) students' critical thinking skills, and (3) student learning outcomes. This research uses a quasi-experimental design. The population consists of seventh-grade junior high school students. Data collection techniques are carried out using tests and observations. Prerequisite tests are carried out using validation tests, homogeneity tests, and normality tests. The hypothesis analysis technique is carried out using the independent simple t-test. The research results obtained are, One, there is an influence of the JAS approach on students' curiosity with a sig-2tailed result of 0.011 ? 0.05, Two, there is no influence of the JAS approach on students' critical thinking skills with a sig-2tailed result of 0.080. This is because students still do not fulfill the six categories of critical thinking according to Facione, Three, there is an influence of the JAS approach on student learning outcomes with a sig-2tailed result value of 0.003 ? 0.05. This research concluded that the natural exploration approach (JAS) had an influence on students' learning outcomes and curiosity, but had no effect on students' critical thinking skills. The obstacle in this research is that the time used is still very limited, so better time management is needed.
