Abstract

The results of the KPAI survey from 2011 to 2016 included 12,202 cases of Indonesian children and adolescents involved in risk behaviour. Jabodetabek is the area with the most cases of children and adolescents involved in risk behaviour, namely 5,160 cases. Adolescent self-regulation becomes a protective factor against risk behaviour. Parenting and parents' emotional regulation abilities become the main protective factors towards adolescent risk behaviours and adolescent self-regulation abilities. Based on that explanation, this study aims to examine the mediating role of parenting towards the contribution of parents' emotional regulation strategies to adolescent self-regulation. Data analysis of this study used multiple regression with the Hayes template model, namely model four with using one mediator variable. The sample of this study consisted of 157 pairs of study participants namely fathers, mothers, and adolescents obtained from 73 Tebet Middle School, 3 Bogor High School, and Depok 8 Middle School by using accidental sampling method. There are three measuring instruments in this study, namely The Adolescent Self-Regulatory Inventory (ASRI) to measure teenage participant self-regulation, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) to measure parents' emotional regulation, and Parenting Style Four Factor Questionnaire (PSFFQ) to measure parenting. Based on the results of multiple regression analysis on adolescent participants showed that there is a mediating role of paternal authoritative parenting on contribution of the paternal emotion regulation (reappraisal and suppression) to adolescent self-regulation abilities, then there is a mediating role of maternal authoritarian parenting on contributing of maternal emotion regulation (reappraisal) to adolescent self-regulation abilities.

Abstract

Lots of researchers found that perceived control had a major role in various educational activities, including thesis. Unfortunately, there was limited study that validates perceived control inventory to measure the construct, especially in the thesis writing context. The thesis writing context has specific characteristics that make this context unique compare to the general academic context. In order to provide psychometric properties, especially validity evidence in this inventory, the present study aimed to validate the inventory. The research participants (N = 233) were university students from one university and across faculties. Construct validity evidence was used in the present study using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to validate the construct. Reliability was also estimated in the study. The result showed that the inventory fulfilled the fit criteria, namely Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Goodness-of-Fit Index (GFI), Normed Fit Index (NFI), and Non-Normed Fit Index (NNFI). The factor loading of each item > .70, the Construct Reliability (CR) of each dimension > .70, and the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) of each dimension > .50. The reliability of the whole construct and its factors also satisfactory (>.70). This result indicated that this inventory was satisfactory in the overall aspect and could be used to measure perceived control in the thesis writing context.

Abstract

In the career selection process of high school students, previous research has shown that career decision self-efficacy can be predicted from thinking styles. However, the self-efficacy of career decisions can differ between men and women. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look at the role of gender as a moderator in the relationship of thinking styles with the self-efficacy of career decisions of high school students. The number of respondents in this study were 353 high school students. Furthermore, the variables were measured using a research questionnaire namely the Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form (CDSE-SF) scale and Thinking Style Inventory-Revised II (TSI-R2) which had been adapted into Indonesian. Data were analyzed using PROCESS macros program from Hayes that contained in SPSS. The results show that gender can only moderate the relationship of type I thinking styles with career decision self-efficacy in senior high school students (b3 = -0,24, t=-2,51, p<0,05); while gender doesn’t become a moderator in the relationship of type II thinking styles with career decision self-efficacy of high school student (b3 = -0,12, t=-1,28, p>0,5). Limitation and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of coping stress and college adjustment on academic achievement, of the first-year Unpad students. The approach that used to test the research hypothesis is a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis techniques. The subjects in this study were 363 Unpad students that still in their first-year research sampling technique uses probability sampling technique with cluster sampling method so that researchers get a sample that can represent the population of Unpad students. Data was obtained through Cope Inventory (Carver, Scheier, and Weintraub, 1989) that have been adapted by Sentani (2016) to measure coping stress, SACQ (Baker & Siryk, 1986) which has been adapted by Hadiana (2016) to measure college adjustment and the GPA score to describe the academic achievement of Unpad students. In this study it was found that coping stress and college adjustment together were proven to have a significant effect on the academic achievement of Unpad first-degree students. The contribution of predictor (R2) coping stress and college adjustment was 5.9%. That is, the effect exerted is small. The dimensions that are proven to have positive effect on student academic achievement are problem focused coping of 6.6%, and academic adjustment of 0,4%. Meanwhile, one dimension is proven to have negative effect on student academic achievement is emotion focused coping of 9,1%.

Abstract

Adolescents undergo an important process that is deciding which career path will impact their future later. For vocational high school students, career decision making is not an easy task because there are many career choices, which is go to college, enter the workforce, or being entrepreneur. They have to be confident with themselves that they are able to make the right career decisions. This study aimed to examine the role of perceived parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy through mediation of trait emotional intelligence in vocational high school students. The respondents of the study were 702 students in 12th grade. The adapted Career Decision Self Efficacy – Short Form, Parental Authority Questionnaire, and Trait Emotional Questionnaire were used in this study. The data were analysed using Hayes’ PROCESS simple mediation model. Mediation analyses showed that trait emotional intelligence partially and positively mediated the effect of paternal and maternal authoritative parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy; trait emotional intelligence partially and negatively mediated the effect of paternal and maternal authoritarian parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy. The implication for further research is given on the end of study.

