Abstract

The conflict between the rights of women and unborn take an ugly turn when one speaks of confinement of women for protection of their foetuses. The very thought seems perverse because we delve into the negative aspect of the rights discourse - rights are in modern times used as weapon to correct moral depravity. The relationship between the mother and her foetus, particularly the aspect of maternal care towards the unborn is more a matter of course than rights’. Thus, in case of pregnant women-foetal relationship, what essentially was a part of maternal responsibility and innate to motherhood gets reduced to rights and becomes a matter of legal duty rather than a moral responsibility. From the moral-philosophical perspective, it may be viewed as a debasement of the relationship from both sides - the mother refuses to alter her lifestyle of addiction for the sake of the unborn upon which the latter is up in arms against the former with the charge of abuse. This work maintains that the rights discourse is ill equipped to understand the problem, as law cannot be perceived as the panacea of all ills.

Abstract

The research is aimed to determine the factors of interest in learning, and learning disciplines that affect student learning outcomes accounting expertise. This type of research is qualitative research using qualitative descriptive analysis tools and multiple regression analysis to determine how much these factors influence. The sample is 76 students using proportional random sampling technique. This study means that the interest variable (X1) has a positive effect on learning outcomes (Y). This indicates that if the interest variable increases one unit, while the student learning discipline variable is considered constant it will cause an increase in learning outcomes by 0.480. This indicates that when the learning discipline variable has increased by one unit and the interest variable is considered constant it will cause an increase in learning outcomes. learning outcomes of 0.477. The results of the correlation coefficient analysis obtained a value (r) of 0.640, which means that the relationship between student learning outcomes and student learning interest and student learning discipline is in the strong category. Where the correlation value is in the coefficient interval 0.60 - 0.799. While the coefficient of determination (r2) is 0.410 or 41 percent, which means that the effect of student interest in learning and learning discipline on student learning outcomes is 41 percent, while the remaining 59 percent (100% - r2) is determined by other factors not included in this study. The results of the t-test show that the significant value is smaller than the alpha value, where the significant value = 0.002 <alpha = 0.05, which means that it is significant, so the hypothesis proposed is that: "It is assumed that interest in learning and student learning discipline has a significant effect on learning outcomes. students in the Accounting Skills Program of SMK Negeri 1 Pangkep are declared "accepted".

Abstract

The Nigerian commonwealth has been bastardized by our national political and economic managers.  This has given rise to the current cry in search of unity, peace and patriotism of Nigerians.  It can be said again that things have fallen apart and the centre seems not to hold any longer.  The current wave of corruption, bloodshed, ethnic militia and communal and political subdivisions and carpet crossing at our political arena are clear signs of the deteriorating state of our Nigerian commonwealth.  Good Nigerians desire to see Nigeria return back to her former glory of oneness, prosperity and pride.  That is why this research explored the ethos of Confucius for the rebuilding of the Nigerian commonwealth.  This work which is anchored on the sociological theory of “Structural Functionalism” propounded by Emile Durkheim (1850-1917) and adopted the qualitative or exploratory research method in gathering information.  It employed the content analysis approach in examining available printed materials on the subject matter.  The findings from the research showed that Nigerians have deviated from the ethical values that had initially been the source of strength and toe the path of selfishness, ethnicity and division.  This new path became a path to corruption and disintegration. The research recommends an inclusiveness of human responsibility for improving life; adoption of an ideal political system founded on “ideals of personal conduct” rather than on formerly enacted laws; and adoption of a viable religious ethos that will revitalize the ailing economic, social and political status of the Nigerian commonwealth.

Abstract

Issues in euthanasia have become one of the debatable topics in the present situation, one of the reasons being the fear of lingering between life and death in an unbearable and painful condition. With the advent of science and technology in the field of medicine, the physician can always dictate terms in curing the diseases, which were once considered to be fatal. This implication has eroded the line between life and death where people are of the firm conviction that with the help of a physician we can always dictate death to wait for some more time. This advance in technology has bridged the dividing line between life and death where the transition from life to death can be sustained by artificial machines. One important consequence of this advancement in science and technology resulting in sustaining death, posed a serious question among the physicians, lawyers, ethicists and society in settling the line that separates life and death. For instance, the physicians desire to frame some definitions of death so that they can protect themselves legally and allow them to perform certain medical procedures like organ transplantation, so that they can ease their conscience in dealing with death. The ethical debate on Euthanasia thus creates interest in the researcher to study about the topic in detail. The research work is be based on the data collected from libraries, journals, magazines, newspaper, law report, seminars, and conferences. The researcher has also reviewed few articles in which it has been observed that the authors have analyzed the differences of arguments in and against euthanasia to portray its progressiveness.

Abstract

The present paper is a representation of a systematic inquiry as well as an application of the main thrust in Thomas Kuhn’s discourse concerning the growth of human knowledge represented in philosophy of science. The paper begins by stating the points of tradition and normal science in Thomas Kuhn’s analysis of the growth of scientific knowledge. This is juxtaposed with the notions of discontinuity and revolution. A fundamental point in the paper is that Thomas Kuhn presents an analysis that bring to the fore a tradition of continuous discontinuity. This he expounded in the philosophy of paradigm shifts brought about by crisis and revolution, resulting in the overthrow of an existing hegemony and the birth of a new one. In all, Thomas Kuhn believes that science does not represent a paradigm of rationality because going through the history of science; we are not able to discover a particular paradigm or rationality that runs through the entirety of the history of science. If anything at all, science is made up of different paradigms of rationality, models of knowledge systems of method such that, the change from one scientific epoch to another cannot be a lineal rational or methodic one. Rather, it is a shift from one model to an opposing one; what he calls a gestalt switch which is a change in ‘form of life’, ‘language game’ or ‘conceptual scheme’. The paper however, presents the thesis that even if there is no outstanding form of rationality the history of science is seen to contain a certain continuous tradition. This has to do with the aim of any science. And so, be it the science of Ptolemy, Copernicus or Galileo, Einstein or Newton, there is the aim of human interest transcending all the epochs. To this extent, the paper argues a rationality of any scientific epoch or paradigm must derive from the quality of human interest it potent. Any science be it religion, mysticism or positivism that does not aim at human flourishing is not rational. The paper employs the method of text-analysis, conceptual clarification, constructive criticism and reconstructivism to bring forth its central argument.
