Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, LINGUA also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, pragmatic, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, literary works, and discourse analysis

Abstract

Speaking is an effective language talent in verbal exchange that is incorporated collectively with the opposite language competencies consisting of listening, writing, and analyzing despite the grammatical, pronunciation, and vocabulary. This article aims to explain the concept of speaking skills, the implementation of picture series to retelling stories for speaking skills, and the advantages and disadvantages of the retelling story technique. The method of collecting data is through library research and documentation. The data were collected from books and manuscripts. The analysis of data used qualitative data analysis using Miles and Huberman's data analysis process by organizing the information, description, and interpretation. The results of this study show that retelling stories are useful for improving students' ability to speak English by using pictures to improve students' speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the types of translation shifts and translation procedures in the Garuda Indonesia: Colors magazine and its translations. The theory used was the theory of translation shift by Catford (1965) and the theory of translation procedures The results showed that in the Colors: Quiet Seoul magazine article, two categories of shifts were come across. Meanwhile, in the Colors: Explore Banyuwangi magazine article there were only Category Shifts found, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. In terms of translation procedures, this research indicated that in the Colors: Quiet Seoul magazine article, there were two translation procedures detected, namely: Adaptation and Borrowing. Meanwhile, in the Colors: Explore Banyuwangi magazine article (pp. 96-104), there were 11 translation procedures found, namely: Adaptation, Amplification, Borrowing, Calque, Compensation, Generalization, Literal Translation, Modulation, Particularization, Reduction, and Transposition.

Abstract

This research investigates the English Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers' and students' perceptions of learning interactions when teaching-learning was conducted online during the pandemic of covid-19. The interaction concerned in this study included students-student interaction, student-lecturer interaction, and student-content interaction. Purposive sampling is used to determine the respondents of this study. The data were collected from 106 university students of non-English education majors through a questionnaire in one of the universities in Semarang. Additionally, an interview is used to get in-depth information on the students' perceptions. This study is a case study using a qualitative approach supported by a quantitative approach. The result shows that students tend to perceive student-student and student-lecturer interaction positively. However, they perceive student-content interaction quite negatively.

Abstract

Protests in Nigeria have gained global attention in recent times and have attracted different explanations about their root causes. Violence may sometimes erupt because of protests; however, this does not usually happen until additional factors contribute to the protests. This study presents a Social Network Theory perspective on the agitation for #EndSARS among the Nigerian masses, especially the youths. #EndSARS is a movement against extra-judicial police brutality and a call to put an end to bad governance in Nigeria. This study was inspired by the following: (i) the rising popularity of social media in the present day; (ii) the worldwide increase in social media activism; and (iii) the diffusion of information by social media users. This study therefore employed the Social Network Theory in identifying the influence of social media on the diffusion of information about the #EndSARS movement and the sustenance of this movement over a long period, despite forces that have tried to silence the movement. This study argued that the sustenance of protests such as #EndSARS over a long period was dependent on factors such as: (i) that some individuals were more resistant to being influenced than others; (ii) that some individuals tended to be more responsive than others; and (iii) that some individuals seemed to be more affected than others (and were therefore more likely to pass information on to others). The findings revealed that protesters used emotional dynamics, collective identities, symbolic artefacts, and mutual values to sustain protests if their demands were not met on time.

Abstract

Penelitian ini diawali dengan menganalisis kebutuhan materi bahasa inggris guru Pendidikan Islam Anak Usia Dini Al Azhar Brebes, Bunayya Brebes, dan Pelita Bangsa dan hasil dari analisis menujukkan bahwa para guru sangat membutuhkan materi bahasa Inggris untuk mengenalkan bahasa inggris kepada anak usia dini. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah membuat materi Lexical Chunk untuk para guru dalam memperkenalkan bahasa inggris kepada anak usia dini. Lexical Chunk adalah kelompok kata yang ditemukan selalu bersama tetapi tidak menekankan penggunaan grammar. Penelitian ini menggunakan R&D dengan metode analisis deskriptif. Hasil rerata dari kebutuhan materi Lexical Chunk terhadap 30 responden adalah 4,83 (sangat membutuhkan), hasil dari resume latihan terhadapt 30 anak usia dini adalah 4,69 (sangat lancar) dan hasil rerata validasi ahli tentang materi Lexical Chunk adalah 99% materi Lexical Chunk termasuk kategori excellent. Dengan rerata tersebut dapat dikatakan bahwa materi lexical Chunk sangat dibutuhkan oleh para guru dan anak usia dini sangat lancar meniru dan mengulang Lexical Chunk. Dengan kata lain, materi Lexical Chunk efektif digunakan untuk para guru dan anak usia dini. Oleh karena itu, materi Lexical Chunk dapat digunakan untuk para guru dan anak usia dini di tempat lain.

Abstract

Language as a fundamental part to communicate with other people becomes crucial since it engages other disciplines. Many of the communication products are in English which might bring difficulties to understand or interpret the meaning due to the language variations. SFL can bridge the meaning and context which usually becoming a problem faced by the translators. This article aims to depict a brief concept of SFL and translation and attempts to figure out the relationship among linguistics and translation, especially the implementation of SFL in translation field. The article elaborates ideas from several experts in linguistics, specifically in SFL and translation. This revealed that SFL promoted by linguist named M.A.K Halliday linked and can be applied in translation. It is crystal clear that SFL also has a role in developing the theory of translation that can be proved by Juliana House in the book A Model for Translation Quality Assessment (1977) and Roger Bell in book entitled Translation and Translating: Theory and Practice (1991).

