Abstract

The fundamental responsibility of government is to secure citizens life and properties. The ongoing terrorist activities and religious extremism in Nigeria is yet to receive the required attention from the government. In light of the growing influence of terrorism and religious extremism in Nigeria, the study adopted the relative deprivation theory, to explain possible causes of terrorism and the recruitment of terrorists. The paper examines the ideological variations among the terrorist groups, using the quantitative textual analysis of secondary data to evaluate and scrutinize the flip flop approach of the Nigeria government from 2015 to 2022 in combating terrorism and religious extremism in the country. Despite the response by government, insecurity, terrorism and religious extremism have not been defeated due to lack of political will and the inability of government to make good laws to sanction offenders, thus, endemic poverty encourages the spread of terrorism and religious extremism. The study recommend among others, the need for government to properly police the borders, religious or tribal nepotism should not be condoled and not until systematic corruption, bad governance, inter religious and ethnic rivalry aimed at the control of state apparatus for economic and political selfish gains are seriously addressed and curtailed. The paper suggests that acute poverty and relative deprivation are precursor to the serial insecurity and terrorism that Nigeria is facing today.

Abstract

By adopting the theoretical framework of Risk-Benefit perceptions, this study takes the popularization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) knowledge as an empirical object to test the key factors impacting on science communication effects in the WeChat official accounts. Results showed that science communication uncertainty produced both direct and indirect effects on science communication effects. The indirect effect was mainly mediated by perceived risk. Public trust negatively moderated the association between perceived uncertainty and perceived risk at a low trust level. Perceived entertainment had a positive effect on science communication effects in the benefit-perception perspective.

Abstract

The mental health of Nigerian employees in an organization is as important as their physical health at it allows them to focus on their jobs and aims at effective productivity in their organizations without any restrictions or restrains. A qualitative study approach was utilized through the use of structured interviews to explore the implications of Covid-19 on the mental health of those who worked from home and those who worked physically at their workplace. The study made use of 50 selected workers who worked at home and physically at work during the 2020 national lockdown in Nigeria. The study engaged the use of thematic analysis which led to the discussion of themes such as changes in work schedules, effects on mental capacity, exposure, adaptation, changes, and attitudes towards the lockdown. The study identified that there was a change in the mental health of Nigerian employees because they went through experiences that brought diverse perspectives to the way they view themselves and their work. It is recommended that people are equipped with psychological coping mechanisms to deal with unexpected situations and appreciate the significance of relationships with family, friends, colleagues at work, and speak up if they face any mental challenges.

Abstract

For over half a century, there has been ongoing debate among communication professionals and theorists about the need for localization or globalization in brand communication. Both sides have argued about the most effective strategy for global brands in the global market, with no clear consensus on the optimal approach. This paper aims to examine the impact of localization and glocalization on brand voice. A qualitative study design was used, based on a content analysis of case studies involving globalization, localization, and glocalization. The study is exploratory in nature and uses inductive reasoning. Through case study analysis, it became apparent that localized and glocalized brand communication and brand voice are influenced by various factors such as cultural background, religion, national beliefs, political environment, regional languages, media policies, political restraints, and socioeconomic conditions. These factors act as "filters" that may edit, clarify, censor, change, or leave brand communication unchanged. The author introduces the concept of a "filtration system" for localization and glocalization, which can be applied by multinational companies entering new markets to better fit the culture, habits, and values of the local area.

Abstract

This study aims to explore information related to the teaching pattern of religious tolerance, especially at the traditional Raju ceremony of the Mbawa Village community, Donggo District, Bima Regency. Mbawa residents are a diverse entity, both from religious and ethnic backgrounds.  There are three different religions believed by the local community, namely Islam (78%),  Catholicism (20%),  and Protestantism (2%); and there are three ethnicities they profess namely Donggo, Flores, and Ambon. This article uses qualitative research methods with a descriptive analytical approach that aims to explain field data systematically and accurately, especially regarding the pattern of teaching religious tolerance values at the Raju traditional ceremony of the Mbawa community. This article uses Yusuf Al-Qaradawi's thesis in his thought which emphasizes the importance of teaching the values of religious tolerance for a pluralistic society. According to him, the teaching of the value of religious tolerance needs to be given to the community intensively, without discrimination towards certain religions or ethnicities. This study also wants to explain the traditions and cultural heritage of the Mbawa people through Emile Durkheim's thoughts on the role of socio-culture in bonding the relationship between religious communities. Durkheim said that to unite a plural community there needs to be a social role in the unity of rituals and common beliefs held by all citizens.  This study concluded that the awareness of the Mbawa community to disseminate the values of tolerance in Raju traditional ceremonies through teaching patterns within families, educational institutions, and village and tribal government structures, succeeded in knitting positive relations between religious communities. Through the ceremony, residents also have a common awareness to coexist peacefully and nonviolently.

Abstract

Despite the benefits of work-life balance and the large number for studies it has motivated in developed nations, relatively little studies have been done on how it affects organisational commitment in Nigeria. This is because Nigerian businesses are known for endorsing unstable working environments and unethical workplace standards at the expense of the wider public. In light of this, this study examined the connections between organisational commitment and work-life balance in the Tin Can Island Port terminals in Lagos State. Purposive sampling was used in conjunction with the cross-sectional approach. The work enrichment theory served as the study's theoretical framework, and a questionnaire with 389 respondents was used as the research instrument. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23 was used to analyse the data using percentages, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's coefficient of correlation, and both linear and multiple regression analysis. The study's conclusions demonstrated how employees' affective, continuance, and normative commitments were impacted by work-life balance in Tin Can Island Port, Lagos State. The study came to the conclusion that employees' commitment to their organisation as well as their personal lives, are impacted by an inadequate work-life balance. Based on the study's findings and conclusion, the management of Tin Can Island Port should, among other things, develop and successfully apply flexible work schedules to help staff members manage and lessen the conflicts they encounter in their personal lives.
