Abstract

Semantic word is actually a technical term that refers to the study of meaning. Semantics in Indonesian derived from the Greek 'sema' (noun) which means 'sign' or 'symbol'. The verb is 'semaino' which means 'mark' or 'symbolize'. The present study aims to examine the factors that can affect the shift of meaning in Indonesian based on current linguistic context. This study used qualitative research where the intent is to provide a detailed, in-depth description of everyday life. Data was taken from Indonesian language that may address particular themes that may facilitate the use of specific linguistic features. It tends to capture the reality of social life taking place in Indonesia. The result of this study shows that the type of meaning can be distinguished based on some criteria and points of view. The findings indicate that the type of meaning can be distinguished based on semantic types, namely between lexical meaning and grammatical meaning; based on the presence or absence of referents in a word, to distinguish the referential meanings and non-referential; based on the presence or absence of a sense of value in a word, to distinguish the connotative meaning and denotative; based on accuracy of its meaning, to distinguish the meaning of the term or the common meaning and special significance; kind of meaning can also be classified into two types, namely lexical meaning and contextual meaning

Abstract

Discourse used in linguistics refers to any passage, spoken or written. As the news about “Mirna dan Jessica case” on Jakarta Post. Jakarta Post in one of the News Paper that published in Print out and on-line. In this research the researcher take the data from online news at July 2016. A text in the news include on a passage of discourse which is coherent in these two regards: it is coherent with respect to the context of situation and therefore consistent in register; and it is coherent with respect to itself, and therefore cohesion. This research analyzes the cohesion on the Mirna and Jessica case in Jakarta Post used descriptive design with qualitative method through Discourse approach. The result of the research on grammatical cohesion used in Jakarta post in the first news, are: promonimal reference “her, their, his, and they”, the demonstrative reference “the and that”, Comparative Reference “as”, Cataphoric Reference “another”, Additive Conjunction “and”. For the second news are: Pronominal Reference “Her, she, you, they, their”, Demonstrative Reference “the”, Additive Conjunction “both, and”, Adversative Conjunction “but”

Abstract

YouTube is one of the online media used by the people to transfer idea or information. The researcher investigated the use of YouTube which consisted of Madura local Arts in teaching speaking. The philosophy of Madura Traditional dancing were used as the materials in speaking class. The philosophy consists of two aspects, those are: the history of the dancing and the moment held the performances. These things are new for the second semester. There was one class in second semester. The researcher used true-experimental and applied simple random sampling for 66 students into two groups. The way of researcher applied that sampling technique is through students’ attendance list number (even and odd number). The odd number was formed to be a new group. The researcher decided the odd number group as control group and the rest (even number) was an experimental group by throwing the coin. They could listen and watch the videos through YouTube. And the following step was noting the speaking log as the instrument to note what have they watched, made summary and retell. After getting treatment for 3 weeks, the posttest has been analyzed by using SPSS showed that was Ho has been rejected and H1 was accepted. In other words, there was positive effect from using YouTube which consisted of Madura Local Art toward the students’ speaking skill. After conducting pre and posttest, it shown that Madura Local art-Based YouTube was effective to build the students’ speaking skill and it is recommend for further researchers to attempt other Traditional Local Art-Based YouTube

Abstract

Writing is one of productive skill which frequently represents students’ ability in expressing their thought toward something. Peer-feedback is considered to be important point in students’ writing process. This article aims to investigate the effect of peer feedback on students’ writing achievement at STKIP PGRI Jombang. Quasi-experimental is used as research design with test as the main instrument and questionnaire as the secondary instrument. The result of ANCOVA showed that there is a significant effect of peer feedback on students’ writing achievement. Moreover, the result of students’ response toward the used of peer feedback indicates positive result

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study focuses on the description of the English consonants systems spoken by speakers of Sundanese backgrounds. This implies that such speakers of particular regional backgrounds speak unique and ideosyncratic native languages. This study will provide a description on the consonants production of English as Foreign Language (EFL) speakers with Sundanese native language in an experimental phonetic method to the students of Islamic Education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. In this study, the writer have two objectives: (1) to know the English consonants systems of EFL Sundanese speakers in Islamic Education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga? and (2) to know the most frequent errors on pronouncing English consonants produced by EFL Sundanese speakers. From the result of the analysis, it can be seen that the EFL Sundanese students made 262 errors. It can also been seen that the greatest errors made by the EFL Sundanese students are mispronouncing the minimal pairs of /f/ and /v/, /s/ and /Ө/ and /ð/ and /z/. The misuse of the sound “p” instead of “b” is common error for Sundanese since there is not distinction between the sound “f”, “v” dan “p” in sundanese phonological system