Abstract

This study aims to examine the turn-taking strategy for the same gender and mixed gender that occurred in the Mata Najwa Talk show, as well as to find out the gender pattern that is formed in Indonesia. The data were analyzed using the Have theory (2007) for the turn-taking strategy and Setiawan (2013) for gender patterns that occur in Indonesia. The findings demonstrate that: (1) In the same gender conversation, domination by certain party is rarely found. However, women when talking to their fellow women tend to use more turn-taking strategies in a conversation such as speak then ask, phrases of agreeing and disagreeing, phrases for asking for/giving opinions, and fillers of pauses. Meanwhile, when men talk to other men, the greatest value occurs in the phrase for asking for/giving opinions strategy. (2) In mixed gender conversation, it was found that when women talk to men, men are likely to dominate the conversation. Najwa Shihab as the presenter got less number of turn-taking than men in the strategy of using conjunctions, phrases of agreeing and disagreeing, and phrases for asking for/giving opinions. (3) This research also shows a pattern that occurs in Indonesia, which in this pattern shows that men tend to dominate when talking to women, and this rooted in the dominant gender construction in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstrak: Rewang merupakan tradisi yang masih dilakukan disetiap suku. Namun, rewang telah mengalami pergeseran didalam nilai budayanya sehingga makna budaya didalam tradisi rewang menjadi hilang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana tradisi rewang dilakukan dimasyarakat suku Jawa yang tinggal di Langkat. Adapun permasalahan didalam penelitian ini yaitu: Bagaimanakah tradisi rewang dilakukan dimasyarakat suku Jawa yang tinggal di Langkat? Penelitian ini menggunakan teori antropolinguistik. Penelitian tersebut menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data yang didapatkan adalah 4 orang ibu-ibu yang melakukan rewang dalam mempersiapkan acara arisan keluarga. Dari penelitian tersebut dapat disimpulkan jika tradisi rewang masih ada dilingkungan suku Jawa walaupun bukan tanah Jawa. Tetapi orang-orang yang melakukan rewang diberikan upah yaitu sejumlah uang sebagai pembayaran jasa yang dilakukan ibu-ibu tersebut. Kata Kunci: Tradisi Rewang; suku Jawa; Arisan Keluarga; Langkat

Abstract

Permainan daring atau yang biasa dikenal dengan istilah Games Online merupakan permainan yang sangat menarik dan sangat marak terutama di kalangan anak-anak. Bagi anak-anak terutama ini menjadi magnet yang luar biasa. Namun hal tersebut membuat anak-anak lupa akan dirinya bahkan sampai pergaulan, bahasa, dan kata-kata yang mereka komunikasikan sangat tidak layak untuk didengar. Hal ini dapat mempengaruhi kesantunan berbahasa pada anak-anak Tentunya, ini menjadi suatu hal yang menarik untuk dikaji dan diteliti. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh Games Online terhadap tingkat kesantunan bahasa pada anak usia 12 tahun, yang dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret 2022 dengan desain penelitian kualitatif. Subjek penelitian terfokus kepada murid bimbel kelas 6 SD di lembaga Brain Academy Medan by Ruangguru. Teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara dan observasi di kelas. Jumlah keseluruhan responden adalah 5 anak, yang terdiri atas 1 anak perempuan dan 4 anak laki-laki. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesantunan anak di dalam berbahasa dipengaruhi oleh banyak faktor. Salah satunya adalah faktor lingkungan. Lingkungan anak yang lebih sering dihabiskan dengan bermain game online menyebabkan anak anak tersebut menggunakan bahasa yang dipeoleh dari game online dalam percakapan sehari – hari. Kata – kasar baik dalam bahasa Inggris maupun dalam bahasa Indonesia banyak digunakan seperti ,Fuck you, damn, gilalah, anjing, anak pungut kau,bodoh, babi, . Oleh karena itu, peran orang tua sangat diperlukan agar anak dapat menghasilkan bahasa bahasa yang santun. Kebiasaan berbahasa santun perlu dilakukan mulai dari lingkungan keluarga.

Abstract

Tahun baru Imlek yang dalam bahasa Mandarin disebut 春节chūnjié merupakan perayaan terbesar dan terpenting etnis Tionghoa di Indonesia. Selama pekan Imlek (tanggal satu sampai tanggal lima belas kalender Tionghoa) banyak pantangan-pantangan budaya tabu yang harus diikuti masyarakat etnis Tionghoa. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji jenis-jenis tabu pekan Imlek berdasarkan unsur kebahasaan serta kaitannya dengan usaha menstabilkan perekonomian. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan unsur-unsur kebahasaan, tabu pekan Imlek dibagi menjadi beberapa macam, yaitu pantangan terhadap beberapa kegiatan yang tidak diperbolehkan, tabu terhadap makanan, tabu terhadap minuman, dan tabu pemberian hadiah. Sedangkan latar belakang sosial tabu pekan Imlek membuktikan bahwa selain melalui usaha profesional dengan bekerja, strategi untuk menjaga stabilitas perekonomian masyarakat etnis Tionghoa juga dilakukan melalui upaya kultural. Artinya, konsep makrokosmos juga ditekankan untuk mempertahankan bahkan meningkatkan kondisi keuangan. Hal ini berkesinambukan dengan konsep yin yang serta konsep Li (ritual) yang merupakan hasil pemikiran filsuf Tiongkok Konfusius dan Taoze.
