Abstract

This study analyzes the associative social interactions of purse seine fishermen in Yainuelo Village, Amahai District, Central Maluku Regency. This area is rich in fishery resources, with most residents relying on fishing as their primary source of livelihood. Social interactions between fishermen and traders play a crucial role in utilizing marine resources, building solidarity, and enhancing operational efficiency. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, gathering primary data through interviews, observations, and documentation, alongside secondary data from official sources. The findings reveal various forms of cooperation among fishermen, including the determination of fishing locations and the hauling of nets. These social interactions are categorized into four types: individual-to-individual (I-I), individual-to-group (I-G), group-to-individual (G-I), and group-to-group (G-G). Each interaction type demonstrates unique social dynamics that reinforce solidarity and work efficiency. This study recommends enhancing cooperation among fishermen and providing support to strengthen existing social networks, aimed at optimizing fishery yields and improving the welfare of the local community.

Abstract

Sea cucumbers are a delicious food that is favored by the Chinese community and holds high economic value in the market. They are also traded in dried or preserved forms. According to the Fisheries and Marine Database study, various economically valuable species of sea cucumbers have been identified in the West Southeast Maluku Regency, such as Holothuria scrabra, Holothuria fuscogilva, Holothuria edulis, Telenota ananas, Telenota anax, and Tripeneustes gratilla. This research aims to examine the marketing channels and the factors influencing the production of sea cucumber commodities. The results of the study indicate that: 1) the marketing channel for sea cucumber commodities in Tanimbar Selatan District operates as a one-level marketing system. The marketing functions performed by various marketing entities are as follows: producers carry out six marketing functions, local collectors perform all eight marketing functions, and processing enterprises undertake seven marketing functions. The marketing map illustrates that the distribution of sea cucumber commodities occurs in Tanimbar Selatan, involving producers and local collectors, and extends to inter-provincial regions involving local traders and processing enterprises. 2) the total marketing cost for sea cucumber commodities is IDR 22.860,546 for a single marketing period. The marketing entity incurring the highest cost is local collectors (73.51%), followed by consumers (25.83%), and producers (0.65%). Moreover, the marketing margin for sea cucumbers is IDR 32.164/kg. From this margin and the costs incurred, the average profit at the producer level is IDR 214.397/kg, while the average profit at the local collector level is IDR 29.241/kg. 3) simultaneously, the factors of the fishing season, education, price, and transportation costs significantly impact the production volume of sea cucumbers. However, when analyzed separately, only the fishing season factor significantly affects the production volume, while the other three factors do not have a substantial impact.

Abstract

Seaweed productivity is an important factor in the success of cultivation, both in traditional and modern systems. This article reviews various seaweed cultivation methods applied in different regions, with a focus on comparing productivity between traditional and modern systems. This study examines the productivity of seaweed within the context of traditional and modern cultivation systems, aiming to provide a better understanding of the efficiency and sustainability of both approaches. Through an in-depth literature review, this research compares traditional methods, such as manual planting in shallow waters, with modern techniques like the use of floating rafts and automated systems. Results indicate that while traditional methods hold significant cultural and economic value, modern systems tend to offer higher productivity and lower environmental impact. However, challenges in adopting new technologies within coastal communities must be addressed to ensure a successful transition. These findings are expected to provide valuable insights for stakeholders in enhancing sustainable seaweed cultivation practices.

Abstract

The study on the livelihood vulnerability of bamboo fish farmers in the Widuri River, Kasihan, Bantul, is essential for understanding the factors influencing their resilience to environmental risks. This research employs a quantitative method with a census approach, involving ten respondents who are bamboo fish farmers in the area. The collected data includes demographic profiles, education levels, farming experience, and aspects related to vulnerability, such as environmental pressure, adaptive capacity, and sensitivity. The analysis results show that the majority of respondents have a high school education, and most have less than one year of farming experience, indicating a significant interest among newcomers in fish farming activities. The farmers are vulnerable, with a Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI) score of 0.59. The pressures faced, such as floods and pollution, significantly impact their enterprises. An adaptive capacity score of 0.70 indicates a need for skill enhancement and income diversification. Additionally, their high dependence on fish farming as the primary source of income increases their vulnerability. Based on these findings, it is recommended that interventions be made through training in farming techniques, product diversification, and strengthening social networks to improve the adaptive capacity and resilience of farmers in facing existing environmental challenges. This research contributes significantly to developing risk mitigation strategies and the sustainability of fish farming enterprises in the region.