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the role of emotional socialization in developing preschoolers' emotional regulation moderated by maternal warmth. Participants in this study consisted of 139 mothers who had children aged 3 to 5 years in Indonesia. This study uses a non-probability sampling approach with a moderation analysis technique using Hayes’ PROCESS Macro for SPSS. The instruments used for data collection were The Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC) to measure mother's perceptions of children's emotions, Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale (CCNES) to measure mother's reactions to children's negative emotions, and Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire-Short Form (PARQ) to measure the level of mother's warmth. The results showed that there is an interaction between emotional socialization and maternal warmth (β= 0.006, t = 2.704, p < 0.05), which plays a role in helping the development of emotional regulation in preschool age. Emotional socialization has a significant effect on the development of emotional regulation in preschool at low maternal warmth levels. That result predicts the low development of emotional regulation of preschool children if the mother has a low level of warmth as well. Although there is a significant interaction between mother's warmth and the socialization of emotions on the development of emotional regulation of preschool children, the role that occurs is not large.  This is due to the fact that the two independent variables have several similar characteristics that are likely to influence the interaction value of the two variables.

Abstract

Social comparison is a fundamental cognitive process in an effort to evaluate themselves. Nowadays, social comparison are getting easier to happen especially the frequent use of Instagram. Instagram were known as the most popular social networking sites in Indonesia with more than 60 million active users most of whom are adolescents. However, the active use of Instagram allows people to compare themselves with others (social comparison) which further reduce the quality of life of adolescents. Therefore, this study aims to better understand the relationship between social comparison and quality of life on adolescent while exploring whether the Instagram usage intensity acts a moderator of this relationhsips. Participants in this study are adolescents age 14 to 19 years , live in Jabodetabek and use the Instagram. This study uses several questionnaire includes 25-point WHOQoL-BREF, 10-point intensity social network sites use, and 9-point social media social comparison. The collected data was analysed using Hayes’ PROCESS for SPSS to determine whether Instagram usage intensity was a significant moderator. The results showed that the high intensity use of the social networking site of Instagram moderated the role of social comparison and quality of life with p = 0.00 < 0.05. These results indicate that in the group of adolescents who use Instagram with high intensity, the social comparison predicts a significant decrease in quality of life.

Abstract

Expressive language disorder is difficulty using words to communicate desires and ideas. This study aims to intervene to improve communication skills in children with expressive language disorders using behavior modification. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach to see changes in behavior that occur to the subject. The research subject was male, 4 years 8 months old. Researchers use several techniques in behavior modification such as token economy, imitation, and modeling. The intervention was carried out in 7 sessions, each session taking 30 minutes to 1 hour. The intervention was carried out for seven weeks. The results of the intervention indicated an improvement in the subject's language and communication. The subject is quite capable of pronouncing several vocabulary words clearly and precisely. There are new vocabulary additions that are not familiar with the subject. The subject mentions the words without eliminating the prefix or ending of the word and the subject has been able to compose 2 to 3 simple words in 1 sentence. Based on the intervention that has been given to the subject, it can be concluded that the provision of behavior modification therapy by combining token economy, imitation and modeling techniques is quite effective in improving the subject's communication skills. The subject shows a change in the ability to communicate.

Abstract

In the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, it has an impact on the field of education which results in changes in the learning system which carried out using a distance learning system. The distance learning system performed by students and teachers has negative impacts and positive impacts. One of the positive impacts is students can learn to feel grateful for the conditions they experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. When students have gratitude, students can enjoy experiences and difficult situations during the COVID-19 pandemic which makes them have to do distance learning as a positive thing and it will lead to life satisfaction in students. Therefore, this study aims to determine the role of gratitude on life satisfaction in middle adolescents in senior high school during distance learning. This study was conducted on 1298 senior high school students aged 15-18 years old who are doing distance learning in Indonesia. The research method used is a non-experimental quantitative research method. The gratitude measure instrument used is The Gratitude Questionnaire-Six Item Form (GQ-6) and the student’s life satisfaction measure instrument used is the Multidimensional Student’s Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS). Based on the Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis through the structural model of gratitude on student’s life satisfaction, the results obtained in this study with t-value = 14.56 > 1.96 or R2 value is 51%. Thus, gratitude has a positive and significant role of 51% on life satisfaction in middle adolescents in senior high school during distance learning.

Abstract

 Attachment security is defined as a condition where an individual has a sense of security and is not disturbed by the availability of someone who is considered as an attachment figure (Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, & Wall in Solomon & George, 2008). Ainsworth classifies the types of attachments into secure attachment and insecure attachment, where insecure attachment is further divided into ambivalent attachment and avoidant attachment (Solomon & George, 2008). This study analyzes data using two main dimensions, namely secure and insecure. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of children’s attachment in today’s digital era seen from the perception of the children. The research data was collected in March 2020 using purposive sampling, which involved 72 participants who filled out the research questionnaire directly with paper-and-pencil tests. Criteria for participants in this study are children in the age range of 9-11 years who, at the time of the study, were elementary school level students. Based on the results of data collection, a percentage of 100% of the total of subjects were gadget users. Based on research data using descriptive techniques, it was found that there were more subjects in the study who showed a tendency to have secure attachment compared to insecure attachment.