Abstract

Teacher professional development in Indonesia has widely expanded in globalization, especially with the existence of technology in instruction. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) resemble one of the means to promote teachers in developing their pedagogic skill in teaching. CALL from sociocultural perspective relates the issue of culture, literacy, and identity. The present study discusses how teaching practices of teachers reflect CALL approach in the eyes of sociocultural perspective, i.e. social interaction, internalization, mediation, and psychological systems. 25 English teachers from 15 schools responded intensively in answering the online questionnaire with closed-ended and open-ended questions as well as an unstructured interview about their process of classroom instruction. Focusing on the three aspects, this article seeks to find out the relations of how CALL becomes such a way to promote secondary school teachers in Indonesia to be globalized by using technology in language instruction. Three main aspects of Vygotskian thought is used to analyze how technology-enhanced learning can impact to the EFL instruction: mediation, social learning, and genetic analysis. It turns out that Indonesian EFL secondary schools teachers make use of CALL in such a various but not advanced way due to limited knowledge and skill to the updated current technology making seminars and workshops in advanced CALL are necessary to attend

Abstract

Reading is crucial learning activity which mostly makes students bored. To build interactive activity, Quick on the Draw (QOTD) is useful technique that group working is the prior aspect should be done by the students. So that, the researcher interested to investigate whether the students taught by using QOTD have better achievement in reading recount text than the students taught by conventional technique in SMP Negeri 2 Megaluh. This research used quasi experimental design especially nonequivalent control group design which experimental and control group are included. By giving the same pre-test and post-test and different teaching learning process, the research data was collected. The data was analyzed by using ANCOVA SPSS 16.0. By calculating the post-test for both control and experimental group, it was gained F value 6.009. It was meant 6.009 >4.03, the F value is greater than F critical value. And the significance value was 0.018 which is lower than the significance level, 0.018 < 0.05. It could be concluded that Quick on the Draw is effective in teaching reading recount text at the eight students of SMP Negeri 2 Megaluh and the Hypothesis Alternative (Ha) was accepted.

Abstract

This research used M- Learning (Story book: Moral stories) as media to teach reading comprehension. This research is aimed to know whether story book: moral stories media has significant effect on students’ reading comprehension at SMP N 1 Mojoagung. In applying the media, it was elaborated with make a match model in both classes. Using Quasi experimental non equivalent (pretest- posttest control group design), this research involved 50 students which were in class 8A (control class) and class 8B (experiment class) both involved 25 students each class. The instrument used multiple choice tests. The result of post test used Independent sample T-test by using SPSS 16.0. The result showed the mean of control class was 69.40 and experimental group mean showed 90.40. It concluded that the mean score of experimental class got higher than control class. The result of Independent sample T – test in sig. (2- tailed) value showed 0.000 which is less than α value = 0.05, it means that students who are taught by using story book: moral stories media has statistically significant different score than those who are taught by printed media in reading comprehension.

Abstract

Nowadays, traveling has been transformed drastically into a-must-do activity to ensure that they can keep update on what’s trending now. Today there are a whole bunch of advertisements which attract people to go traveling the world. And this phenomenon is strengthen with the abundance amount of online traveling applications like Traveloka, PegiPegi, Tiket.com, Agoda, Airy, AirBnb, and many more lists which make traveling become much more practice and pretty easier. Based on those facts, this research aims to explore more about how big the influence of the advertisements and online traveling applications will affect people to go traveling as well as to examine about about the ways traveling influences people’s perspective in seeing the world. This research used ethnomethodology as the research design since it discusses much about the traveling phenomenon in relation with people’s perspective and response in seeing the world outside. The data were gathered through online questionnaire in the Facebook group of ‘Backpacker Dunia’ which consist of twenty submitted questionnaires. Personal data analysis (through questionnaire and interviews) was performed to test whether the influence of advertisements and online traveling applications will affect people to go traveling and whether traveling influences people’s perspective in seeing the world or not. The data analysis were conducted by using qualitative descriptive method. The results revealed that in the end they realized that traveling is always the best way to learn about everything, including about the culture and the ways people seeing the world. In short, there will always be the symbol (relationship between words), the referent (something or the thing it describes), and the meaning (the thought which is related to the word and the thing).

Abstract

Many students get a low achievement in their learning. One of the suggested ways in overcoming the students’ problems is remedial teaching. Contrary to the procedure, remedial teaching was mostly done perfunctorily. This study was generally aimed to find out how teachers apply the remedial teaching in class. Specifically, this study was aimed to find out how teachers identifying students who need to be given remedial teaching, how teachers find the students difficulties in their learning process and how teachers devise strategies to overcome the students’ problems. In this study the researcher gathered data on the implementation of remedial teaching in senior high school. The focus of the study was the implementation of remedial teaching on English lesson on the students of SMAN 3 Bangkalan only. A qualitative research design was proposed to obtain answers to research questions of this study. The study that the researcher chose was case study. The subject of this research was English teachers of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 3 Bangkalan. To collect data the researcher did observation, interview and documents gathering. The research finding was the implementation of remedial teaching in SMAN 3 Bangkalan was quite good, but it was not too much well done. English teachers of SMAN 3 Bangkalan did the remedial teaching by analyzing the students’ score, analyzing the students’ disabilities and curing the students’ disabilities. But the enrichment program had not conducted yet. They did the all steps of the remedial teaching but there were several that they ignored. It was done unmaximally. And there was lack of teachers’ role. Nevertheless, the implementation of remedial teaching in SMAN 3 Bangkalan was not done too much perfunctorily. It could be said that it was had only a few methodological flaws
