Abstract

The dominance of formula memorization often constrains students’ spatial understanding. This article investigates how Meyvira, an eleventh-grade student, navigates a cognitive transition from procedural computation to qualitative geometric reasoning when confronted with a PISA-based problem. Employing a Think Aloud approach within a single-case study design, this research reveals a critical moment in which cognitive conflict stimulates the emergence of intuitive visualization as a valid proof strategy. The findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of mathematical sense-making and offer significant implications for educators in designing instruction that balances formal logic with visual intuition to foster deeper mathematical understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the contribution of formative assessment to the processes and outcomes of mathematics learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Ten scholarly articles published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed based on rigorous inclusion criteria and selected from the ScienceDirect, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases. The findings indicate that formative assessment plays a significant role in enhancing student engagement, strengthening conceptual understanding, and supporting responsive teaching practices. Furthermore, formative assessment helps students reflect on their learning progress and promotes self-regulated learning in mathematics. Various forms of formative assessment have been identified, including technology-based interactive media, peer assessment, self-assessment, and visual and reflective feedback that encourage active student participation. However, the implementation of formative assessment faces several challenges, such as limited instructional time, digital literacy issues, teacher readiness, and technical difficulties in online learning environments. This review highlights the importance of continuous professional development for teachers and the establishment of a supportive assessment culture to ensure the effective implementation of formative assessment in mathematics education. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning through evidence-based assessment practices.

Abstract

Rice production is one of the main indicators of national food security, especially in Indonesia.Accurate rice production forecasts are essential to support strategic planning and decision-makingin the agricultural sector. This study aims to apply fuzzy logic using the Mamdani method toforecast rice production in 2024. This method was chosen for its ability to handle the uncertaintyand complexity of data that often occurs in agricultural systems. The variables used includeharvest area, productivity, rainfall, and average temperature. The data analyzed is historical datafrom several previous years, which is then processed using a fuzzy inference system. The predictionprocess was carried out in several stages, namely fuzzification, rule formation, inference, anddefuzzification. The results of the study indicate that the Mamdani fuzzy logic model predicts riceproduction in 2024 to be 27,100,000 tons; it is hoped that this model will provide predictions thatclosely align with historical data and trends, with a relatively small margin of error. Thus, thismethod can be a reliable and adaptive tool in supporting future rice production planning and policy.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low spatial literacy among elementary school students, who tend to memorize physical features of shapes without understanding their hierarchical logical relationships. The primary objective is to deconstruct the cognitive dynamics in building geometric conceptual understanding through the integration of abstraction and classification processes. Adopting a descriptive qualitative case study design, the study included 5th-grade students selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Conceptual Geometry Task instrument through the Think-Aloud Protocol (TAP) technique, observations, and task-based interviews, which were then qualitatively analyzed using data triangulation. Specific findings indicate that the subjects reached a mature stage of abstraction by extracting invariant attributes to perform hierarchical classification consistent with Van Hiele Level 1. Furthermore, a progressive self-correction mechanism was identified as a means of overcoming high cognitive load by modifying logical strategies. Contextually, this study indicates that students’ procedural errors are often integral to the process of developing conceptual abstraction. The practical implications emphasize the urgency for educators to validate students' learning trajectories to foster comprehensive mathematical reasoning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the mathematical reasoning abilities of eighth-grade students at SMPN 22 Mataram in the 2025/2026 academic year based on their initial mathematical ability levels. This is a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used in this study include administering a written test of initial ability, a written test of mathematical reasoning ability, and in-depth interviews regarding students’ mathematical reasoning ability. The data analysis methods employed are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The indicators of mathematical reasoning ability consist of four stages, namely: a) identifying information, b) mathematical manipulation, c) constructing evidence, providing reasons or evidence for the validity of a solution, and d) concluding statements. The research results indicate that: a) students with high initial ability were able to solve the mathematical reasoning ability test questions well and met all 4 indicators of mathematical reasoning ability, b) students with moderate initial ability were less able to solve the mathematical reasoning ability test questions well, and errors and mistakes were found across the 4 stages of the mathematical reasoning ability indicators, c) students with low initial mathematical ability were able to solve the mathematical reasoning ability test questions up to the stage of formulating evidence, providing reasons or evidence for the correctness of the solution, but there were many errors and mistakes.

Abstract

This study is motivated by students' low ability to receive and process problem information, making error analysis necessary to understand conceptual understanding and help teachers determine appropriate learning strategies. The study aims to describe students' conceptual understanding in algebraic multiplication material, analyze the relationship between student errors based on Newman's procedure, and develop learning recommendations. The research employed a descriptive approach combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, with 30 seventh-grade students at a junior high school in Yogyakarta as subjects. Data were collected through conceptual understanding tests, analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics in the form of scores and categories, and qualitatively to identify student errors using five Newman stages: Reading Error, Comprehension, Transformation, Process Skill, and Encoding. Results indicate that students' conceptual understanding falls in the fairly good category with an average score of 79.72, with the highest indicator on connect knowledge and the lowest on evaluate thinking and purpose ideas and conjecture. Errors in reading and understanding problems indicate weak conceptual understanding, whereas the ability to construct procedures and write correct answers reflects strong conceptual understanding. Learning recommendations emphasize strengthening basic concepts, complete solution procedures, and developing students' evaluation skills and mathematical idea expression.
